ELECTRIC EEL SHOCK: Transworld Ultra Rock

Have you ever heared of Electric Eel Shock? Well, they left their native Japan in 1999 to see what they could make of America and they have been on a near constant world tour ever since. In early 2004 they released their first album “Go Europe!†By this time EES had already toured 27 countries on three continents. Follow up album “Beat Me†was written between EES's 27 festival appearances in the summer of 2004 and recording was completed early 2005 in Holland with legendary producer Attie Bauw (Judas Priest, Scorpions, etc). So far some details… “Transworld Ultra Rock†could have been the album title from a new Spinal Tap album but it isn’t, although by first listening to this album my thoughts were that also this band was quit a fun band but I think these guys take their music too serious for that. Although they have a famous producer for their albums their music is too ‘copy minded’ with a blues rock basic and a bit of stoner rock. Furthermore there is this annoying typical Japanese English accent in the vocals (sometimes I even thought the guy was singing in Japanese but oh no – it was a kind of English). Way too sad in the tracks “Joe†& “Joe II†they even have the guts to wink to Jimi Hendrix for instance. Also in “Limousine†there’s a riff that is stolen from Led Zeppelin; and if that isn’t enough there’s also a cover version of Mini Riperton’s “Lovin’ You†on this album, so bad that you could cut these guys their heart out. The whole album (also the breaks) is predictable and not acceptable as a serious one, but if you like to make a laugh with a nonsense kind of humor you can try this one.

Heb je ooit al van Electric Eel Shock gehoord? Ik vaag maar heb er geen spijt van dat het bij vaag bleef. Dit trio verliet in 1999 hun thuisland Japan om te zien of ze het in Amerika konden maken en sindsdien zijn zowat op de dool over de ganse wereldbol. Begin 2004 brachten ze dan hun eerste plaat “Go Europe!†uit nadat ze doorheen 27 landen toerden en 3 continenten aandeden. De opvolger “Beat Me†werd geschreven gedurende hun 27 festival data in 2004 en werd in 2005 volledig ingeblikt in Nederland met legendarische producer Attie Bouw (Judas Priest, Scorpions, etc). Tot zover de details… “Transworld Ultra Rock†zou de album titel kunnen zijn van het nieuwste Spinal Tap album maar at is het niet, ookal dacht ik bij eerste luisterbeurt dat ook deze plaat één grote grap was vermoed ik dt deze heren hun muziek als te ernstig beschouwen. Al hebben de heren dan een beroemde producer voor hun platen hun muziek klinkt in elk geval te gekopieerd met een blues rock gevoel en een tintje stoner rock. Verder is er dan nog het vervelende Japans Engels accent in de zang (soms dacht ik zelfs dat er in het Japans gezongen werd maar nee – het was een soort Engels). Erg zielig is ook dat de groep het aandurft om te knipogen naar grootmeester Jimi Hendrix in de nummer “Joe†& “Joe IIâ€. Ook in “Limousine†zit een riff die zo gestolen blijkt te zijn van Led Zeppelin en alsof dat nog niet erg genoeg is staat er ook een cover versie van Riperton’s “Lovin’ You†op deze plaat, maar dan in een versie waarbij je de heren hun hart uit het lichaam zou snijden. Het ganse album (inclusief de breaks) zijn voorspelbaar en is in het geheel niet te accepteren als ernstige release, maar als je van non nonsens humor houdt kun je deze plaat wel eens uitproberen.
