RICHIE KOTZEN: Return Of The Mother’s Head’s Family Reunion

Richie Kotzen has had an incredible journey in the world of music as one of the best guitar players in the world, a voice on par with some of the greatest rock/soul singers and creative songwriting. He has played with other well known musicians, including Television performances with the band on Jay Leno and Regis and Kelly. He’s always included in books, magazines, and websites as one of the top guitarist's in the world! Also one of the few artists to be honored by Fender Guitar with two signature model guitars; by Cornford Amplification his own signature series guitar amp RK100. He has amassed a 30 plus album discography and he is just getting warmed up. Now, he has just completed his album, “Return Of The Mother Head’s Family Reunionâ€. The original “Mother Head's Family Reunionâ€, released in 1994, was an intimate look inside Richie's world at the time. Fresh from his stint in Poison, newly married, and set to make his major label solo debut, all eyes were on Richie. He had released three solo albums between 1989 to 1991 for the indie label Shrapnel Records before joining Poison in January 1992. “Mother Head's Family Reunion†was a lyrical diary of sorts for all that happened in 1993-1994. Ever-present were the virtuosic guitar skills that made Richie stand out in the late 1980's/early 1990's guitar player scene. What was not expected with “Mother Head's Family Reunion†was the maturity and diversity shown not only as a guitarist but also as a songwriter and vocalist. This was due primarily and unjustly because of he was only 22 when MHFR was released. Such growth displayed on this ‘masterpiece’ was responsible for his expanding and loyal fanbase. Once again, Richie Kotzen proves to be a virtuoso guitar player with magnificent songwriting and vocal skills. No doubt that Kotzen is a hard rock icon in times where it is rather difficult to find one. This album also marks the recording debut of Richie's beloved 10 year old daughter, August Kotzen. She definitely gives her dad a run for his money. Judging by the talent displayed on the four tracks in which she appears, she will make an impact on the music industry if she chooses to follow in her dad's footsteps. The album’s opener, “Go Fasterâ€, shows immediately Richie’s intentions; hard guitar-based rock with the necessary touch of blues. Kotzen’s voice is fantastic and brings all of his feelings to the surface. Showcasing Virgil's funky bass runs as well as an extremely catchy chorus and of course the background vocals of August Kotzen. “You know that†is a fusion funky track whereby Arlan shines on his keyboards. Once again the harmonies provided by August and her daddy bring this tune into another level together with another tasteful solo from the man! “Fooled Again†is one of the songs that shows that this is a guitarist’s album. Nice melodic line with thunderous guitar solo at the end and multi-layered vocal harmonies. Arlan's keys touch give this epic a heavenly feel and Virgil’s bass groove really shines. This tune is so good that you will be stunned that eight minutes had just went by! “Faith†– the slowest and bluesy song - with incredible backing vocals and a keyboard carpet that holds all together starts off with Richie and Arlan blending their instruments into nothing short. Virgil, Franklin, and August backing them up in their ever-graceful way. The heavy-riff song “Bad Things†has a Black Crowes feel all over it! Richie puts some Jimi Hendrix mojo within his solo while the rest of the band holds down the fort. Jimi Hedrix fans will also love “Dustâ€, a song with dirty overdriven sound in the beginning while - as the song reaches the chorus - it sounds like Deep Purple meets Stevie Ray Vaughan whereby Arlan blends in some psychedelic keys to make this song a cocktail of energy! The piano driven track “Chase it†is mixed with wonderful vocal harmonies, so much so that this could easily be a top ten radio hit in the U.S. Richie's solo is one that would make Slash go back to the school board. Also “Do It Yourself†will be a hit, with nice lyrics, catchy hooks and a sing along chorus. Musically speaking, it will have you tapping your foot along for the duration. I warn you to turn the bass knob downwards on “You’re crazy†because Franklin's subtle earthquaking bass drum along with Virgil's bass groove will leave you trembling. Richie's wah-wah infused guitar intermingles beautifully with Arlan's sparse keys on this one too. While the opening bars of “Feed My Head†are reminiscent to the opening run of "Socialite" from the original MHFR, it fits as this appears to lyrically be a sequel of the aforementioned track. Franklin lays down a funky backbeat drum that fits perfectly with Virgil's bass licks. Richie's aggressive vocals are one of his heavier performances while his guitar playing is exactly what his fans have to expect from him. “Can You Feel It†shows why Richie Kotzen is one of the best guitar players in the world; blues to the edge with another blistering solo in the back and brilliant harmonies of August Kotzen. “Drift†is the extra bonus song only included in the European and Japanese release of “Return Of The Mother Head’s Reunionâ€. Richie has returned to a more guitar oriented approach without sacrificing the song. You can only hope that Richie keeps this line-up together for a long time...

Richie Kotzen heeft een indrukwekkende geschiedenis als één van werelds beste gitaristen met een ongelooflijk stemgeluid en een eigen creatieve compositiestijl. Hij speelde al samen met en indrukwekkende lijst aan internationale talenten, was te zien in TV shows van Jay Leno en Regis and Kelly, wordt steeds vernoemd in boeken, tijdschriften en websites aangaande topgitaristen etc. Ook behoort hij tot de enkelingen die door Fender gitaren verkozen werden voor maar liefst twee signature modellen, en door Cornfeld Versterkers gehonoreerd werd door de eigen signature serie R100 versterker. Kotzen heeft reeds meer dan 30 albums op zijn naam staan en het lijkt alsof de man net opgewarmd raakt. Recentelijk heeft hij net zijn “Return Of The Mother Head’s Family Reunion†album voltooid. Het originele “Mother Head's Family Reunionâ€, uitgebracht in 1994, was een intieme kijk in Richie's leven in die tijd. Net de ervaring met Poison rijker, hertrouwden een groot solo album in de maak waren alle ogen op Richie gericht toen. Voordien had hij al drie solo platen uitgebracht bij Sharpnel Records tussen 1989 & 1991 alvorens hij Poison vervoegde in januari 1992. “Mother Head's Family Reunion†was een lyrisch dagboek van datgene wat plaatsvond in 1993 – 1994. Het succes van dit meesterwerk droeg ongetwijfeld bij tot zijn succes en trouwe fan aanhang. Nu weer toont Richie Kotzen weer een ongelooflijk virtuoze gitarist te zijn met ongelooflijke componeer talenten en zangprestaties. Het leidt geen twijfel dat Kotzen een hard rock icon is en dit in tijden waarin het soms moeilijk is om er één te vinden. Op dit nieuwe album vind je ook het muzikale debuut van zijn geliefde 10 jarige dochter August Kotzen en deze geeft haar vader wel waar voor zijn geld. Oordelend op de vier nummers waarin ze haar bijdrage levert, zal ze zeker een impact hebben op de muziekindustrie als ze er ook voor kiest om in haar vaders voetsporen te treden. Het album opent met “Go Faster†die onmiddellijk aangeeft wat Richie’s intenties zijn op deze plaat. Harde gitaar gerichte rock met de nodige blues feel. Kotzen’s is optimaal en brengt al zijn gevoelens naar de oppervlakte. Verder ook Virgil’s funky baslijn die doorheen het geheel geweven zit samen met pakkende refreinen en natuurlijk August Kotzen’s achtergrondzang. “You know that†is een fusion funky track waarin Arlan schittert op de toetsen. Ook hier weer mooi vocale harmonieën van August en haar vader die het geheel tot een hoger niveau brengt samen met een prachtige gitaarsolo van de man zelf. “Fooled Again†is één van de nummers die aantonen dat dit een gitarist album is. Mooie melodie lijnen een overdonderende gitaarsolo op het einde n afgewerkt met vocale harmonieën. Arlan’s toetsenspel geeft dit epic een hemels gevoel waarin ook Virgil’s baslijn weer uitblinkt. Dit nummer is zo goed dat je versteld staat hoe snel acht minuten zo voorbij kunnen zijn. “Faith†– Het traagste en bluesachtige nummer met ongelooflijke achtergrondzang en mooi toetsentapijt dat alles samenhoudt start met een samenspel van Richie en Arlan die hun instrumenten in elkaar doen smelten. Virgil, Franklin, en August ondersteunen hen hierbij op gracieuze wijze. Het van krachtige riff voorziene “Bad Things†heeft een zeker Black Crowes gevoel over zich waarin Richie een Jimi Hendrix mojo verwerkt in zijn solo terwijl de rest van de band de rest van de burcht bij elkaar houdt. De Jimi Hendrix onder ons zullen ongetwijfeld ook houden van “Dustâ€, een nummer met een overstuurde stratocaster sound in het begin terwijl – wanneer het nummer het refrein bereikt – het meer gaat klinken als Deep Purple meets Stevie Ray Vaughan waarin Arlan met zijn psychedelisch toetsenwerk een cocktail van energie tevoorschijn tovert. Het meer piano gerichte “Chase It†is vermengt met knappe harmonie vocalen die het geheel zo pakkend maakt dat het met gemak een top tien hit in de U.S. zou kunnen worden. Richie's solo hierin is één die Slash meteen terug naar de schoolbanken zou verwijzen. Ook “Do It Yourself†is best hitgevoelig met knappe zangpartij, pakkende ‘hooks’ en ene meezingrefrein. Muzikaal gezien een nummer om met je voet mee te tappen gedurende het ganse nummer. Voor volgende waarschuw ik je de basknop van je installatie terug te draaien want in “You’re Crazy is het Franklin’s subtiel basdrumwerk, samen met Virgil’s bas groove aangevuld met Richie's wah-wah’s doordrongen gitaargeluid dat prachtig samen gaat met Arlan’s toetsenspel doet je versteld staan. De openingstonen van “Feed My Head†staan zowat gelijk met de openingsmelodie van "Socialite" van het originele MHFR, passend bij de vocale melodie en tekst zoals het hoort. Franklin onderbouwt dit met een funky backbeat die perfect aansluit bij Virgil’s bas lick (of omgekeerd). Richie's agressieve zang hier is één van zijn krachtigere vertolkingen terwijl hij bij deze exact uit de gitaar halt wat de fans van hem verwachten. “Can You Feel It†toont dan weer waarom Richie Kotzen één van de beste gitaarspelers genoemd mag worden, een bluesy nummer met een scherp randje, briljante harmonievocalen van August Kotzen en een spetterende solo op het einde. “Drift†is de extra bonus die enkel te vinden is op de Europese en Japanse uitgave van de “Return Of The Mother Head’s Reunion†release. Richie is terug van nooit weg geweest met een meer gitaar georiënteerde aanpak zonder afbraak aan de nummers op zich te doen. Je kan met deze schijf enkel hopen dat Richie deze bezetting voor lange tijd bij elkaar kan houden….
