PICTURED: The Strand Of Time

Hailing from Brittany in France comes the debut album ‘The Strand Of Time’ of Pictured, a band raised from the ashes of Aponium, once operating under the common moniker Picture. We are speaking about 2007. After two demos, these guys decided that the time had come to record a full length album under guidance of Neb Xort (Anorexia Nervosia). We know it will not be catchy material by now. That’s not necessary, we love those challenges, but this intricate death/thrash metal is a never ending labyrinth.
In despite of technical skills of the musicians, the material lacks a proper direction and momentum. Even after repeated spins it does not haunt you. After two mediocre songs (‘Another’ en ‘Metal’) you think it goes in the right direction with the medium paced ‘Howling Forest’, graced with some borrowed keyboard samplers. This moment of relief does not last long. Guitarists Niko Beleg and Sebastien Le Bellec regale us with an indefatigable cataract of scales, but where are the compositions? Only the slower, atmospheric ‘The Dwelling’ caught my attention in a positive sense, for the rest this stuffed thrash/death metal goes in and out of our ears without settling down in our memories. That’s quite a missed chance. These musicians are surely skilled, but they want to prove themselves so much on this debut album that the fun for listening fades with every minute. Don’t get me wrong, we do not expect catchy melodies in this genre, but loads of water will flow through the river Odet (local river) before we come up with superlatives.

Vanuit Bretagne in Frankrijk bereikt ons het debuutalbum ‘The Strand Of Time’ van Pictured, een band ontstaan uit de as van Aponium die eerst als Picture door het leven ging. We spreken over 2007. Na twee demo’s achtten de heren de tijd rijp om een volledig album op te nemen onder toeziend oog van Neb Xort (Anorexia Nervosa). We weten dan al meteen dat het niet om toegankelijk materiaal zal gaan. Hoeft ook niet, maar deze complexe death/thrash metal, voorzien van Carcass achtige vocalen van gitarist Niko Beleg is een mes dat aan vele kanten snijdt.
Ondanks de technische onderlegdheid mist het materiaal richting. Zelfs na meerdere luisterbeurten blijft het niet hangen. Na twee middelmatige songs (‘Another’ en ‘Metal’) denk je dat het even de goede richting uit gaat met het doordachte ‘Howling Forest’, waar even wat keyboard samplers geleend worden, maar het instemmend hoofdknikken is van korte duur. Gitaristen Niko Beleg en Sebastien Le Bellec vuren hun cataract van toonladders onvermoeibaar op ons af, maar waar zijn de composities? Enkel het tragere, atmosferische ‘The Dwelling’ viel nog in positieve zin op, verder gaat deze volgepropte thrash/death metal het ene oor in en het andere uit zonder zich merkbaar te nestelen in onze buis van Eustachius. Het is een gemiste kans. Deze muzikanten zijn zeker bekwaam, maar willen zich op dit debuut zozeer bewijzen dat het geheel totaal onbehapbaar wordt. Niet dat we in dit genre op pakkende melodieën zitten te wachten, maar er zal nog veel water door de Odet (plaatselijke rivier) moeten vloeien vooraleer wij onze superlatieven boven halen.
