It rarely happens that a band does an extensive European tour before the first album hits the stores. It happened to Engel however, replacing the split-up Hatesphere during their long tour with Amon Amarth and Dimmu Borgir. The expeditiousness of founder/guitarist/composer Niclas Engelin – known from In Flames, Gardenian and Passenger – will have a lot to do with it, for he truly wants to conquer the world with his new band, if we base ourselves upon things he said like “There is no room in this group for people who hesitate†and “You have to believe in what you doâ€.
Engelin wrote many songs in a pretty short time and twelve of them ended upon the debut album ‘Absolute Design’. He succeeded in gathering some experienced musicians of the Swedish Gothenburg scene around him. What else can we say about bass player Michael Hakansson for instance, former member of Evergrey who joined the band most recently? Or drummer Mojjo, also active in Runemagick and ex-Lord Belial? Second guitarist Marcus Sunesson got any recognition by playing in The Crown. Only vocalist Mangan Klavborn has no impressive curriculum vitae, but he does an excellent job on this album, in screaming vocals (a bit too much metalcore allied) as well as emotive clean vocals.
It resulted into a very modern sounding album, produced by In Flames vocalist Anders Fridén, assisted by Daniel Bergstrand. That’s an experienced guy as well. Everyone who reads metal reviews once in a while has seen this name numerous times. Engel made a proper impression on me in a live situation, but the songs did not instantly hook me. After several spins it remains tenable for this album. Maybe things went a bit too fast and the songs did not have the occasion to mature. When I read that Engelin has ten more songs ready for the next album right now, any sceptic feelings come up. Are we producing foodstuffs or talking about songs? With all respect for the endless inspiration of the musician, but somehow it feels like commercial thoughts reigns above making art. When we put all this aside, ‘Absolute Desgin’ is a meritorious debut, ruled by vigorous low-tuned riffing of Engelin, a sanguine portion extreme metal with slightly industrial touch and in ‘Next Closed Door’ showcasing a more melodic side of Engel. It is a fine start, but I wait for the sophomore album to come up with superlatives.

Het gebeurt zelden dat een band een uitgebreide Europese tournee kan doen nog voor het eerste album in de winkels ligt. Het overkwam Engel, die het gesplitte Hatesphere vervingen tijdens de uitgebreide tournee van Amon Amarth en Dimmu Borgir. De voortvarendheid van oprichter/gitarist/componist Niclas Engelin – eerder bekend van In Flames, Gardenian en Passenger - zal daar vast mee te maken hebben want hij is vastberaden de wereld te veroveren met zijn nieuwe band, getuige uitspraken als “Er is geen plaats in deze band voor mensen die aarzelen†en “Je moet geloven in wat je doetâ€.
Engelin schreef in ijltempo een groot aantal songs en twaalf ervan vormen het debuutalbum ‘Absolute Design’. Hij wist zich te omringen door ervaren muzikanten uit de Zweedse Gotenburg scene. Of wat dacht je van bassist Michael Hakansson die vroeger deel uitmaakte van Evergrey en als laatste de band vervoegde? Of neem drummer Mojjo, ook actief in Runemagick en ex-Lord Belial? Tweede gitarist Marcus Sunesson verwierf dan weer bekendheid in The Crown. Alleen zanger Mangan Klavborn heeft een minder indrukwekkende curriculum vitae maar aan zijn stem zal dat zeker niet liggen want op dit album doet hij het goed in zowel schreeuwerige ruwe vocalen (beetje te veel metalcore) als emotionele cleane vocalen.
Het is een erg modern klinkend album geworden dat geproduceerd is door In Flames zanger Anders Fridén, bijgestaan door Daniel Bergstrand. Dit is tevens een man die zijn vak kent; wie metal recensies leest, is de naam al ontelbare keren tegengekomen. Live maakte Engel een degelijke indruk op me maar het materiaal wist me niet meteen te overweldigen. Na meerdere luisterbeurten blijft dit ook een beetje gelden voor dit album. Misschien is het toch allemaal een beetje vlug gegaan en hebben de nummers geen tijd gekregen om te rijpen. Wanneer ik lees dat Engelin nu al tien nummers klaar heeft voor een volgend album, rijst er toch enig sceptisch gevoel in me op. Zijn we nu conversen aan het inblikken of nummers? Met alle respect voor de ongebreidelde inspiratie van de muzikant, maar er gaat ergens een alarmbelletje rinkelen bij me dat commercie hier boven kunst staat. Dit alles even terzijde geschoven is ‘Absolute Design’ wel een degelijk debuut dat overheerst wordt door het energieke laaggestemde riffwerk van Engelin, een uit de kluiten gewassen portie extreme metal met licht industriële touch en in ‘Next Closed Door’ ook een melodische zijde van Engel toont. Engel is goed gestart, maar ik wacht op een tweede album om de superlatieven boven te halen.
