Besides his contribution to The Cursed recently, vocalist Bobby “Blitz†Ellsworth has found the time to sing on the fifteenth studio album of his main band Overkill. This band hailing from New Jersey was one of the first thrash bands, they have been around for more than a quart century and so I think every metal fan on earth is quite familiar with their history. What’s new? Not the music, that’s for sure and I am happy about that. More about this later.
The band released several albums on Megaforce Records, before they were signed by Atlantic and later Regain. The contract with Bodog Music happens to be a renewed cooperation with Jonny and Marsha Zazula, the former owners of Megaforce Records. In the familiar line-up we only notice a change behind the drums: Tim Mallare was replaced by Ron Lipnicki. ‘Immortalis’ goes once again for tight thrash metal in which the husky, pinched voice of Bobby and the excellent guitar skills of the Tailor/Linsk tandem are the biggest eye-catchers. Vocal-wise we have any reminiscence with AC/DC and U.D.O., the sure-fire guitar duties are just crafty, sometimes a bit bluesy (‘Hell Is’). In ‘Skull And Bones’ there are guest vocals of D. Randall Blythe of Lamb Of God, invoking a darker atmosphere. Not that much news under the sun for the rest. Like I said: proper thrash metal without fringe on this successor of ‘ReliXIV’ (2005). When you order the limited digipak version, it includes a bonus DVD with the Wacken Open Air concert of 2007. To conclude a pithy detail: Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) once did a live show with the band on October 29th, 2004.

Naast zijn uitstapje met The Cursed heeft zanger Bobby “Blitz†Ellsworth ook nog tijd gevonden om het vijftiende studioalbum van zijn hoofdband Overkill in te zingen. Deze band uit New Jersey was één van de eerste thrash bands, zij bestaan al meer dan een kwart eeuw en dus neem ik aan dat elke metalfan wel vertrouwd is met hun lange geschiedenis. Wat is er nieuw? Alvast niet de muziek, en gelukkig maar. Daarover later meer.
De band bracht meerdere albums uit op Megaforce Records, voor zij tekenden bij Atlantic en Regain later. Het contract met Bodog Music blijkt een hernieuwde samenwerking te zijn met Jonny en Marsha Zazula, de vroegere eigenaars van Megaforce Records. In de vertrouwde bezetting merken we alleen een wijziging achter de drums: Tim Mallare werd vervangen door Ron Lipnicki. ‘Immortalis’ houdt het bij strakke thrash metal waarin het schorre, geknepen stemgeluid van Bobby en het uitstekende gitaarwerk van de tandem Tailor/Linsk de grootste blikvangers zijn. Qua vocalen zijn er overeenkomsten met AC/DC en U.D.O., qua gitaarwerk hebben we gewoon vakwerk, dat in sommige nummers (o.a. ‘Hell Is’) een blues timbre heeft. In ‘Skull And Bones’ zijn er gastvocalen van D. Randall Blythe van Lamb Of God wat duidelijk een donkerder nummer oplevert. Verder is er weinig nieuws onder de zon. Zoals ik al zei: stuwende thrash metal zonder poespas op deze opvolger van ‘ReliXIV’ (2005). Als je de gelimiteerde digipak versie aanschaft, krijg je er een bonus dvd bij met het concert op Wacken Open Air in 2007. Om af te ronden een pittig detail: Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) deed ooit één live concert met de band, op 29 oktober 2004.
