ASHES YOU LEAVE: The Cure For Happiness

Late nineties and right after the millennium switch, Ashes You Leave released four meritorious albums. They were the first Croatian band in doom/gothic metal genre achieving international success (although we should not imagine too much – it remained underground). We were happy to find out that comeback album ‘Songs Of The Lost’ broke the silence in 2009 and we could even watch the band at Brutal Assault Festival in Czech Republic live.
Three years later, ‘The Cure For Happiness’, their sixth studio album, is ready. Again a new female singer. Once more a new label. But this album has many reasons for praise, thus thumbs up that it will catch the attention of many people! Ashes You Leave creates the kind of gothic doom metal with a female singer that stands out. Here you do not hear the next average soprano chants, but the new Italian singer Giada “Jade†Etro who is skilled in many ranges. She really does an amazing job, surely when you realize that this happens to be her first studio recording. That happened at the G.I.S. Studios in Rijeka (Croatia) with producer Matej Zec. This is highly recommended, musically as well as lyric-wise. Ashes You Leave has always had a kind of Slavonic refinement. Their native roots are reflected in the music, that is why they are properly different from all those gothic bands in the comfort zone with a shallow sound of one-in-a-dozen or commercial flavour. Here we find genuine doom/gothic, the kind of style that made us purchase many albums in the nineties. In this respect they are a bit akin to the underrated Silent Stream Of Godless Elegy from Czech Republic. Violin and flute add a zest to the whole thing.
It does not mean that Ashes You Leave did not develop or evolved. They take the time to fine-tune and perfect every album until they are really satisfied and you notice that. Even if you are not a dedicated fan of female vocals or the typical genre, ‘The Cure For Happiness’ is worth your full attention. This is not typical doom either, there is much more diversity in the music. Take opener ‘Devil In Disguise’ as paradigm for instance: with classical piano and tight riffs we get our first encounter with female chanteuse Giada, a melancholic violin adds some beautiful accents and a marvellous guitar solo flies over the unwieldy doom riffs. Nice! ‘Only Ashes You Leave’ is an idiosyncratic gothic song with violins following the riffs. Male vocals echo during the title. The bass intro of ‘For The Heart, Soul And Mind’ is regaled with juicy female vocals, but also here the violin and male grunts complete the whole picture. The Slavonic atmosphere in ‘The Ever-Changing’ is relished with a flute intermezzo of guest musician Ana Toric, serenity in the midst of wilder rock instrumentation. Acoustic passages and drama prevail in the epic ‘Meant To Stray’. Every composition has depth and sometimes (in ‘Reality Sad’) one can hear progressive turns in between those chopping riffs. The genuine doom atmosphere always prevail, just listen to the final ‘…For Happiness’ that rounds off in a wonderful manner with female and male vocals, while having an opulence of dynamic riffs and melodic guitar skills. This is an amazing album, the best ever from Ashes You Leave!

Eind jaren negentig en vlak na de eeuwwisseling bracht Ashes You Leave vier verdienstelijke albums uit. Zij waren daarmee de eerste Kroatische band in het gothic doom metal genre dat internationale faam verwierf (al moeten we daar niet al te veel bij voorstellen – het bleef underground). We waren dan ook verheugd dat ‘Songs Of The Lost’ in 2009 de stilte verbrak en we de band zelfs voor het eerst live aan het werk konden zien op Brutal Assault Festival in Tsjechië.
Drie jaar later is ‘The Cure For Happiness’ klaar, hun zesde studioalbum. Weer een andere zangeres. Weer een nieuw label. Maar dit album heeft vele troeven, dus hopen we dat er ditmaal wat meer aandacht aan besteed wordt! Ashes You Leave maakt het soort gothic doom metal met een zangeres dat zich onderscheidt van de massa. Hier hoor je geen sopraantje, maar de nieuwe Italiaanse zangeres Giada “Jade†Etro is van alle markten thuis en zet een puike prestatie neer, zeker wanneer we in ogenschouw nemen dat dit haar eerste studio opnamen zijn. Dat gebeurde in de G.I.S. Studios in Rijeka met producer Matej Zec. Zowel muzikaal als tekstueel is dit een aanrader. Ashes You Leave heeft ook altijd een zeker Slavisch raffinement gekend. Hun afkomst schemert door in de muziek, zodat zij in schril contrast staan met de gothic bands die de comfortzone kiezen met een eenheidsgeluid of commerciële knipoog. Hier wordt nog ware doom/gothic bedreven, het soort dat ons in de jaren negentig tot tal van aankopen wist te verleiden. In die optiek kan men ze vergelijken met het ondergewaardeerde Silent Stream Of Godless Elegy uit Tsjechië. Viool en fluit voegen net dat extra toe.
Dat betekent niet dat Ashes You Leave geen evolutie doorgemaakt heeft. Ze nemen de tijd om elk album te perfectioneren tot men uitermate tevreden is en dat merk je. Zelfs al ben je geen fan van vrouwelijke vocalen of het typische genre, dan nog is ‘The Cure For Happiness’ je aandacht meer dan waard. Ook is dit geen typische doom plaat, daar is de verscheidenheid te groot voor. Nemen we bijvoorbeeld opener ‘Devil In Disguise’: met klassieke piano en strakke riffs maken we kennis met zangeres Giada, een weemoedige viool legt mooie accenten en een knappe gitaarsolo zweeft over de logge doom riffs. ‘Only Ashes You Leave’ is een gothicnummer met een slepende viool die de riffs volgt. Mannelijke zang vormt een echo tijdens de titel. Het basintro van ‘For The Heart, Soul And Mind’ krijgt smeuïge zang als toemaatje, maar ook hier vormen viool en mannelijke zang (soms grunt) een mooi geheel. De Slavische sfeer in ‘The Ever-Changing’ wordt aangezet door een fluit intermezzo van gastmuzikant Ana Toric, ingetogen en sereen temidden van een wilder rockinstrumentarium. Akoestische passages en drama vieren hoogtij in het epische ‘Meant To Stray’. Elke compositie getuigt van diepgang en soms (‘Reality Sad’) zijn er progressieve wendingen te vinden tussen de hakkende riffs. De doom sfeer blijft voorop, luister maar naar eindfase ‘…For Happiness’ dat voortreffelijk afsluit met zowel vrouwelijke zang als mannelijke grunts en daarbij grossiert in dynamische riffs en melodieus gitaarwerk. Dit is een heerlijk album, het beste wat Ashes You Leave tot nog toe gemaakt heeft!
