EISREGEN: Rostrot

Now that (icy)rain is regularly pouring down in this season, it appears to be the suitable time of the year for Eisregen to start a new offensive. I reviewed an album of them earlier, more precisely their previous ’Schlangensonne’, but actually I was more charmed by their side-project Marienbad which reminded me a bit of Empyrium. M. Roth (vocals) and Yantit (drums) are back after ‘Schlangensonne’ and their adventure ‘Werk 1 - Nachtfall’ under the moniker Marienbad. ‘Rostrot’ is no less than the ninth studio album in their career and it was traditionally recorded at Klangschmiede Studio E with producer Markus Stock (aka Schwadorf from Empyrium and The Vision Bleak).
After such a long time we all know where Eisregen stands for: on one side harsh black metal songs, on the other hand a German storytelling style is handled and then they go for hearty, clean vocals with lyrics full of criticism. Sometimes a proper sense of humour pops up, just listen to the hilarious ‘Kathie Das Kuchenschwein’. Serious topics can be found in ‘Bewegliche Ziele’ for instance. This track full of diversity (slow drawn-out guitars, creepy voice passes into harsh black metal, yet occludes with a spoken fragment and keyboards) deals with the subject of a robbery going mad with victims among police and hostages. With piano and strings the intro ‘Erlösung’ gives us only an introduction, since ‘Schakal: Ode An Die Streubombe’ happens to be hectic black metal with any orchestration. Right after they show the other side of the band. The single ‘Madenreich’ reminds me of a calm Nirvana composition and the seven minutes long ‘Ich Sah Den Teufel’ is a catchy gothic metal track with frivolous and fetching keyboards. The rest of the album remains shifting between fast black metal tracks, such as ‘Blutvater’ and ‘Wechselbalg’, and calmer, storytelling songs. ‘Fahles Ross’ for instance goes from soft piano and strings to rage all over. Finally we all share around the campfire with acoustic guitars in ‘Rostrot’. Strangely enough this semi-ballad reminds me of sensitive songs of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet, when you ignore the German lyrics. It is a beautiful hymn to dream and reflect on the diversity of this album. Maybe they will not gain new souls with it, but ‘Rostrot’ is a meritorious album that will follow ‘Schlangensonne’ in the German charts for sure.

Nu de (ijs)regen met bakken uit de hemel valt dit seizoen is het de geknipte periode voor de Duitse band Eisregen om een nieuw offensief in te zetten. Ik besprak al eens eerder een album van hen, het vorige ‘Schlangensonne’, maar was eerlijk gezegd veel meer gecharmeerd door hun zijproject Marienbad dat me aan Empyrium deed denken. M. Roth (zang) en Yantit (drums) zijn terug na ‘Schlangensonne’ en hun uitstapje ‘Werk 1 - Nachtfall’ onder de noemer Marienbad. ‘Rostrot’ is alweer het negende studioalbum en dat werd traditiegetrouw weer opgenomen in de Klangschmiede E studio met producer Markus Stock (aka Schwadorf van Empyrium en The Vision Bleak).
Na al die tijd weten we waar Eisregen voor staat: enerzijds heftige black metal songs, anderzijds komt de Duitse verhalende stijl boven en uit men zich met warme, gewone zang aan kritische teksten. Enige humor is hen ook niet vreemd, luister maar naar het hilarische ‘Kathie Das Kuchenschwein’. Ernstige onderwerpen vinden we bijvoorbeeld in ‘Bewegliche Ziele’. Deze gevarieerde track (slepende gitaren, creepy stem gaat over in heftige black metal, maar eindigt met een gesproken besluit en keyboards) gaat over een overval die slecht afloopt met slachtoffers onder politie en gegijzelden. Met piano en strijkers zet de intro ‘Erlösung’ ons in een klassiek kader, maar wel op het verkeerde been. Want ‘Schakal: Ode An Die Streubombe’ is drukke black metal met enige orkestratie. Meteen daarna toont men de andere kant van de band. De single ‘Madenreich’ doet me aan een kalme Nirvana compositie denken en het zeven minuten lange ‘Ich Sah Den Teufel’ is een vlotte gothic metal track met frivole en aanstekelijke keyboards. De rest van het album blijft een heen en weer taxiën tussen snelle black metal tracks als ‘Blutvater’ en ‘Wechselbalg’ en kalmere, verhalende songs. ‘Fahles Ross’ evolueert daarbij mooi van piano en strijkje naar een woedend vervolg. Tenslotte scharen we ons rond het kampvuur met akoestische gitaren in ‘Rostrot’. Vreemd genoeg doet deze semi-ballade me aan de gevoelige songs van Lynyrd Skynyrd of Molly Hatchet denken, wanneer je de Duitse taal even wegdenkt. Het is een mooie hymne om even weg te dromen en te bekomen van dit gevarieerd aanbod. Nieuwe zieltjes zullen er misschien niet mee gewonnen worden, maar ‘Rostrot’ is een goed album dat voorganger ‘Schlangensonne’ ongetwijfeld in de Duitse hitlijsten zal opvolgen.
