VISIONS OF ATLANTIS: Maria Magdalena (EP)

Visions Of Atlantis introduced a new female singer Maxi Nil on the full length CD ‘Delta’ early this year. The success of that album was regaled with a European tour. Now that the female singer has learned the ropes, they release an EP with five new songs and a re-recording of ‘Last Shut Of Your Eyes’ (originally from 2004). The symphonic, highfaluting style of the Austrian six-piece has been emphasized more in some of the tracks. But they kick off with a cover of the pop song ‘Maria Magdalena’, in the eighties a direct hit for Sandra. It illustrates the style of the band: in despite of a slightly heavier approach than the original version, this is nothing but polished, fairy-like symphonic rock. Consequently ‘Melancholia’, ‘Change Of Tides’ and ‘Distant Shores’ are wealthy orchestrated track in which vocal parts are smoothly divided between Mario Plank and Maxi Nil. ‘Last Shut Of Your Eyes’ and ‘Beyond Horizon’ are sensitive ballads, the first one with classical piano, the latter one with an incidental guitar solo. Nice, but also very mellifluent.

Visions Of Atlantis liet ons op ‘Delta’ begin dit jaar kennismaken met nieuwe zangeres Maxi Nil. Het succes van dit album werd verzilverd met een Europese tournee. Nu de zangeres beter ingewerkt is brengt men een ep met vijf nieuwe songs en een herbewerking van ‘Last Shut Of Your Eyes’ (oorspronkelijk uit 2004) op de markt. De symfonische, bombastische stijl van het Oostenrijkse zestal wordt daar in sommige tracks nog wat sterker in de verf gezet. Maar men gaat van start met een cover van het poplied ‘Maria Magdalena’, in de jaren tachtig een hit voor Sandra. Dit is tekenend voor de stijl van de band: ondanks de iets hardere aanpak dan het origineel, is dit gepolijste, feeërieke symfonische rock. ‘Melancholia’, ‘Change Of Tides’ en ‘Distant Shores’ zijn dan ook weelderige georkestreerde tracks waarin zanger Mario Plank en Maxi Nil de zangpartijen netjes verdelen. ‘Last Shut Of Your Eyes’ en ‘Beyond Horizon’ zijn gevoelige ballads, het eerste met klassieke piano, het tweede met een incidentele gitaarsolo. Een beetje (te) braaf is het wel.
