NACHTBLUT: Dogma

It seems as if Nachtblut comes very fast – scarcely eight months – with the successor of ’Antik’, but appearances are deceptive. It is true, Napalm Records launched that album at the international market in 2011, but it was self-released in 2009. Thus enough time – almost three years – to write new material. On purpose I did not read my opinions about ‘Antik’ before taking notes of ‘Dogma’. What did I find out? I come to a similar conclusion in influences, elements and bands of their ilk. Consequently ‘Dogma’ appears to be a very logical successor on earlier works and it continues the path they once have chosen. It means: dark, mostly very rhythmic gothic metal with obvious Rammstein influences in stamping, mechanic rhythms and semi-spoken German provocative lyrics with social criticism. As I said before, this five-piece, hailing from Osnabrück, will mainly appeal to the German speaking folks. In those areas they seem to be quite successful.
The title track opens the album with thunder and piano, soon passing into catchy gothic metal with keyboard layers, a rough (Rammstein) voice of band leader Askeroth and rhythms that ogle any proper club hits. ‘Der Weg Ist Das Ziel’ is nothing but a dark gothic version of an Amon Amarth melody (‘Victorious March’). That’s infectious of course, but a bit cheap. ‘Ich Trinke Blut’ is relished with wealthy orchestration and some screaming black metal shrieks and verges to Cradle Of Filth. Stamping rhythms and nearly cheerful new wave keyboards reign in ‘Eiskönigin’, while there are electro and industrial elements in the songs from time to time as well. Most of them are regaled with multilayered orchestral arrangements. They try to be dark and morbid, but most of all catchy. Not every song is a stunner and still I am not really impressed by Nachtblut. Well, they will appeal to some people, although it is just an okay band for the genre, nothing more. ‘Mein Herz In Ihren Händen’ and Mordlust’ are the heaviest tracks. ‘Vulva’ can be considered as a future club hit and one semi-ballad rounds off the album under the moniker ‘Schritte’.

Het lijkt alsof Nachtblut erg vlug – na slechts acht maanden – met de opvolger van ’Antik’ komt, maar hierbij mogen we niet uit het oog verliezen dat dit album weliswaar via Napalm op de internationale markt geworpen werd in 2011, maar reeds in 2009 in eigen beheer werd uitgebracht. Ruim de tijd – drie jaar in feite - om nieuw materiaal te pennen aldus. Bewust heb ik mijn bevindingen over ‘Antik’ niet herlezen voor ik notities genomen had over ‘Dogma’. Wat blijkt? Ik kom tot de identieke vaststelling en kan dus besluiten dat dit een erg logische opvolger is, want ‘Dogma’ gaat verder op het pad dat men gekozen had: donkere, meestal stampende gothic metal met overduidelijke Rammstein invloeden in de drammerige, mechanische ritmes en halfgesproken Duitse provocerende, sociaalkritische teksten. Zoals ik vorige keer al schreef richt dit vijftal uit Osnabrück zich vooral op de Duitstalige markt en daar schijnt men wel wat succes te oogsten.
Het titelnummer opent met donder en piano, maar wordt dan vlotte gothic metal met toetsen, een ruwe (Rammstein) stem van bandleider Askeroth en ritmes die lonken naar enige club hits. ‘Der Weg Ist Das Ziel’ is gewoon een zwarte gotiekversie van een Amon Amarth melodie (‘Victorious March’). Foei! Wel aanstekelijk natuurlijk, maar goedkoop. Het met weelderige orkestratie en wat krijsende black metal vocalen opgesmukte ‘Ich Trinke Blut’ neigt dan weer naar Cradle Of Filth. Stompende ritmes en ietwat vrolijke new wave toetsen heersen in ‘Eiskönigin’, terwijl er soms ook electro en industrial elementen in de songs verweven zijn. De meeste songs worden aangezet met veelgelaagde orkestrale arrangementen. Men tracht donker en morbide te zijn, maar vooral ook catchy. Niet elke song is daarbij geslaagd en nog steeds loop ik niet echt warm voor Nachtblut. Zij zullen echter wel een bepaald publiek aanspreken, al komen ze niet verder dan verdienstelijk in het genre. ‘Mein Herz In Ihren Händen’ en ‘Mordlust’ zijn daarbij de hardste songs, ‘Vulva’ lijkt me een clubhit in wording en een semi-ballad vinden we helemaal op het einde in de vorm van ‘Schritte’.
