Warmrain is the brainchild of the singer songwriter Leon J. Russell. He grew up with the progressive rock of the sixties and seventies and has a far-reaching soft spot for concept albums. For a long time, he worked alone, but now he has found three congenial souls to perform his musical dream. He works close together with Simon Bradshaw during the writing process, long before the other guys are involved in it. Everything is still tender and fresh: only in 2011 Warmrain played its first live gig, more precisely at the prestigious High Voltage festival. Now the first results of studio work are launched at the world: the EP ‘Absent Friends’.
It is a truly agreeable experience to listen to the emotive compositions of Russell, properly regaled with his warm, hearty voice. Acoustic guitars are the main instruments. The pivotal composition of this EP happens to be ‘Absent Friends’ and that’s quite rightly. There is also a radio edit of three minutes length on the EP, but we highly recommend the full version of eight minutes long, all the more because the magnificent, beautiful Pink Floyd alike guitar solo happens to be longer there.

It’s a phrase that will haunt you pretty soon. When conscious and unconsciousness merge into each other, then inspiration for ‘Flying Dreams’ popped up. Peaceful solitude prevails. The two shorter songs ‘Good To Belong’ and ‘Run To The Sun’ serves us a proper amount of contemplative melancholy as well, all this on a bed of semi acoustic guitars. Thoughtful easy listening rock that will appeal to fans of Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree and Alcest.

Warmrain is het geesteskind van de singer songwriter Leon J. Russell. Hij groeide op met de progressieve rock van de jaren zestig en zeventig en heeft een verregaande bewondering voor conceptalbums. Lang opereerde hij alleen, maar nu heeft hij drie vrienden gevonden om zijn muzikale droom te vertolken. Met Simon Bradshaw werkt hij nauw samen tijdens het componeren, lang voor de anderen er bij betrokken worden. Alles is nog pril: dit jaar gaf Warmrain zijn eerste concert, nota bene op het prestigieuze High Voltage festival. En nu komen worden de eerste vruchten van studiowerk uitgebracht: de ep ‘Absent Friends’.
Het is bijzonder aangenaam luisteren naar de gevoelige composities van Russell, degelijk vertolkt met zijn warm stemgeluid. Akoestische gitaren spelen daarbij een grote rol. De centrale compositie van deze ep is – terecht – ‘Absent Friends’. Er staat ook een radio edit van drie minuten op de ep, maar wij raden de volle versie van acht minuten aan, temeer daar de fantastische mooie Pink Floydiaanse gitaarsolo nog net wat langer is.

Het is een zin die je spoedig zal bijblijven. Wanneer bewustzijn en onderbewustzijn in elkaar overvloeien, kwam de inspiratie voor ‘Flying Dreams’. Vredige afzondering staat hier voorop. De twee kortere songs ‘Good To Belong’ en ‘Run To The Sun’ serveren ons eveneens een portie beschouwende weemoed op een bedje van semi-akoestische gitaren. Doordachte luistermuziek die fans van Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree en Alcest best kan aanspreken.
