DGM: Momentum

DGM started out in 2004 as instrumental trio, but these days are gone since long. Fortunately there has come more stability in the line-up of this ingenious band from Rome last years. In guitarist Simone Mularoni they have recruited a superior musician, but he appears to be a famous studio wizard in the meantime as well. Consequently ‘Momentum’ was once more recorded, mixed and mastered by him (at the Domination Studios in San Marino) and absolutely sounds like the proverbial bell. The successor of the February 2009 released ‘Frame’ has a suitable title with ‘Momentum’: this is energetic music with enormous power, speed and virtuoso exposure. It is nothing but logical that Dream Theater and Symphony X are mostly mentioned as main influences for DGM.
‘Momentum’ is the eighth studio album and the second with vocalist Mark Basile. This man has still improved as singer. On ‘Frame’ he might have sounded a bit forced to compete against the overwhelming music, now he smoothly sounds powerful and when needed also sensitive and emotional. During the last years, the accomplished band could finally tour a bit more and in 2011 they hit the road with Symphony X (and they played at ProgPower EU). These contacts were rewarding. On the single and opening track ‘Reason’ we hear guest vocals from Russell Allen, together with Basile. They have shot a video clip for this song and it is a sturdy rocking track with fetching chorus. Heavy riffs and pummelling drums prevail in ‘Trust’, the with a classical intro starting ‘Universe’ and ‘Numb’, while we can enjoy amazing duels between guitarist Simone Mularoni and keyboardist Emanuele Casali in every song. By the way, both guys also play in Empyrios, while bassist Andrea Arcangeli is also active in Solisia and Evidence. It is obvious: these guys live for their music and you notice that in their magnificent skills when playing. In the middle of the album one can find a moment of calmness. The ballad ‘Repay’ is sung in a wonderful way, supported by classical piano, but later on there is a beautiful, emotive guitar solo too. In the fast hacking ‘Chaos’, guitar wizardry is even more, due to a guest appearance of Jorn Viggo Lofstad (Pagan’s Mind’). In ‘Remembrance’ and ‘Blame’ vocals are soothing and a bit melancholic, in contrast with the complex music. The intro of ‘Void’ offers us pompous drums before heavy riffs take over. The good thing is that DGM is able to regale its phenomenal wizardry with fetching melodies and emotions. Not every technical focused band is able to do that. But here we find ourselves in the circle of Italian prog masters, the ones we will soon welcome again at the PPM fest in Mons/Bergen (B).

In 2004 startte DGM als instrumentaal trio, maar die tijden liggen reeds lang achter ons. De laatste jaren is er gelukkig meer stabiliteit gekomen in de bezetting van deze virtuoze band uit Rome. In gitarist Simone Mularoni hebben zij een superieure muzikant die ook nog bekendheid geniet als studio wizard. ‘Momentum’ is dan ook naar goede gewoonte door hem opgenomen, gemixt en gemastered (in de Domination studio in San Marino) en klinkt als de spreekwoordelijke klok. De opvolger van het in februari 2009 uitgebrachte ‘Frame’ heeft zijn naam ‘Momentum’ goed gekozen: dit is energieke muziek met een enorme stuwkracht, vaart en virtuoos vertoon. Niet voor niets worden Dream Theater en Symphony X steeds als invloeden voor DGM vermeld.
‘Momentum’ is het achtste studioalbum en het tweede met zanger Mark Basile. De man heeft een flinke vooruitgang geboekt als zanger. Vond ik hem op ‘Frame’ soms wat geforceerd klinken om op te boksen tegen de overweldigende muziek, nu klinkt hij zonder moeite krachtig en indien nodig gevoelig en emotioneel. De voorbije jaren heeft de getalenteerde band eindelijk wat meer kunnen toeren en in 2011 gingen zij de baan op met Symphony X (en speelden toen ook op ProgPower EU). Deze contacten hebben hun vruchten afgeworpen. Op de single en openingstrack ‘Reason’ horen we gastvocalen van Russell Allen, samen met Basile. Voor dit nummer is ook al een videoclip gemaakt en het is een stevig rockende track die aanstekelijk is. Zware riffs en beukende drums weerklinken in ‘Trust’, het met een klassieke muziekintro aanvangende ‘Universe’ en ‘Numb’, terwijl we in elk nummer kunnen genieten van geweldige duels tussen gitarist Simone Mularoni en toetsenist Emanuele Casali. Beide heren maken trouwens ook het mooie weer in Empyrios, terwijl bassist Andrea Arcangeli ook actief is in Solisia en Evidence. Je merkt het: deze gasten leven voor de muziek en dat is dan ook te merken aan hun duizelingwekkend spel. In het midden van het album vinden we een rustpunt. De ballad ‘Repay’ wordt erg mooi gezongen, begeleid op klassieke piano, maar er is ook een erg gevoelige gitaarsolo. In het snel hakkende ‘Chaos’ wordt het gitaargeweld nog aangedikt door een gastbijdrage van Jorn Viggo Lofstad (Pagan’s Mind). In ‘Remembrance’ en ‘Blame’ is de zang verzachtend en ietwat weemoedig, in contrast met de complexe muziek. De intro van ‘Void’ biedt ons gewichtige tromslagen vooraleer het riffwerk weer overneemt. Het mooie is dat DGM zijn spetterend vertoon weet te verfraaien met pakkende melodieën en emoties. Dat is niet elke technisch voortvarende band gegeven. We bevinden ons hier dan ook in een kring van Italiaanse progmeesters die we spoedig weer zullen verwelkomen op het PPM fest in Mons/Bergen (B).
