MYSTIC PROPHECY: Ravenlord

Mystic Prophecy has always been one of the more interesting bands in the power metal scène, having the nearest approach to bands like Brainstorm, Iced Earth and Nevermore instead of being akin to their German happy metal brothers. In 2009 they proved that vocalist/producer R.D. Liapakis and guitarist Markus Pohl were able to survive the next drastic change in the line-up by releasing the stunning album ‘Fireangel’. Fortunately they equal that top notch quality on ‘Ravenlord’.
Two years have gone by since the release of ‘Fireangel’ and this time the German/Greek outfit fortunately managed to keep the same line-up (except for the drummer). Thus it was a good oiled unit that started to create ‘Ravenlord’, with vocalist/producer R.D. Liapakis and guitarist Markus Pohl as moving spirits. The success of ‘Fireangel’ could be confirmed with a longer tour with Stratovarius and after hearing ‘Ravenlord’ we are convinced that the band will gain many more fans with this seventh studio album. For years Mystic Prophecy stands for heavy power/thrash metal with the powerful, hearty voice of their front man. There’s a lot to enjoy this time again. The heavy riffs of the title track, that follow the sonorous, mystic guitar intro, instantly set the standards for an epic composition in which the slightly hoarse vocals and a fast and furious guitar solo blows your speakers. An amazing start! ‘Die Now’ is fast and aggressive, raucous thrash metal where Liapakis screams like hell.
These two songs are representative for the important tendencies on this album: whether they cut loose in shorter, really harsh songs like ‘Damned Tonight’ and ‘Reckoning Day’, or they choose for a classic rock tenseness with a pinch of mystery; that’s illustrated best in songs like ‘Eyes Of The Devil’ or ‘Wings Of Destiny’ (think of Dio, think of Jorn). All this is regaled with magnificent guitar solos and fetching, catchy choruses. It says enough about the top notch quality of the songs when I tell you that the cover ‘Miracle Man’ of Ozzy Osbourne appears to be the weakest track. By the way, the bonus track on the digipak is worth a few euros more, since it is mega heavy! We hear some semi-grunts of Liapakis in it, a feature that is increased on the regular album. No cheesy power metal for Mystic Prophecy, but vigorous stuff verging more to US power metal than to the German happy metal bands. Hopefully we can see them soon on the road to support this excellent ‘Ravenlord’!

Mystic Prophecy heeft zich altijd positief gemanifesteerd in de power metal scène door eerder te neigen naar bands als Brainstorm, Iced Earth en Nevermore dan naar de happy metal uit Duitsland. In 2009 bewezen zij dat zanger/producer R.D. Liapakis en Markus Pohl ook een volgende drastische wijziging in de bezetting de baas konden, want ‘Fireangel’ was een megavet album. Gelukkig blijft kwaliteit hoogtij vieren, ook op ‘Ravenlord’.
Twee jaar zijn verstreken sinds ‘Fireangel’ uitkwam en ditmaal heeft de Duits/Griekse band gelukkig de bezetting stabiel kunnen houden (behalve de drummer). Het is dus een goedgeolied vijftal dat aan het werk ging om ‘Ravenlord’ te scheppen, met zanger/producer R.D. Liapakis en gitarist Markus Pohl als drijvende krachten. Het succes van ‘Fireangel’ kon bevestigd worden door een langere tour met Stratovarius en na het horen van ‘Ravenlord’ zijn we er van overtuigd dat de band met dit zevende studioalbum vast nog veel fans kan bijwinnen. Al jaren staat Mystic Prophecy garant voor zware power/thrash metal met de krachtige, hartelijke stem van hun frontman. Ook nu valt er veel te genieten. De zware riffs die volgen op de heldere, mystieke gitaarintro van het titelnummer zetten meteen de toon voor een epische compositie waarin de lichthese zang en een spetterende gitaarsolo uit de boxen spatten. Een sterk begin! ‘Die Now!’ is snel en agressief, ruwe thrash metal waarbij Liapakis zich schor brult.
Deze twee songs vertegenwoordigen meteen de belangrijkste strekkingen op dit album: of men gaat tekeer in kortere, knalharde songs als ‘Damned Tonight’ en ‘Reckoning Day’, of men kiest voor classic rock-geladenheid met een vleugje geheimzinnigheid, wat bijvoorbeeld in songs als ‘Eyes Of The Devil’ of ‘Wings Of Destiny’ (denk aan Dio, denk aan Jorn) best tot uiting komt. Dit alles wordt tevens overgoten met waanzinnige gitaarsolo’s en aanstekelijke refreinen. Het zegt veel over de hoge kwaliteit van de songs wanneer we vaststellen dat de cover van ‘Miracle Man’ van Ozzy Osbourne de minste track is. De bonustrack op het digipak is trouwens een kleine meeruitgave waard, want wat is ie heavy! Daar horen we Liapakis nog even grunten, iets wat op het reguliere album toch wel verminderd is. Geen cheesy power metal bij Mystic Prophecy, maar krachtdadig voer dat eerder lonkt naar US power metal dan naar Duitse happy metal bands. Hopelijk kunnen ze weer vlug de baan op om ruchtbaarheid te geven aan de kwaliteit op ‘Ravenlord’.
