LYKAION: Nothin' But Death

Founded in Rome in 2003, Lykaion releases its debut album after the EP ‘Swallowed By The Sea’ (2009) at Bakerteam Records, sub-label of well-known Scarlet Records. ‘Nothin’ But Death’ offers ten compact songs to the listener – the art of song-writing is what matters for these guys – going from classic gothic tunes in the vein of Sentenced (title track, ‘Free From All Your Fears’), eighties sleazy rock evocative of White Lion and Dogs D’Amour (the excellent ballad ‘Empty’, the decadent ‘Fuck You (I Love Myself’ or the catchy ‘Together’) or dynamic energy bursts with a kind of macho feel, showing any thrash/nu metal flavours. In that respect, ‘A Cold Summer Day’ (hello Machine Head), the overblowing ‘The Dance’ and the heavy ponderous ‘Passion Kills’ appear to be the heaviest songs of ‘Nothin’ But Death’.
The crystal clear sound of the guitars – especially charming during short acoustic intermezzos – is a surplus value in most of the songs. It proves that a rather unknown studio as 16th Cellar in a production of Stefano ‘Saul’ Morabito (Fleshgod Apocalypse, Adimiron) and the famous final touch of never sleeping guru Jens Bogren can lead to an excellent result. It is kind of hard to point out a proper fan-base for this record, but aficionados of traditional hard rock with now and then sidesteps to thrash and Finnish gothic can take their chances. It surely is no pure Italian matter, even if the last song happens to be sung in their vernacular language.

Ontstaan in Rome in 2003 brengt Lykaion na de ep ‘Swallowed By The Sea’ (2009) het debuutalbum uit bij Bakerteam, zusterfirma van Scarlet Records. ‘Nothin’ But Death’ biedt de luisteraar tien compacte songs – het liedje staat centraal bij deze heren – laverend tussen klassieke gothic naar Sentenced traditie (titelsong, ‘Free From All Your Fears’), jaren tachtig sleazy rock à la White Lion en Dogs D’Amour (de voortreffelijke ballad ‘Empty’, het decadente ‘Fuck You (I Love Myself)’ of het vlotte ‘Together’) of kernachtige songs waarin de spieren opgespannen worden en de band enige thrash/nu metalachtige sounds etaleert. In die optiek zijn ‘A Cold Summer Day’ (knipoogt naar Machine Head), het raggende ‘The Dance’ en het zwaar gierende ‘Passion Kills’ de meest heavy tracks van ‘Nothin’ But Death’.
De heldere klank der gitaren – waar men graag mee uitpakt in korte akoestische intermezzo’s – is een meerwaarde in de meeste songs en bewijst dat een schier onbekende studio als 16th Cellar in een productie van Stefano ‘Saul’ Morabito (Fleshgod Apocalypse, Adimiron) en de welbekende afwerking van slapenloze goeroe Jens Bogren tot een uitstekend resultaat kunnen leiden. Het is een beetje moeilijk om een doelgroep aan te duiden voor dit schijfje, maar liefhebbers van traditionele hardrock met af en toe een uitstapje naar thrash en Finse gothic kunnen een gokje wagen. Zeker geen pure Italiaanse aangelegenheid ook al is het laatste nummer ‘Dimenticheral’ in de moerstaal gezongen.
