Congenial musicians from all over the world gather one day to join their inventive ideas. Old Silver Key is a perfect example of that. The name might be new, but this is the brainchild of the hyperactive Roman Sayenko of Drudkh. The latest album of Drudkh, ‘Handful Of Stars’ (2010) already showed any influences from atmospheric, progressive rock. Roman decided to explore and expand this tendency, but in a new project. Who else could he better contact than the dreamy artist Neige, from Alcest fame? In addition, the other musicians of Drudkh appeared to be interested in the project as well. Thus it took not so long before this debut ‘Tales Of Wanderings’ could be recorded.
The title, ‘Tales Of Wanderings’ tells a lot about the music. It is a proper description of the seven compositions. One can find influences of gothic, shoegaze, ambient, rock and in some of the guitar sounds (more precisely during accelerations) when we can spot any slightly black metal flavours, but this thought only pops up because we know Sayenko’s other musical activities. The intro has a kind of atmospheric Pink Floyd sound and is promising. But Old Silver Key really shows the other side of the musician from a different point of view. ‘November Nights Insomnia’ and later on ‘Burnt Letters’ come close to smooth gothic rock, drown in distant melancholy and therefore it will appeal to Katatonia fans. The velvet vocals of Neige suit this contemplative, dream-like atmosphere very well. It leads to enchanting moments, especially during songs like ‘Cold Spring’ and the captivating ‘About Which An Old House Dreams’. The instrumental ‘Nineteen Winters Far Away From Home’ is a bit heavier, while the ambient atmosphere in ‘Cold Spring’ reminds a little bit of Antimatter. The hazy voice of Neige might sound a bit too smooth or monotonous for some of you, but yet this is an album that will give you fine moments during the late hours to ban this hectic life out of your troubled mind.

Gelijkgestemde muzikanten over heel de wereld vinden elkaar vroeg of laat om hun inventieve ideeën te versmelten. Old Silver Key is daar een perfect voorbeeld van. De naam is nieuw, maar dit is het geesteskind van de hyperactieve Roman Sayenko van Drudkh. Het laatste album van Drudkh, ‘Handful Of Stars’ (2010), vertoonde al enige invloeden uit atmosferische, progressieve rock. Roman besloot deze tendens verder te zetten, maar dan wel in een nieuw project. Uit dit idee is Old Silver Key ontstaan. Wie kon hij beter contacteren dan de dromerige figuur Neige, welbekend van Alcest? Bovendien waren de andere leden van Drudkh ook wel te vinden voor dit muzikale uitstapje en zo kon het debuut ‘Tales Of Wanderings’ al vlug opgenomen worden.
De vlag dekt de lading want die titel, ‘Tales Of Wanderings’, verwijst precies naar hoe je de zeven composities kunt omschrijven. Er zijn invloeden uit gothic, shoegaze, ambient, rock en in sommige gitaarklanken (wanneer men even accelereert) is nog een vleugje black metal te spotten, maar die gedachte dringt zich enkel op omdat we Sayenko’s andere activiteiten kennen. De intro heeft een atmosferisch Pink Floyd allooi en belooft veel goeds. Maar Old Silver Key toont de muzikant echt vanuit een ander perspectief. ‘November Nights Insomnia’ en later ‘Burnt Letters’ is vlotte gothic rock, welke door zijn melancholie wel fans van Katatonia zal aanspreken. De omfloerste stem van Neige past in ieder geval erg goed bij de contemplatieve, dromerige sfeer, die vooral in songs als ‘Cold Spring’ en het beklijvende ‘About Which An Old House Dreams’ tot boeiende momenten leidt. Het instrumentale ‘Nineteen Winters Far Away From Home’ is wat steviger, terwijl de ambient sfeer in ‘Cold Spring’ soms wat aan Antimatter doet denken. Het dromerige stemgeluid van Neige kan op sommige luisteraars wat te egaal overkomen, maar toch is dit een album dat in de late uurtjes heerlijke momenten kan bieden om het hectische leven even uit je vertroebelde geest kan bannen.
