EVERGREY: A Decade And A Half (2CD)

Fortunately things seems to get better again with Evergrey after the release of ’The Glorious Collision’, since even the reviews of their recent live gigs are unanimous positive. It was not always that way. The Swedish progressive metal band with vocalist Tom S. Englund and keyboardist Rikard Zander as main defining musicians now, has known turbulent times and even tragic moments since their inception in 1996. Nevertheless their albums were always top notch quality. It gives the progressive metal fan an extensive back-catalogue of eight studio albums and the amazing DVD ‘A Night To Remember’ with more than six hours material after their tenth anniversary in 2005.
Late November ‘A Decade And A Half’ came out, a double album with the best of Evergrey, selected by Englund himself. One can find songs of every album on it, except the debut ‘The Dark Discovery’, that’s ignored. Among the songs are three live tracks – ‘For Every Tear That Falls’, ‘Waking Up Blind’ and ‘Blackened Dawn’ – just as they were released on ‘A Night To Remember’.
Exclusive for this collection are the unplugged live versions of ‘Wrong’ (this recent single turned gold already in April 2011 with more than ten thousand copies sold in Sweden only) and ‘Frozen’ in which Tom’s emotional voice gives me goose-bumps. In the twenty-four pages booklet one can read liner notes, a nice gesture. Tom looks back in reveries on the past fifteen years. The booklet is filled with great photographs. It is a beautiful ‘best of’ album for those who have nothing of this magnificent band from Gothenburg yet in their collection as well as a fine summary for the fans. Up to their twentieth anniversary!

Gelukkig blijkt alles na het uitbrengen van ’The Glorious Collision’ weer goed te gaan met Evergrey, want ook de commentaren op de meest recente concerten van de band zijn unaniem positief. Het was ooit anders. De Zweedse progressieve metal band met zanger Tom S. Englund en toetsenist Rikard Zander als overblijvende richtinggevende muzikanten heeft al heel wat watertjes doorzwommen sinds de oprichting in 1996 en kende ook mindere tijden. Desalniettemin waren hun albums altijd van hoge kwaliteit. Dat biedt de progressieve metalfan ook een hele catalogus van acht studioalbums en de fantastische dvd ‘A Night To Remember’ met meer dan zes uur materiaal na het tienjarige bestaan in 2005.
Eind november kwam ‘A Decade And A Half’ uit, een dubbelalbum met het beste van Evergrey, gekozen door Englund zelve. Je vindt er songs op van alle studioalbums, behalve het debuut ‘The Dark Discovery’, dat wordt genegeerd. Onder het aanbod vinden we drie live uitvoeringen – van ‘For Every Tear That Falls’, ‘Waking Up Blind’ en ‘Blackened Dawn’ – zoals ze ook te vinden waren op ‘A Night To Remember’.
Wel exclusief voor deze uitgave zijn de unplugged versies van ‘Wrong’ (deze recente single haalde al goud in april 2011 – meer dan tienduizend exemplaren verkocht in Zweden) en ‘Frozen’ waarbij de emotionele stem van Tom kippenvel verwekt. In het vierentwintig pagina’s tellende boekje lezen we een mooi woordje uitleg, Tom blikt mijmerend terug op de voorbije vijftien jaar. Verder is het boekje gevuld met knap fotomateriaal. Het is een mooie verzamelaar voor diegenen die nog niets in de kast hebben staan van deze fantastische band uit Gotenburg, maar ook de fans zullen er van genieten. Op naar het twintigjarige bestaan!
