WOLFPACK UNLEASHED: Anthems Of Resistance

Wolfpack Unleashed is founded in 2005, but the prehistory of this band goes way back in time. Guitarist Wops Koch grew up in an Austria where mainly death and black metal bands throve. He saw things in a different way. In his collection one could find albums of Testament, Metallica and Megadeth. In 1995 he started his first thrash metal band. Since all proper thrash riffs had been written already, they used minor chords and melodies to give it a personal touch. We still hear that approach in Wolfpack Unleashed and guitar skills are the craftiest feature on ‘Anthems Of Resistance’.
That first thrash band of Koch split up long ago, but Wolfpack Unleashed was formed when Koch met drummer Daniel Haberl. It was a studio project in the beginning, but when second guitar player Karl Peininger engaged himself it became a proper band. Koch wanted a singer with a raucous voice and no scream-and-shout individual behind the mike and he found what he wanted in bassist Günther Wirth. This quartet wrote a couple of songs and released them on ‘The Art Of Resistance’ without label. With this proof of skilfulness they draw the attention of Napalm Records and these songs were released again on ‘Anthems Of Resistance’. Only new song is ‘Disgrace Erased’.
We hear solid, melodic thrash metal in Bay Area style, in which the guitar skills of Koch and Preininger are the summit. Vocals are unpolished and rough indeed, but they become monotonous when you listen to the entire album in one time. Vocals need some improvement on the next album. For the rest they serve us a pretty large sprinkling of decent songs, with the mid-paced ‘Next Victim’ and the hack-and-chop ‘Religion Of Control’ as personal favourites. This latest track can be found in two versions on my promo. The longer version includes any muezzin chants, since it is a protest against religious fanaticism. The lyrics deal with themes like extremism, anti-war songs, abuse and abortion and personal loss. Intelligent, technical thrash for fans of the above mentioned bands. But check out first if you like the vocals.

Wolfpack Unleashed is opgericht in 2005, maar de voorgeschiedenis van deze band gaat veel verder terug in de tijd. Gitarist Wops Koch groeide op in een Oostenrijk waar vooral death en black metal groepen actief waren. Dat zag hij anders. In zijn collectie bevond zich het werk van Testament, Metallica en Megadeth en in 1995 richtte hij een eerste thrash metal band op. Omdat alle patente thrash riffs volgens hem al geschreven waren, gebruikten ze akkoorden in mineur voor de persoonlijke toets. Dat horen we nu nog in Wolfpack Unleashed en het gitaarwerk is het sterkste punt van ‘Anthems Of Resistance’.

Koch wou een zanger met een ruwe stem en geen schreeuwend individu achter de microfoon en vond dit bij bassist Günther Wirth. Het viertal schreef een aantal nummers en gaf die uit in eigen beheer op ‘The Art Of Resistance’. Met deze proef van bekwaamheid in handen was Napalm Records geïnteresseerd en werden de nummers uitgebracht op ‘Anthems Of Resistance’. Alleen het nummer ‘Disgrace Erased’ is nieuw.
We horen stevige, melodieuze thrash metal naar Bay Area model waarin het gitaarwerk van Koch en Preininger met de ereprijs gaat lopen. De zang is inderdaad ongepolijst, maar gaat vervelen als je het hele album achter elkaar beluisterd. De zang is dan ook iets waar hopelijk aan gewerkt gaat worden op een tweede album. Verder weet men een aantal aardige nummers te brengen, waarvan het midtempo ‘Next Victim’ en het hakkende ‘Religion Of Control’ mijn favorieten zijn. Dit laatste nummer staat in twee versies op mijn exemplaar. De lange versie bevat nog muezzin gezangen want het is een aanklacht tegen religieus fanatisme. In die teksten behandelt men onderwerpen als extremisme, antioorlog, misbruik en abortus en persoonlijk verlies. ‘Eroica’ gaat zelfs over de laatste momenten van Beethoven. Intelligente, technische thrash voor fans van de bovenvermelde bands. Wel eerst checken of de zang je ding is.
