The first Christmas presents have arrived early this holiday season. But then, it usually is around this time when new CDs are released. That’s why you have to check out this CD from Threshold. After eight studio CDs, several fan club CDs and a few live albums, the time has now come for a collectible double CD…
This double CD is set up so that all the songs on the first CD are by Mac and the songs on the second CD are by Mac, Glyn Morgan and Damian Wilson. Although Wilson is a very solid singer, I find that the songs sung by Mac are a better fit for Threshold (and are better in general). Their new stuff sounds heavier and more modern. This puts Threshold in a place somewhere between Prog Rock and Prog Metal, which wasn’t the case before. Musically speaking, the songs are solid. This double collector’s album comes with a very nice booklet. Apart from that, there are no real new elements of music to be found. This album won’t be a big surprise for the established hard core fans. But this is the moment to get a hold of this CD if you don’t already have any other Threshold music at home because it does contain two full hours of pure listening pleasure.
I’m curious to see what the future brings now that Mac has unexpectedly left and is being replaced by Damian Wilson…

De eerste cadeautjes voor onder de kerstboom vallen al vroeg binnen dit jaar. Rond die periode komen namelijk meestal de nieuwe verzamel cd’s uit. In dit kader moet je ook deze verzamel cd van Threshold zien. Na een achttal studio cd’s, enkele fanclub cd’s en een paar live albums moet zo een dubbel verzamel cd wel kunnen vind ik…
De dubbel cd is zo opgesteld dat op de eerste cd allemaal songs met Mac staan en op de tweede cd songs met Mac, maar ook met Glyn Morgan en Damian Wilson. Hoewel ik deze laatste ook een heel sterke zanger vind, zijn de songs met Mac passender voor Threshold en dus veel beter. Tevens valt op dat het nieuwe werk moderner en steviger klinkt, waardoor het duidelijk wordt dat Threshold zich tegenwoordig precies tussen de progressieve rock en de progressieve metal bevindt, terwijl dit vroeger toch wel anders was. Nochtans staken de songs, muzikaal gezien, al van dag één erg sterk in elkaar.
Hoewel dit dubbel verzamelalbum voorzien is van een heel mooi boekje, wat we van SPV – Inside Out gewend zijn, kunnen we buiten enkele radio edits (lees: kortere versies dan de originele tracks) geen enkel nieuw element bespeuren. Voor de echte fans is dit album dus niet echt verrassend, maar voor diegene die nog niets in huis heeft van deze superband is dit hét moment, want het is voor de volle 2 uur genieten geblazen.
Ik ben wel benieuwd wat de toekomst gaat brengen nu Mac onverwacht is opgestapt en nogmaals door Damian Wilson is vervangen…
