OLYMPOS MONS: Medievil

‘Medievil’ of Olympos Mons is a power metal album that impresses me much more than other albums in that genre might do sometimes. After this statement, I owe you an explanation, I confess. Firstly the production (Finnvox Studio) is of a kind you really get overwhelmed, it seems as if you are sitting in the middle of a medieval performance. Secondly, it is power metal indeed, but graced with tons of symphonic elements and with a ruthless mauling rhythm section, so that one may speak of thrash-like power metal. No happy metal at all, but a dark, heavy, bombastic piece of theatre with grandeur for almost an hour. And last but not least: vocals and guitar skills are superb!
Is it a coincidence that Olympos Mons hails from Finland? I don’t know, but that is where guitarist Jari Sundström and vocalist Ian Highhill met each other in 2002 during a concert and they discovered their congenial passion for symphonic melodic metal. The adventure had begun! Both musicians were quite experienced – Jari even in classical music – and they should determinate the sound of the band through the years. The dark, romantic lyrics and aggressive guitar style are idiosyncratic traits of Olympos Mons. The first album ‘Conquistador’ (2004) was a success and sold several thousand copies, but distribution was not that well. For the second album, this ‘Medievil’, a worldwide deal with Scarlet Records was inked.
From the classical intro of ‘One Word’ on, you are led away into a world of glorious metal with swift pace and alluring choruses to sing along. This victorious feel is retained in ‘Frozen’. ‘The Emperors Return’ is announced by trumpet sounds and orchestral arrangements are great in this song. The mauling ‘Wolves’ with its flashing guitar solo is another direct hit. But also the heroic ‘A Race Between Two Hearts’ – in which we hear violin – has some parts to sing along full-throated and it brings you in a cheerful temper. Even during a slow song as ‘Fire And Ice’, these Finns know how to enchant us; just listen to the beautiful emotive guitar solo! Darkness of the Middle Ages resounds in the strange, ominous chants in ‘Medievil’. Did I tell you that this record is full of voluminous dark choirs? It makes the entire thing even more impressive. Vocalist Ian is an excellent singer who executes the songs in an expressive way. Never forced, never too high-pitched, always full of emotions. I truly love the latest track ‘Locked In Chains’ because of its grandness. Storytelling like Uriah Heep and epic like Black Sabbath. This may be a bit strange comparison, but what a stunner! Finally a hint to summarize everything: this has more in common with Turisas than with Stratovarius. Lyrically, musically and production-wise a stunner in the genre!

‘Medievil’ van Olympos Mons is een power metal album dat me veel meer aanspreekt dan andere albums in dat genre soms. Na deze openingszin ben ik jullie natuurlijk een verklaring schuldig. Ten eerste is de productie (Finnvox Studio) van dien aard dat je overweldigd wordt, je lijkt wel middenin een middeleeuws schouwspel te zitten. Ten tweede is dit wel power metal, maar met heel wat symfonische elementen en met een meedogenloos beukende ritmesectie zodat je bijna van aan thrash grenzende power metal kunt spreken. Helemaal geen happy metal dus, maar een zwaar, donker, bombastisch theaterstuk met grandeur van bijna één uur. En ten derde is de zang en het gitaarspel super.
Is het weer toeval dat Olympos Mons uit Finland komt? Ik weet het niet, maar daar ontmoetten gitarist Jari Sundström en zanger Ian Highhill elkaar in 2002 tijdens een concert en ontdekten zij een gezamenlijke passie voor simfonische melodieuze metal. Het avontuur was begonnen! Beide muzikanten hadden al heel wat ervaring – Jari zelfs met klassieke muziek – en zouden door de jaren heen het geluid van de band blijven bepalen. De donkere, romantische teksten en het agressieve gitaarspel zijn hoofdkenmerken van Olympos Mons. Het eerste album ‘Conquistador’ (2004) oogstte veel bijval, maar de verdeling liep mank en dus werd er voor album nummer twee, dit ‘Medievil’, een wereldwijde deal getekend met Scarlet Records.
Vanaf de klassieke intro van ‘One Word’ wordt je meegesleept in een wereld van glorieuze metal met een gezwind tempo en uitnodigende meezingrefreinen. Het victorieus gevoel houdt aan in ‘Frozen’. ‘The Emperors Return’ wordt aangekondigd met trompetgeschal en de orkestrale arrangementen zijn erg knap. Het beukende ‘Wolves’ met zijn flitsende gitaarsolo is een al even grote voltreffer, maar ook het heroïsche ‘A Race Between Two Hearts’ – waarin we viool horen – heeft stukken om mee te zingen uit volle borst en brengt je in opperbeste stemming. Zelfs in een kalm nummer als ‘Fire And Ice’ weten deze Finnen te begeesteren; hoor die prachtige gitaarsolo maar eens! De duisternis van de Middeleeuwen weerklinkt in de vreemde, onheilspellende gezangen in ‘Medievil’. Heb ik jullie al verteld dat ‘Medievil’ volstaat met volumineuze donkere koorzang, wat het geheel nog imposanter maakt? Zanger Ian is een uitstekende zanger die de nummers expressief vertolkt. Nergens geforceerd, nergens te hoog, altijd vol gevoel. Het laatste nummer ‘Locked In Chains’ spreekt me dan weer extra aan door zijn grootsheid. Verhalend als Uriah Heep en episch als Black Sabbath. Een beetje rare vergelijking misschien, maar wat een knaller! Tot slot nog een hint om alles samen te vatten: dit ligt dichter bij Turisas dan bij Stratovarius. Tekstueel, muzikaal en productioneel een topper in het genre!
