Helloween is doing well again! After a number of not so good received albums, ‘Keeper Of The Seven Keys – The Legacy’ turned into a direct hit which regained all lost territory at once. The band went on an extensive world tour, released a registration of it and once again the leading German band blazes of energy on ‘Gambling With The Devil’. This is not just modal power or happy metal, this is proper speed metal. That’s what we love!
Some of the songs were written during the long time on the road and you feel the fire burning within their hearts. After a dark introduction – spoken words by Biff of Saxon – the band kicks off the heavy way. It seems like Judas Priest in their heydays! Andy Deris sings high, extremely high. But a bit later he also captivates in the lower ranges, that’s why we find a lot of diversity on this album vocal-wise. In addition guitar skills of Weikath and Gerstner are nothing but sublime. ‘Kill It’ and ‘The Saints’ are high energy tracks that will appeal to every metalhead. After this, things go on in a more sensitive way, during the single ‘As Long As I Fall’. Here Helloween stands out in fetching choruses. The use of a vocoder gives this song a modern touch and they shot a videoclip for it. Another track is rather commercial as well, being a candidate for a second single: ‘Final Fortune’. On the other hand we have the hurricane of ‘Paint A New World’: smashing riffs and inciting guitar work, an epic tinge and fetching melodies, it is Helloween at its best. The triptych ‘The Bells Of The 7 Hells’, ‘Fallen To Pieces’ and ‘I.M.E.’ are next. The second one is a piano ballad passing into a vigorous guitar solo towards the end. The only song that is a bit mediocre is ‘Can Do It’, for also the two last songs show that Helloween is a band full of inspiration and energy again.
The album was once again produced by Charlie Bauerfeld and you can get a limited digipak with a bonus CD with two extra tracks, the video ‘As Long As I Fall’ and the making of, plus some more extras. Helloween heeft de smaak terug te pakken! Na een aantal minder goed ontvangen albums, bleek ‘Keeper Of The Seven Keys – The Legacy’ een voltreffer die het verloren terrein zonder problemen terugwon. De band ging een jaar op wereldtournee, bracht daar een registratie van uit en ook op ‘Gambling With The Devil’ bruist de toonaangevende Duitse band van energie. Dit is geen modale power of happy metal, maar pure speed metal. Zo horen we het graag!
Sommige nummers werden geschreven tijdens de lange periode onderweg en je voelt dat het heilige vuur terug begon te branden. Na de donkere introductie – ingesproken door Biff van Saxon – gaat de band er hard tegenaan. Het lijkt wel Judas Priest op zijn beste! Andy Deris zingt hoog, ontzettend hoog. Maar even later zoekt hij ook de lagere regionen op, zodat er alleen vocaal al heel wat variatie te ontdekken is. Verder is het gitaarwerk van Weikath en Gerstner gewoon subliem. ‘Kill It’ en ‘The Saints’ zijn high energy tracks die elke metalhead zullen bevallen. Daarna mag het wat gevoeliger, in de single ‘As Long As I Fall’. Hier munt Helloween terug uit in pakkende refreinen. Gebruik van de vocoder geeft dit nummer een modern tintje en er is ook een videoclip gemaakt van dit nummer. Een andere vrij commerciële song en kandidaat single nummer twee is ‘Final Fortune’. Maar daar staat de orkaan van ‘Paint A New World’ tegenover, keiharde riffs en spetterend gitaarwerk, een epische inslag en aanstekelijke melodieën, het is Helloween op zijn best. Het driedelige epos ‘The Bells Of The 7 Hells’, Fallen To Pieces’ en ‘I.M.E.’ is wat volgt. Het middelste nummer is een pianoballade die later toch uitmondt in een energieke gitaarsolo. Het enige nummer dat wat middelmatig is, is ‘Can Do It’, want ook de laatste twee nummers tonen aan dat Helloween terug een band vol inspiratie en werklust is.
Het album werd weer door Charlie Bauerfeld geproduceerd en je kan ook in beperkte oplage een digipak aanschaffen met een bonus cd met twee extra tracks, de video ‘As Long As I Fall’ en het verhaal daarover alsook nog meer extra’s. De eerste editie verschaft je ook toegang tot een wedstrijd om op www.helloween.org allerlei dingen te winnen.
