TOURETTES: Treason Songs

Michele Madden is certainly one of the prime visual revelations in recent times, especially live in person. On stage, she makes a powerful impression on both friend and foe alike, with her enormous dedication, vocal capabilities and artful capers. She says she feels more like a beast than a woman, but when you hear her, she sounds like a man. Her grunts are the highlight of the performance because she sounds so masculine that nobody is convinced that she is actually a ‘lady’. Perhaps ‘lady’ is an out of place term because she screams out offensive language and behaves in a manner that’s anything except womanly!
Tourettes released an album (‘Sicksense’) last year under the band name of Tourettes Syndrome. This album contained all sorts of metal music where Michele could completely utilize her vocal capacities. This time around, the music is more like Death Metal with Metal Core influences. This makes all the songs sound very similar to one another. The vocal talents seem very far away. This is a real tragedy because the band has so much talent and potential but this album just doesn’t have that. Luckily, there are a few shining moments on the CD with “Seasoned Destructionâ€, which contains some very nice, clean vocals…
I had expected more from ‘Treason Songs’. There are just too few mellow passages and way too many up tempo songs. The album gets lost in too much tension. This is a pity because they’re fascinating when they perform live. Next time better…

Eén van de visuele revelaties van de afgelopen tijd is zonder meer Michele Madden van Tourettes. Live springt ze zonder meer in het oog. Door haar enorme inzet, stemmogelijkheden en kunstige capriolen op het podium laat ze op vriend en vijand een imposante indruk na. Ze voelt zichzelf meer beest dan vrouw zegt ze, maar als je ze hoort klinkt ze als een man. Haar grunts vormen het hoogtepunt van het optreden, omdat ze zo mannelijk klinkt dat iedereen amper te overtuigen is dat ze wel degelijk een ‘dame’ is. Dame is misschien wel wat veel gezegd, want ze schuwt zeer aanstootgevende taal niet en gedraagt zich allesbehalve vrouwelijk!
Vorig jaar werd onder de naam Tourettes Syndrome het album ‘Sicksense’ uitgebracht. Dit album bevatte allerhande metal muziek waar Michele haar zangcapaciteiten volledig in kon onderbrengen. Ditmaal schuift echter de muziek teveel op naar death metal met metalcore invloeden, zodat alle songs teveel op elkaar lijken. De zangkunsten lijken verder weg dan ooit. Dit is een heel spijtige zaak, want de band heeft zoveel talent en bevat zulk een potentieel, wat dus met dit album niet is aangeboord. Gelukkig staan er toch nog een paar mooie momenten op het album, zoals in “Seasoned in Destruction†waar er een bijzonder mooi stukje clean vocals de aandacht weet te trekken…
Ik had meer van ‘Treason Songs’ verwacht. Veel te weinig rustige passages en veel te veel uptempo songs dus. Hierdoor verliest het album teveel aan spanning wat erg jammer is gezien ze live enorm sterk weten te boeien! Volgende keer beter…
