I think this is the first time a 30-year-old album is my Choice of the Month, but there you go… NOBODY’S BUSINESS was a short-lived band, which is now all-but-forgotten. Their sole album was recorded in 1977, and released only in Japan. The band folded after only 18 months of existence. Trust Angel Air Records to bring this kind of material in the spotlight again.
The name of the band might mean nothing to you, but the members were hardly unknowns: Bobby Harrison was the original drummer for PROCOL HARUM, and later formed FREEDOM and SNAFU, switching to lead vocals in the process. Bassist Tony Stevens was in SAVOY BROWN, MIDNIGHT FLYER and FOGHAT, and Joe Jammer was the guitarist in OLYMPIC RUNNERS. Drummer was Jerry Frank. Classic rock music, drenched with blues, soul and funk. Echoes of GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, FOGHAT and David Coverdale’s early solo work are unmistakable. Songs like ‘Bleed Me Dry’, ‘Crucifier’ and the slow ‘Losing You’ can compete with the best music of the era. Excellent stuff, this is!

Ik denk dat dit de eerste keer is date en 30-jaar oud album mijn Keuze van de Maand is, maar zo zie je maar weer… NOBODY’S BUSINESS was een band die niet erg lang bestond en nu zo goed als volledig vergeten is. Hun enige album werd opgenomen in 1977 en werd enkel in Japan uitgebracht. De band hield het na slechts 18 maanden al voor bekeken. Echt iets voor Angel Air Records om dit soort materiaal weer in de aandacht te brengen.
De naam van de groep zegt je misschien niet veel, maar de bandleden waren niet bepaald onbekenden: Bobby Harrison was de oorspronkelijke drummer van PROCOL HARUM – later vormde hij FREEDOM en SNAFU, waarbij hij overschakelde naar de leadzang. Bassist Tony Stevens speelde bij SAVOY BROWN, MIDNIGHT FLYER en FOGHAT, en Joe Jammer was gitarist bij OLYMPIC RUNNERS. Drummer van dienst was Jerry Frank. Klassieke rockmuziek, doordrenkt met blues, soul en funk. Onmiskenbare raakpunten met GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, FOGHAT en het vroege solowerk van David Coverdale. Nummers als ‘Bleed Me Dry’, ‘Crucifier’ en het trage ‘Losing You’ kunnen de concurrentie aan met de beste muziek uit die tijd. Dit is echt sterk materiaal!
