I was immediately impressed by Moonspell’s latest album. My first thought was that Moonspell had once again made an album in the style of ‘Wolfheart’ and ‘Irreligious’, which meant returning to their roots. But it was only after having read the CD booklet that I could then position this album. It was not an album that returns to the roots, it IS the roots.
This album is a compilation of re-recordings before ‘Wolfheart’ was recorded. What you get here is the complete ‘Under the Moonspell’ and the demo tape recording of ‘Anno Satantanae’. The recorded promo ‘Serpent Angel’, under the band name of Morbid Gods, is also included.
Compositionally speaking, all of the songs are rated very high in terms of quality. You also notice how Moonspell has evolved. Their earlier music was more Dark Metal and Black Metal oriented whereas now, they’d fit into the Death Metal category. The vocals of Fernando are a lot ore varied here than on the previous albums, which makes this album come across as much stronger. He didn’t shy away from using clean vocals and this is what gives people a much better image of his amazing singing capacities. These solid songs create the right mood that fits with the genre. The re-release of this album will hopefully bring some adjustments for the future.
This album is an asset for every fan who does not yet any of their first albums. It contains excellent material and the quality of the re-recordings is great. I recommend this one!

Al vanaf de eerste noot was ik onder de indruk van dit ‘nieuwe’ album van Moonspell. Mijn eerste gedachte was dat Moonspell terug een album had gemaakt in de stijl van ‘Wolfheart’ en ‘Irreligious’, terug naar de roots dus. Pas na het lezen van de bijsluiter kon ik het album beter plaatsen. Het is geen album terug naar de roots maar het zijn de roots…
Dit album is een compilatie van heropgenomen pre ‘Wolfheart’ opnamen. Het complete ‘Under The Moonspell’ en de demo tape opname ‘Anno Santanae’ zijn dus hier terug te vinden. De onder de groepsnaam Morbid God’s opgenomen promo ‘Serpent Angel’ is hier ook aanwezig.
De nummers zijn allen compositorisch van zeer hoge kwaliteit. Ook merk je des te meer de evolutie van Moonspell op. Waar de muziek zich vroeger meer in de Dark Metal & Black Metal sfeer bevond zijn de songs tegenwoordig meer in de ‘Death Metal’ stijl te plaatsen. De vocalen van Fernando zijn veel meer gevarieerd dan van jongere albums waardoor het geheel veel sterker overkomt. Doordat de cleane zangpartijen destijds niet geschuwd werden, krijgt men een beter beeld van de capaciteiten van deze super zanger. IJzersterke songs die de opkomst van het genre verantwoorden. De creaties scheppen de juiste sfeer die bij het genre past. Hopelijk wordt door het heruitbrengen van dit album de toekomst terug wat bijgesteld.
Het albums is dus voor iedere fan, die de uitgaven van het eerste uur niet heeft, een ware aanwinst. Buiten het feit dat het om uitstekend materiaal handelt, is de kwaliteit van de opnames supergoed vanwege de heropname van de songs. Een aanrader!
