MY SOLILOQUY: The Interpreter

In 2007 multi instrumentalist Pete Morten was recruited by Threshold as live guitarist to tour in support of the ‘Dead Reckoning’ album. It would take until 2012 before the man became a full member of that British progressive rock outfit, in order to cooperate at their most recent album ‘March Of Progress’. For the rest he used to be the vocalist of power metal band Power Quest for a while. However, until now it was rather unknown that he also has an own project under the moniker My Soliloquy since 2002. Now that he gathers a bit recognition as Theshold member, it seems to be the right moment to release the debut album ‘The Interpreter’. He has played all the instruments and done the vocals on this album, only the drums were done by Damon Roots.
Morten’s voice demands any time to get used to. During opening track ‘Ascension Pending’ he sounds savoury with phrasing like an actor. That’s quite weird, although the music, also during ‘Flash Point’ appears to be proper lively prog metal with fervent guitar solos and additional keyboards. The beginning of ‘Corrosive De-Emphasis’ made me wonder: this is disco… but these inciting rhythm sounds soon go up in normal prog metal again. Fortunately. Three minutes later it seems like another song has started, but it is the same one with slackened pace and thoughtful vocals. Those vocals get some pompous overtones later. Then we arrive at a point of criticism for this debut: it is quite incoherent. ‘Fractured’ could be a fine Queensryche track on the other hand, since we have to admit that vocals are sometimes reminiscent to Geoff Tate’s voice.
The capricious music is graced with quite a lot guitar solos. One can find some fine moments on this album, like the beautiful, emotive guitar solo during ‘Dream In Extremis’, but that pops up out of nowhere without any fluent transition with the rest. To round off we have the ballad ‘Star’ with rather tearjerker vocals and so-so vocoder distortion on the voice for a synthetic effect. There are some good moments evocative of Threshold, Symphony X or Queensryche, yet it is not an album worth showering with superlatives. The band has the intention to play live gigs. Then guitarist Mike Gilpin, keyboardist Andy Berry and bassist Chris Sharp will be present as well.

In 2007 werd multi-instrumentalist Pete Morten aangeworven bij Threshold als live gitarist om te toeren voor het album ‘Dead Reckoning’. Het zou tot 2012 duren eer de man volledig ingelijfd werd bij de bekende Britse progressieve rock formatie om mee te werken aan hun tot nog toe laatste werkstuk ‘March Of Progress’. Verder was hij ook nog een poosje zanger bij de power metal band Power Quest. Tot nu toe was het echter weinig gekend dat hij een eigen project heeft onder de naam My Soliloquy sinds 2002. Nu hij enige bekendheid geniet is het de geschikte moment om het debuutalbum ‘The Interpreter’ uit te brengen. Hij heeft alle instrumenten en zang verzorgd op dit album, alleen de drums liet hij over aan Damon Roots.
De zangstem van Morten vraagt enige gewenning. Tijdens opener ‘Ascension Pending’ klinkt hij smeuïg, maar zijn toneelfrasering is soms vreemd, al is het, net zoals ‘Flash Point’ vinnige prog metal met gitaarsolo’s en begeleidende keyboards. Het begin van ‘Corrosive De-Emphasis’ is even schrikken: een discoritme weerklinkt, maar deze opzwepende ritmes sterven al vlug uit in normale prog. Gelukkig. Na drie minuten lijkt het wel een ander nummer, want dan wordt het nog veel trager met beschouwende zang. Die zang krijgt later trouwens weer een pompeus glazuurlaagje. En dan komen we bij het punt van kritiek van dit debuut: het is nogal onsamenhangend. Al zou ‘Fractured’ wel een goede Queensryche track zijn, want het dient gezegd dat de zang soms erg Geoff Tate achtig is.
De wispelturige muziek wordt verfraaid met meerdere gitaarsolo’s. Er zijn best goede momenten te vinden, zoals de mooie, gevoelige gitaarsolo tijdens ‘Dream In Extremis’, maar die is er dan weer plots zonder degelijk vloeiende overgang. Als besluit is er de ballade ‘Star’, nogal tranerig gezongen en met een ergerlijk vocoder echo op de stem soms voor een synthetisch effect. Dit album bevat goede momenten in de stijl van Threshold, Symphony X en Queensryche, maar is toch geen album waar ik de superlatieven voor van stal haal. De band gaat ook toeren waarbij tevens gitarist Mike Gilpin, toetsenist Andy Berry en bassist Chris Sharp van de partij zullen zijn.
