DE ARMA: Lost, Alien & Forlorn

This CD review nicely links up with my previous one about Fen’s ‘Dustwalker’. In 2011 De Arma released a split album with Fen. Completely in the vein of the split album ‘Towards The Shores To The End’, Swedish Andreas Pettersson (Lönndom) continues his atmospheric approach. For this debut album ‘Lost, Alien & Forlorn’ he engaged again Fen vocalist Frank Allain, while the line-up is completed with drummer Johan Marklund.
It means that ‘The Tower’ initially announces itself as the perfect marriage between The Cure and Soror Dolorosa, but gradually mainly unites the mysticism of Alcest with the deep-rooted melancholy of Katatonia into atmospheric post rock. During ‘Left To Hide’, Allain’s misery-laden voice is regaled with echoes from blackened screams. The step from atmospheric, otherworldly sounds to black metal is often taken, but it is really delightful in ‘Behind These Filthy Panes’. That is how the band manages to avoid the risk of sounding too shoegaze-like. The oppressive feeling of helplessness, followed by resignation and freedom is perfectly reproduced in the seven lengthy compositions. This is not only recommended to the dreamers on this planet… this is a strong debut that takes up the spirit of the age of the upcoming post rock

Deze CD bespreking sluit mooi aan met de vorige van Fen’s ‘Dustwalker’. In 2011 bracht De Arma immers een split-album uit met Fen. Geheel in de stijl van het split-album ‘Towards The Shores Of The End’ met Fen van twee jaar geleden, zet de Zweed Andreas Pettersson (Lönndom) zijn atmosferische koers verder. Voor het debuut-album ‘Lost, Alien & Forlorn’ engageerde hij weer eens Fen-zanger Frank Allain, terwijl de bezetting met drummer Johan Marklund gecompleteerd werd.
Dat betekent dat ‘The Tower’ zich aanvankelijk aankondigt als het perfecte huwelijk tussen The Cure en Soror Dolorosa, maar gaandeweg vooral de mystiek van Alcest met de diepgewortelde melancholie van Katatonia weet te verenigen tot atmosferische post rock. Tijdens ‘Left To Hide’ wordt Allain’s mistroostige stem aangezet met echo’s van zwartgeblakerd gekrijs. De stap van atmosferische, onwereldse klanken naar black metal wordt meermaals gezet, maar komt het best tot uiting in ‘Behind These Filthy Panes’. Daarmee omzeilt de band handig het gevaar om te navelstarend (yep, shoegaze) over te komen. Het beklemmende gevoel van machteloosheid, gevolgd door berusting en bevrijding wordt perfect weergegeven in de zeven lange composities. Niet alleen aangeraden voor de dromers op deze planeet… sterk debuut dat inhaakt op de tijdsgeest van opkomende post rock.
