NACHTBLUT: Antik

We are aware of essential differences between the German speaking (music) market and the rest of Europe, but I think that Napalm Records have inked a deal with Nachtblut, mainly because the German market is already rather big. We cannot imagine that this would become a huge international success. The band was founded in 2005 by vocalist Askeroth, but today we see four men and one woman, looking like gothic blackies. That is in harmony with the music they produce on this sophomore album ‘Antik’. In January 2009, this album has been self-released – just like the debut ‘Das Erste Abendmal’ – but in 2011 the band was picked up by Napalm.
I cannot be very enthusiastic about this five-piece from Osnabrück. Initially it is quite okay with a piano intro and smooth gothic rock. The raspy, creepy vocals of Askeroth resolutely declaim the German lyrics full of criticism on social and religious themes. The stamping ‘Ijobs Botschaft’ leans on elastic riffs, while the message is once again proclaimed in that half-spoken way. ‘Die Blutgräfin’ really gives me a heavy heart, a weak track. Any bombast and drama isn’t strange to Nachtblut, that’s for sure, and I have to admit that there are quite some fine orchestral arrangements in the latter part of the album to break the chill, mechanical atmosphere. One might almost call ‘‘Die Mutter Die Ihr Kind Verlor’ romantic, but I am sure there is a black tinge in the lyrics. Anyway, it is one of the better songs. A nice example of good melodies in the orchestration is ‘Kreuziging’, but on the other hand there are many weak moments, ending up in boredom. There’s a pinch of Rammstein in it, a touch of Cradle Of Filth in weaker moments or just another semi-industrial gothic band from Germany with a lugubrious touch that will do better in its own region than elsewhere. The biggest obstacle is the marching executed monotonous music and the voice that soon irritates. Rammstein fans may think different, so let’s round off with a proper advice: have a decent listen before purchasing. Tips to listen to: ‘Die Mutter Die Ihr Kind Verlor’, ‘Keuziging’ and the last song ‘Kreuzritter’. There will be a limited edition with new artwork and four bonus tracks.

We zijn ons bewust van de wezenlijke verschillen tussen de Duitstalige (muziek)markt en de rest van Europa, maar Napalm Records zal Nachtblut toch wel voornamelijk getekend hebben omdat de Duitse markt op zich al groot is. We kunnen ons namelijk niet voorstellen dat dit een groot internationaal succes gaat worden. De band werd in 2005 opgericht door zanger Askeroth, maar bestaat vandaag uit vier mannen en een vrouw die ogen als gotische blackies. Dat is in harmonie met de muziek die ze op dit tweede album ‘Antik’ produceren. In januari 2009 was dit album – net als het debuut ‘Das Erste Abendmal’ – al in eigen beheer uitgebracht, maar in 2011 werden ze opgepikt door Napalm.
Toch kan ik weinig warmlopen voor dit vijftal uit Osnabrück. In eerste instantie begint het nog aannemelijk met een piano intro en gotische rock op een drafje. De rasperige creepy stem van Askeroth declameert kordaat de Duitstalige teksten vol kritiek over sociale en religieuze thema’s. Het stampende ‘Ijobs Botschaft’ steunt op veerkrachtige riffs, terwijl de boodschap weer verkondigd wordt op die halfgesproken manier. ‘Die Blutgräfin’ doet de moed echter in mijn schoenen zakken. Enige bombast en dramatiek is Nachtblut zeker niet vreemd en het dient gezegd dat er op het tweede deel van dit album aardige orkestrale arrangementen zijn om de kille, mechanische sfeer een beetje te breken. ‘Die Mutter Die Ihr Kind Verlor’ zou je bijna romantisch kunnen noemen, ware het niet dat er vast een zwart randje aan de tekst zit. Het is wel één van de beste nummers. Een mooi voorbeeld van sterke melodieën in de orkestratie is ‘Kreuziging’, maar daar staan zoveel zwakke momenten tegenover dat de verveling meermaals toeslaat. Er zit een vleugje Rammstein in, Cradle Of Filth in een zwak moment of gewoon de zoveelste semi-industriële gotische band uit Duitsland met een luguber randje die vast wel beter zal boeren in eigen streek dan elders. Grootste opstakel is de marcherend voorgedragen eentonige muziek en de stem die al vlug gaat irriteren. Rammstein fans kunnen er mogelijk anders over denken, dus besluiten we met de raad: eerst beluisteren, dan pas aanschaffen. Luistertips: ‘Die Mutter Die Ihr Kind Verlor’, ‘Keuziging’ en afsluiter ‘Kreuzritter’. Er komt een gelimiteerde editie met nieuw artwork en vier bonus tracks.
