A well-targeted shellshock, this ‘Embrace The Fall’. Do not expect any lovely melodies, ballads or time to repose. This is US thrash with proper hardcore vocals, maximum velocity. It pommels, rages and storms like a fury, especially vocalist Grant Belcher screams his lungs out all album long in the middle of this brutal bulldozer in which we hear blastbeat parts as well. It seems that new drummer Tony Bettenhausen and new guitarist Justin Jurgevich have a soft spot for black metal too.
Hurtlocker had to face lots of trouble and delay after the release of their debut ‘Fear In A Handful Of Dust’. But they have bundled all this frustration into this explosion ‘Embrace The Fall’, a “blow your speakers†experience. This is forty minutes long exercises for your neck-muscles and believe me, they will have a serious training with this record. I never heard the debut, but that should have been very Slayer-alike. Well, Slayer fans will like this second album as well, I am pretty sure of that. Vocals become a bit too similar in the end for me, though ‘Outside Are The Dogs’ appears to be an exception. It is sung in a different way with a spoken verse with bass and drums. It was a welcome variety. Furthermore ‘Embrace The Fall’ sounds like a machinegun and rages on in ultra blast. Hurtlocker hails from Chicago. The album was produced by Chris Djuricic, who also played the bass lines on this album. He has produced one of their demos years ago. Chris is known to me as one of the Novembers Doom guys and here we see that musicians from Chicago lend a helping hand to each other.

Een welgemikte granaatinslag, dit ‘Embrace The Fall’. Verwacht geen vriendelijke melodieën, geen ballades, noch tijd om te verpozen. Dit is US thrash met heel wat hardcore in de vocalen, dit alles in vierde versnelling. Het beukt, raast en tiert als een furie, vooral zanger Grant Belcher schreeuwt zich constant de longen uit het lijf temidden van de brutale pletwals waar ook geregeld blastbeats in voorkomen. Naar verluidt houden nieuwe drummer Tony Bettenhausen en nieuwe gitarist Justin Jurgevich ook erg van black metal.
Na het debuut ‘Fear In A Handful Of Dust’ kreeg Hurtlocker met heel wat pech en vertraging af te rekenen, maar ze hebben al die frustraties samengebald tot de explosie die met ‘Embrace The Fall’ uit je boxen knalt. Dit is een veertig minuten durende oefening voor de nekspieren en geloof me, die zijn terdege getraind na dit plaatje. Ik heb het debuut nooit gehoord, maar dat zou heel erg Slayeriaans zijn. Nou, Slayer fans gaan ook van deze opvolger genieten, daar ben ik zeker van. De zang wordt voor mij op de duur een beetje te eentonig, al vormt ‘Outside Are The Dogs’ wel een uitzondering. Anders gezongen met een gesproken strofe met bas en drums. Dat was een welkome afwisseling. Verder klinkt ‘Embrace The Fall’ als een mitrailleursvuur en raast vrolijk verder. Hurtlocker komt uit Chicago. Het album werd geproduceerd door Chris Djuricic, die bovendien ook nog de baspartijen heeft ingespeeld op dit album. Vroeger had hij ook al eens een demo van Hurtlocker geproduceerd. De muzikant/producer is mij vooral bekend van Novembers Doom en zo zien we alweer dat muzikanten uit Chicago elkaar steunen.
