ACARO: The Disease Of Fear

American five-piece Acaro played its first gig in October 2008. Since then they have worked hard to get more fame by playing as much gigs as possible, like some with Killswitch Engage. Vocalist Chris Harrell gives the general impression of the music a proper metalcore feel: the kind of music that creates moshpits at every gig.
This pent-up rage and energy already rules in the title track that kicks off this studio debut. Yet it is (fortunately) not only screaming brutality that reigns. With Felipe Roa and Chris Robinson, the Americans have two excellent guitarists with feeling for melody. Sometimes their clean guitar sound is a bit akin to Swedish death metal (think of Dismember) and early Metallica seems to be another influence. The tight rhythm section nails down a thrash-like aureole.
Most of the songs are brief, while ‘R.O.J.’ with its six minutes turns out the most adventurous one. Atmospheric parts and calmer guitar skills – reminding us one more time of Metallica – add a diverse zest to it. ‘Forever Is Temporary’ has also a melodic intro and a piano outro. But of course, the main dish is inciting brutality. They have shot a video clip for the song ‘Becoming The Process’. Acaro does not bring anything new, but as debut it is not bad at all (yet very short, only half an hour).

Het Amerikaanse vijftal Acaro speelde in oktober 2008 een eerste show en heeft sindsdien hard gewerkt om zoveel mogelijk naam te maken via concerten, zoals met Killswitch Engage. Zanger Chris Harrell trekt de muziek onvoorwaardelijk in de richting van metalcore: muziek waar moshpits op ontstaan als paddenstoelen op een mossige grond.
Deze gebalde energie komt al degelijk over in het titelnummer waarmee dit studiodebuut mee van start gaat. Toch is het (gelukkig) niet al schreeuwerige brutaliteit wat de klok slaat. Met Felipe Roa en Chris Robinson hebben de Amerikanen namelijk twee schitterende gitaristen in huis met gevoel voor melodie. Veelal wordt de heldere gitaarklank van Zweedse death metal (denk aan Dismember) gehandhaafd en vroege Metallica lijkt me ook een duidelijke invloed. Een retestrakke ritmesectie nagelt alles op een thrashy manier aan elkaar.
De meeste songs zijn kort, terwijl ‘R.O.J.’ met zijn zes minuten het meest avontuurlijk is. Atmosferische stukken en kalmer gitaarwerk dat alweer aan Metallica doet denken brengen daar wat afwisseling. Ook ‘Forever Is Temporary’ heeft een melodieuze intro en een piano outro. Maar natuurlijk blijft het vooral opzwepend. Voor het nummer ‘Becoming The Process’ heeft men een videoclip gemaakt. Acaro brengt niets nieuws, maar als debuut zeker niet slecht (maar wel erg kort – een half uur).
