A LIFE DIVIDED: The Great Escape

Electro rock: according to the undersigned only engendered to give disco freaks one moment of feeling tough (by hearing such heavy riffs). When an album includes remixes, I have the tendency to run away. But okay, A Life [Divided] fortunately does not exaggerate in danceable rhythms. Only in the first track ‘Lost’ things go terribly wrong. Furthermore this happens to be a pop/rock album with any occasionally heavy riffing in some of the songs, where electro sounds add a playful zest to the songs and with very good vocals by composer Jürgen Plangger.
Predecessor ‘Passenger’ was released two years ago and since then the success of the band has expanded and grown. The single ‘Heart On Fire’ became a huge success, they went on tour with Apocalyptica and they did sold out club shows. In addition they were on the bill of several Summer festivals. Thus JP is nothing but smart to go for a commercial approach. On top of that they try to avoid shallow lyrics. The songs on ‘The Great Escape’ deal with a subject we all know: the need to break with the routine of every day’s life and start all over with a clean slate. It is true: an escape can be motivated by emotions, by anger, by the urge for freedom, by hope or by resignation. Subject matter enough to write thirteen new songs, although there are songs about political refugees as well (‘Foreign Rain’ I guess).
Guitars are mainly used to place any chunky riffs, no solos. Keyboards on the other hand have an important role, not only as electro spielerei, but also piano and synthesizers in the background. The catchy rock of ‘It Ain’t Good’ even reminds me a bit of Pain. In ‘Foreign Rain’ we hear some esoteric female chants to illustrate the exotic character of the lyrics. They do it again: in the introvert starting ‘On The Edge’ we suddenly hear some grunts and heavy riffs. It is comparable with the song ‘Change’ from the former album. The beautiful ballad ‘If You Want To’ occludes, sung with a slightly distorted voice. That is another thing happening in more songs. For the regular metal fan ‘The Great Escape’ is not really interesting, but when you like to listen to light stuff from time to time, it is recommended. The band has a proper, good singer, compositions that (most of the times) haunt you and the album was mixed by Tue Madsen at Antfarm Studios and mastered by the Finnvox factory (Mika Jussila).

Electro rock: volgens ondergetekende alleen in het leven geroepen om verdoken discofreaks ook even een moment te bezorgen dat ze zich stoer voelen (bij enkele zware riffs). Wanneer er ergens remixen op een album verschijnen, heb ik altijd de neiging om ver weg te rennen. Maar goed, A Life [Divided] overdrijft gelukkig niet met hun dansbare ritmes, alleen in het eerste nummer ‘Lost’ gaat dat behoorlijk mis. Verder is dit een poprockplaat waar men lukraak wat zware riffs in sommige songs gestopt heeft, waar electroklanken de songs een speels timbre geven en waar goed op gezongen wordt door componist Jürgen Plangger.
Twee jaar geleden verscheen voorganger ‘Passenger’ en sindsdien is het succes van de band alleen maar gegroeid. De single ‘Heart On Fire’ werd een groot succes, men kon op tournee met Apocalyptica en deed vele clubshows die druk bezocht werden. Daarnaast speelde men op verscheidene festivals. JP is wel zo pienter om een commerciële koers te varen dus. Bovendien tracht men oppervlakkige teksten te vermijden. Zo handelen de songs op ‘The Great Escape’ allemaal over een gevoel dat iedereen wel eens heeft: de behoefte om uit je routine te breken en helemaal opnieuw te beginnen met een schone lei. Inderdaad: een vlucht kan ontstaan uit emoties, uit boosheid, uit de drang naar vrijheid, uit hoop op iets beters of uit berusting. Stof genoeg om de dertien nieuwe songs aan op te hangen. Maar er zijn ook songs die over politieke vluchtelingen gaan (waarschijnlijk ‘Foreign Rain’).
Gitaren worden enkel aangewend om enkele vette riffs te plaatsen, geen solo’s. Keyboards daarentegen spelen een belangrijke rol, niet alleen als spielerei met electro, maar ook piano en synthesizers als achtergrond. De vlotte rock van ‘It Ain’t Good’ doet me zelfs wat aan Pain denken. In ‘Foreign Rain’ horen we esoterische vrouwenzang om het exotische karakter van de tekst te illustreren. Men past het volgende trucje weer toe: in het introvert begonnen ‘On The Edge’ horen we plots wat grunts en zware riffs. Te vergelijken met ‘Change’ van het vorige album. De mooie ballade ‘If You Want To’ sluit af met licht vervormde ruimtelijke stem gezongen. Dat gebeurt trouwens ook (even) in sommige andere songs. Voor de modale metalfan valt hier weinig te rapen, maar wanneer lichtere kost ook al eens smaakt, dan is ‘The Great Escape’ wel een aanrader. De band beschikt over een goede zanger, composities die (meestal) aanspreken en het album kreeg een mix door Tue Madsen in de Antfarm Studio en een mastering in de fabriek van Finnvox (Mika Jussila).
