NOCTURNAL RITES: The 8th Sin

Nocturnal Rites is such a typical band that has been around for years, but they were not afraid of changing style from time to time. They started as death metal outfit, switched to speed metal, next was power metal (that has become the main genre) and once again we have to deal with a kind of searching band on their eighth album, inserting all kinds of strange elements in their heavy but catchy metal. Nothing wrong with that; if it is done in a meritorious manner.
Let’s start with a general impression: this is steady power metal with a fine vocalist (Jonny Lindqvist finds the right balance between somewhat rougher and polished sounds) and guitar skills of Fredrik Mannberg and Nils Norberg that regularly add a surplus value to this album. This CD starts pretty strong with ‘Call Out To The World’ with accessible melodies and proper momentum. I looked up a bit confused when the single ‘Never Again’ kicked off with industrial influences and modern beats and distorted vocals. Well… fortunately it soon becomes a tight song, but these modern loops have an estranged effect. The band has made a video clip for this song, directed by drummer Owe Lingvall who set up his own video production company last year, called Village Road Film. References are videos of Wolf ‘I Will Kill Again’, Carnal Forge ‘Burning Eden’, Morgana Lefay ‘I Roam’ and nearly all Nocturnal Rites videos.
I would like to describe this as a heavier version of Bon Jovi, on the score of the voice of Jonny Lindqvist. Also because of the catchiness of the songs that come close to a commercial approach. Pace is slackened down seriously in the third track ‘Not The Only’ for example, but a fine guitar solo adds a zest to it. Most of the fast songs are sing-along tunes, the band tries to get a modern sound by using some loops in the intros and transitions, but it does not really fit with the straight-forwardness of the rest what follows. It is all a bit strange anyway. The melodic rock has a preference for medium paced songs in the powerful ‘Leave Me Alone’, the thoughtful ‘Till I Come Alive’ includes a heroic outburst, but soon after this we are covered under some flashing loops and modern sounding riffs in ‘Strong Enough’. No complaints about variegation on this album, but I fear for its consistency. They do add a (piano) ballad: ‘Me’ that is sung in a beautiful way, but it includes enough syrup to provide these well-known Belgian waffle factories (Lüttich, Liège, Luik) with sticky stuff for a year (including female vocals), and a bombastic gothic track ‘Pain & Pleasure’ flirts with symphonic elements. Are we hoping for a Jean Michel Jarre outro to occlude all this? Yes, because the guitar solo here is magnificent, though the song completely deviates from the rest of the material (again). Another remarkable feature is that the session keyboardist who does not belong to the permanent line-up of the band (Henrik Kjellberg, if my research is correct) has an important function. Those who want to see the catchiness of Bon Jovi combined with all kinds of Swedish experiments in a fairly tradition metal approach should have a listen to this.

Nocturnal Rites is typisch zo’n band die al jaren bestaat, maar intussen ook niet vies was van per album een ommezwaai te doen naar een andere stijl. Ze begonnen als death metal band, switchten naar speed metal, toen werd het power metal (dat is al n poos aan de gang) en ook op hun achtste studioalbum hebben we te maken met een zoekende band die allerlei (vreemde) invloeden in hun stevige maar catchy metal toelaat. Niks op tegen als dit goed gedaan is natuurlijk.
Laten we beginnen met een algemene indruk: dit is stevige power metal met een goede zanger (Jonny Lindqvist weet de juiste balans te vinden tussen ietwat ruw en gepolijst) en gitaarwerk van Fredrik Mannberg en Nils Norberg dat geregeld een meerwaarde geeft aan deze cd. Het album begint dan ook sterk met ‘Call Out To The World’ met toegankelijke melodieën en de nodige power. Ik kijk voor het eerst een beetje vreemd op wanneer de single ‘Never Again’ aanvangt met industriële invloeden en moderne beats en vervormde stem. Eh… gelukkig wordt het alsnog een strak nummer, maar die moderne loops hebben een bevreemdend effect. De band heeft een videoclip voor dit nummer gemaakt onder leiding van drummer Owe Lingvall die vorig jaar zijn eigen video productiemaatschappij opgericht heeft, genaamd Village Road Film. Referenties zijn video’s van Wolf ‘I Will Kill Again’, Carnal Forge ‘Burning Eden’, Morgana Lefay ‘I Roam’ en bijna alle Nocturnal Rites video’s.
Ik zou dit liefst omschrijven als een hardere versie van Bon Jovi, ook al vanwege het stemgeluid van Jonny Lindqvist. En ook vanwege de toegankelijkheid van de nummers die zelfs bijna een commercieel karakter hebben. Het tempo wordt bijvoorbeeld al flink teruggeschroefd in het derde nummer ‘Not The Only’, waar we wel genieten van een mooie gitaarsolo. De vlugge nummers zijn meezingers, de band tracht een moderne sound te verkrijgen door moderne loops in de intro’s en tussenstukken, maar dit vloekt een beetje met de straight forward aanpak van het vervolg. Het is allemaal een beetje vreemd. De melodieuze rock neemt graag een mediumtempo aan in het krachtige ‘Leave Me Alone’, het bedachtzame ‘Till I Come Alive’ kent een heroïsche uitval, maar even later worden we weer bedolven onder flitsende loops en modern klinkende riffs in ‘Strong Enough’. Aan variatie dus geen gebrek; maar ik vrees voor de consistentie van dit album. Smijt er nog een (piano) ballade tegenaan: ‘Me’, die wel mooi gezongen is, maar genoeg stroop bevat om de Luikse fabrieken een jaar van een kleverig goedje te voorzien (vrouwelijke vocalen incluis), en een bombastische gothic track ‘Pain & Pleasure’ die flirt met symfonische elementen. Zitten we daarna nog te wachten op een Jean Michel Jarre outro? Ja, want hier komt een prachtige gitaarsolo in. Het nummer wijkt wel helemaal af van de rest van het materiaal (alweer). Het valt me trouwens op dat de sessietoetsenist die niet tot de bezetting behoort (Henrik Kjellberg, als mijn opzoekwerk correct is) een flinke vinger in de pap heeft. Wie de toegankelijkheid van Bon Jovi eens gekoppeld wilt zien aan allerlei Zweedse experimentjes in een vrij traditioneel metal kader, waagt maar even een luisterbeurt.
