SHATTER MESSIAH: God Burns Like Flesh

Guitarist Curran Murphy who showed us his guitar skills in the past with Nevermore and Annihilator – you have to admit, true eminent bands – founded his own band Shatter Messiah in 2005 and the first album ‘Never To Play The Servant’ came out in August 2006. Since then bassist Ron Boisvert was replaced by Jason Chamberlain, but for the rest this Bay Area thrash collective still exists of the excellent singer Greg “Wags†Wagner, drummer Robert Falzano (another former Annihilator member) and guitarist Dusty Holt.
We learned from the past that so-called “superbands†not always guarantee a standout record, but this time we may speak of a kind of little masterpiece that I can recommend without diffidence to everyone who have a liking for bands like Metal Church and Nevermore, and in some measure Accept or Dio (way of singing). Energetic US power metal with lashings of thrash riffs, blessed with a modern production that gives the album a very dynamic sound.
Songs like ‘Idolator’ and ‘God Burns Like Flesh’ express pure power, without falling into common hack-and-chop stuff. Guitars are tuned properly low and vocals are dark and glorious, not shunning any dramatic feel. The third song is a hidden track which includes many high vocals, next to tight guitar runs. There is an opulence of fast, lively solos and hacking riffs; those solos have beautiful melodies and they know how to write fetching songs. Two of them have a length of seven minutes. That is why there is room for a semi-acoustic jazzy guitar interlude in ‘Buried In Black’. The bold, destructive ‘This Is The Day’ is next. Not venom but the finesse is in the tail with ‘God Burns Like Flesh’. A heavy beginning and a mauling end, but in between plucking acoustic guitars and emotive vocals rule. Vocalist Greg shows right here that he has a wonderful voice for slow, sensitive songs too. This song includes a vigorous eruption as well and a sure-fire guitar solo. I bet this will become their new metal anthem during gigs, sung along wholesale. To occlude I want to mention ‘Dirge Of The Christ’ with its blazing blastbeat-rhythm section. Inciting! This is a strong US metal record of top notch quality! Maybe not that original; but a pleasure to listen to. That’s sufficient.

Gitarist Curran Murphy die zijn gitaarkunsten in het verleden al mocht vertonen bij Nevermore en Annihilator – geef toe, niet de minsten – richtte in 2005 zijn eigen band op, Shatter Messiah, en een eerste album ‘Never To Play The Servant’ kwam uit in augustus 2006. Sindsdien is bassist Ron Boisvert vervangen door Jason Chamberlain, maar verder bestaat het Bay Area thrash collectief nog steeds uit de uitstekende zanger Greg “Wags†Wagner, drummer Robert Falzano (ook een vroegere loonslaaf van Annihilator) en gitarist Dusty Holt.
We leerden uit het verleden dat een zogenaamde “supergroep†geen garantie biedt voor een dijk van een plaat, maar ditmaal kunnen we toch van een klein meesterwerkje spreken dat ik zonder schroom kan aanraden aan iedereen die houdt van bands zoals Metal Church en Nevermore, en in lichtere mate Accept of Dio (manier van zingen). Stevige US power metal met heel veel thrash riffs die echter erg modern geproduceerd zijn, waardoor het album erg dynamisch klinkt.
Nummers als ‘Idolator’ en ‘God Burns Like Flesh’ stralen pure kracht uit, zonder te vervallen in banaal hakketakwerk. De gitaren zijn behoorlijk laaggestemd en de zang is donker en glorieus, waarbij men gevoel voor dramatiek niet uit de weg gaat. Het derde nummer is een ‘hidden track’ dat naast de strakke gitaren veel hoge zang bevat. Vinnige solo’s en hakkende riffs zijn er in overvloed, de solo’s hebben knappe melodieën en men weet pakkende nummers te schrijven. Twee van hen zijn zeven minuten lang. Daardoor is er in ‘Buried In Black’ plaats voor een semi-akoestisch jazzy gitaartussenstuk. Het kordate, destructieve ‘This Is The Day’ volgt. Niet het venijn maar de finesse zit ‘m in de staart bij ‘God Burns Like Flesh’. Een hard begin en een beukend einde, maar daartussen zwaaien tokkelende gitaren en emotionele zang de plak. Hier bewijst zanger Greg dat hij ook in gevoelige nummers een prachtstem heeft. Het nummer bevat ook een krachtige uitval en toffe gitaarsolo. Het wordt vast hun nieuw metal anthem tijdens concerten dat massaal zal worden meegezongen. Verder wil ik ook nog ‘Dirge Of The Christ’ vermelden met zijn blakende blastbeat-ritmesectie. Opzwepend! Dit is een sterke US metal plaat van hoge kwaliteit! Niet origineel, wel een plezier om te horen. Meer moet dat niet zijn.
