NAILGUN: New World Chaos

This was a self-released album in 2012, yet it deserves our full attention in 2013 due to its high quality. Fans of Iced Earth, Nevermore and even Metallica will surely enjoy it. This means that the six-piece, hailing from South Germany, with two vocalists and two guitarists in their ranks, verges more to sturdy US metal than to applauded German (happy) power metal. A kind of rougher variant is always welcome.
Nailgun was founded in 2008 and leaped to the eye of several magazines with their self-released debut album ‘Paindustry’ in 2011. Right after that release, Nailgun already started working on material for this sophomore album ‘New World Chaos’. Consequently they could enter the Flatliners Studios in Ingolstadt early 2012 with producer Tom Müller at the helm. It turned into a recommended record, since the mix of thrash and classic heavy metal of these guys is done to a turn, with fetching choruses (‘Darkest Hour’, ‘Change Of Season’ and ‘Time Is Running Out’), loads of twin guitar solos with an opulence of charming melodies and varying vocals. Concerning these vocals: fortunately we are not dealing with the stereotype core-like roars contra emo chants; but they go for a more distinguished approach. The first Manuel brings in some clean, emotive vocals, the other Manuel sounds a bit rougher, that’s why we can compare him a bit with James Hetfield’s vocals.
Songs include proper groove-laden catchiness, acoustic interludes and they even add a kind of snappy, decadent touch to it in songs such as the hateful ‘I Have Enough’ or the tormented ‘Time Is Running Out’. Bay Area thrash influences prevail in the rather calm ‘Abyss Of Shadows’ and the dark ‘Deep Shadows Of Sorrow’. They swallow the bait with talk-box sounds in ‘The Result’ and above mentioned ‘Time Is Running Out’. As occluding track they serve us with the semi-ballad ‘You Are Everything’. Vocals might be too pompous here from time to time, but that is the only criticism we could mention about ‘New World Chaos’. This is proper metal that will appeal to every genuine metal fan! To be continued… that’s what we hope for!

Dit album werd in 2012 in eigen beheer uitgebracht, maar verdient toch onze aandacht in 2013 vanwege de hoge kwaliteit. Fans van Iced Earth, Nevermore en ook Metallica zullen hier namelijk een vette kluif aan hebben. Dit betekent dat dit zestal uit Zuid Duitsland, met twee zangers en twee gitaristen in de gelederen, het eerder zoekt in de ferme US metal dan de (happy) power metal waar Duitsland evenzeer befaamd voor is. Een beetje ruwere variant kan nooit kwaad.
In 2008 werd Nailgun opgericht en trok voor het eerst de aandacht van verschillende magazines met het in eigen beheer uitgebrachte debuutalbum ‘Paindustry’ in 2011. Vlak daarna begon Nailgun al te werken aan materiaal voor dit tweede album ‘New World Chaos’, zodat ze begin 2012 de Flatliners-studio in Ingolstadt konden betreden met producer Tom Müller achter de knoppen. Het is een aanrader geworden, want de mix van thrash en klassieke heavy metal van deze heren zit goed in elkaar, met sterke refreinen (‘Darkest Hour’, ‘Change Of Season’ en ‘Time Is Running Out’), heel veel twingitaarsolo’s vol charmante melodieën en gevarieerde zang. Wat die zang betreft: gelukkig hebben we hier niet met een brulparade contra emozang te maken, maar een gedistilleerde aanpak. De ene Manuel zorgt voor de geladen zang, de andere Manuel is wat ruwer in die optiek dat James Hetfield als voorbeeld mag vermeld worden.
De songs bevatten de nodige groove, ook akoestische intermezzo’s en men voegt zelfs een bitsig, decadent tintje toe in songs als het haatdragende ‘I Have Enough’ of het getormenteerde ‘Time Is Running Out’. Bay Area thrash invloeden vieren hoogtij in het kalme ‘Abyss Of Shadows’ en het donkere ‘Deep Shadows Of Sorrow’. Men swingt de pan uit door het gebruik van een talkbox in ‘The Result’ en bovenvernoemd ‘Time Is Running Out’ en levert als besluit nog de beladen semi-ballad ‘You Are Everything’ af. Daar klinkt de zang wel eens te gezwollen, maar dat is dan ook het enige puntje van kritiek dat we op ‘New World Chaos’ kunnen spuien. Stevige metal waar niemand een buil aan zal vallen is dit! Nog van dat!
