THEE ORAKLE: Smooth Comforts False

Since 2005 Portuguese outfit Thee Orakle has been fine-tuning its rather intricate blend of progressive death metal with doom and gothic influences. During that time the septet has experienced playing in most of the Portuguese clubs and festivals, they gigged occasionally in Spain and their conceptual debut album ‘Metaphortime’ (2009) got rave reviews. With this sophomore album ‘Smooth Comforts False’, Thee Orakle has the ambition to get more fame and recognition abroad. They recorded the nine new songs in Portugal’s most known studio (Ultra Sound Studios) with producer Daniel Cardoso, a man who achieves more and more international respect as well.
In the line-up of seven musicians one meets with Pedro Silva for raucous, male grunts and Micaela Cardoso for fairytale-like female chants, while even band leader/guitarist Pedro Mendes adds a vocal contribution from time to time. As if such an extended line-up is not enough, they invited five guest musicians in addition. You can hear them in different songs, adding a special zest to each of them. It already starts with the opening track ‘Faraway Embrace’ in which Adolfo Luxuria Canibal of Mao Morta takes care of vocal honours. In essence his juicy growls did not differ a lot from those of singer Pedro. The whole thing sounds a bit Moonspell alike (and I am not telling this because Moonspell hails from Portugal as well). The real difference comes with the female vocals that are featured pretty much in every song, resulting in a constant interaction of beauty and the beast chants. They slacken down pace for a minute for an atmospheric guitar fragment, but the songs are mostly rough and dramatic.
The ongoing shifting from pace and atmosphere might be difficult to grab during the first spins, but it makes ‘Smooth Comforts False’ a (slow) grower. A blaring trumpet relishes the restless ‘Psi-Drama’. That is a guest appearance of Spanish Ricardo Formoso. ‘Mysterious Hours’ starts with thrash riffs; but flows into an ethereal atmosphere when Micaela does her vocal parts. The sensitive guitar solo could have been coming from a progressive rock band. After the short, instrumental ‘Foretoken’, we bath into a slightly oriental atmosphere during ‘Evil Dreams’. The band is befriended with Orphaned Land and, just like on their debut, the guest appearance of Yossi Sassi on bouzouki is the icing on the cake right here. Marco Benevento from the Italian band The Foreshadowing sings a duet with Micaela (dark clean voice) in the gothic tinged ‘Winter Threat’. Doom and thrash riffs are mixed in ‘The Bridge Of The River Flowing’, while now and then a single guitar solo or spoken fragment pops up in the songs. In the last track ‘Rescue Of Mind’ we even hear a hectic sample of a speech, but also a jazzy sax solo of Fabio Almeida. It is obvious that the band has worked hard to create this album and I give them a fair chance that they will be able to put themselves on the metal map outside Portugal with this Mediterranean cooperation.

Sinds 2005 werkt het Portugese Thee Orakle aan zijn vrij complexe mix van progressieve death metal met doom en gotische invloeden. In die tijd heeft de zevenkoppige band de meeste clubs en festivals in Portugal aan gedaan, speelde sporadisch ook in Spanje en kreeg het conceptuele debuutalbum ‘Metaphortime’ (2009) lovende recensies. Met dit tweede album ‘Smooth Comforts False’ heeft Thee Orakle nu de ambitie om haar muziek ook in het buitenland bekender te maken. Men nam de negen nieuwe songs op in Portugal’s bekendste studio (Ultra Sound Studios) met producer Daniel Cardoso, een man die ook meer en meer internationale faam geniet.
In de bezetting van zeven muzikanten treffen we Pedro Silva voor de ruwe, mannelijke grunts en Micaela Cardoso voor de feeërieke vrouwelijke zang, terwijl ook bandleider/gitarist Pedro Mendes af en toe een vocale duit in het zakje doet. Alsof zulk een uitgebreide bezetting nog niet voldoende is, nodigde men ook nog vijf gastmuzikanten uit die te horen zijn in verschillende songs en deze dan ook een aparte klankkleur geven. Dat begint al in het openingsnummer ‘Faraway Embrace’ waar Adolfo Luxuria Canibal van Mao Morta de vocale honneurs mag waarnemen. In wezen verschilt zijn sappige grunt niet zo gek veel van die van Pedro. Het geheel doet hier een beetje Moonspell achtig aan en dat zeg ik niet omdat deze band ook uit Portugal komt. Een wezenlijk verschil is de vrouwelijke zang, een vrij grote inbreng in elk nummer, zodat er een voortdurende wisselwerking ontstaat. Even houdt men de pas in voor een atmosferisch gitaarmoment, maar meestal zijn de songs ruw en dramatisch.
Het veelvuldig wisselen van tempo en sfeer is bij de eerste luisterbeurten moeilijk te volgen, maar het maakt van ‘Smooth Comforts False’ een groeiplaat. Een schetterend trompetje smukt het zo al onrustige ‘Psi-Drama’ op. Dat is een gastbijdrage van de Spaanse Ricardo Formoso. ‘Mysterious Hours’ start met thrash riffs, maar krijgt een etherisch sfeertje wanneer Micaela aan de beurt is. De gevoelige gitaarsolo lijkt wel uit de progressieve rock te komen. Na het korte, instrumentale ‘Foretoken’, baden we in een licht oosters sfeertje tijdens ‘Evil Dreams’. De band is bevriend met Orphaned Land en net als op hun debuut, vormt de gastbijdrage van Yossi Sassi op bouzouki hier de kers op de taart. Dit is duidelijk een album waaraan hard gewerkt is en ik geef de heren en dame dan ook een kans dat zij zich buiten Portugal op de metalkaart kunnen plaatsen met deze mediterrane samenwerking.
