RESONANCE ROOM: Untouchable Failure

I winded up my review of the Resonance Room debut album ‘Unspoken’ in 2009 with the words: “This is such a promising debut, that I expect to end up with ten points higher score for the next one.†Well, ten points more might be a bit exaggerating, but the band is in full development and has improved on more than one level, such as vocals and production. Since the very beginning, this Italian (from Sicily) band aimed for making dark gothic metal with progressive influences and that is exactly what they do on this fine sophomore album ‘Untouchable Failure’. Still influences of Katatonia, Pain Of Salvation, Riverside, Anathema and Porcupine Tree are noticeable all over, but also catchy gothic songs with dark low vocals are present.
These vocals of Alessandro Consoli have improved. He never sounds moping again and his accent does not lead so often to negative remarks anymore. Musically the band has always stood strong as a rock and we can enjoy this to the max again on ‘Untouchable Failure’. Just take the first track ‘The Great Insomnia’ as example. There’s a lot going on here. The psychedelic, greasy guitar sound reminds us of Katatonia, but then these are silenced, making place for heartfelt vocals and howling leads. An excited spoken intermezzo passes into hacking heaviness with scream-like sounds of guitars. And suddenly… calm piano with whisperings. Everything is drenched in despair and melancholy. Very beautiful, just like ‘Cages Of Dust’ that works with contrasts between tight guitars and quiescent piano fragments as well. Regularly outbursts cleave through this calmness. That’s how Resonance Room presents us a couple of sure-fire compositions.
And there is also the gothic division and here scores ‘New Life’, the capricious ‘Naivity And Oblivion’ and ‘Outside The Maze’ as charming triptych. The ballad moment is illustrated with ‘A Picture’. This is really sung in a wonderful way with hardly any instrument, although it goes in crescendo towards the end to a sensitive guitar solo. We have one more wild moment in ‘Unending Loss’ and then they smoothly occlude with the calm ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Faded’ (with spoken samplers) in which acoustic guitars pass into a powerful eruption, while it also includes a guitar solo from guest musician Antonio Condorelli. The core of four musicians got much help from keyboardist Marco Garro. With this very meritorious album, this band paves the way to international recognition. Anyway, that is what we really hope.

Ik beëindigde mijn bespreking van het Resonance Room debuutalbum ‘Unspoken’ in 2009 met de woorden: “Dit is zulk een veelbelovend debuut dat ik verwacht dat het tweede album nog tien punten meer gaat krijgen.†Tien punten meer is wat overdreven, maar de band is in volle ontwikkeling en heeft zich op bepaalde vlakken, zoals zang en productie, weten te verbeteren. Sinds het prille begin was het doel van deze band uit Italië (Sicilië) om dark gothic metal met progressieve invloeden te creëren en daar zijn ze op dit tweede album ‘Untouchable Failure’ weer met vlag en wimpel in geslaagd. Nog steeds gelden invloeden van Katatonia, Pain Of Salvation, Riverside, Anathema en Porcupine Tree, maar ook vlotte gothic songs met donkere stem gezongen passeren de revue.
De zang van Alessandro Consoli is erop vooruit gegaan. Hij klinkt nooit meer druilerig en ook zijn uitspraak verleidt me minder tot opmerkingen. Muzikaal stond de band altijd al sterk en daar kunnen we op ‘Untouchable Failure’ weer volop van genieten. Neem nu het eerste nummer ‘The Great Insomnia’. Daarin gebeurt al heel wat. Het weidse, gruizige gitaargeluid hebben ze van Katatonia, maar dan houdt men zich in voor de hartelijke zang met huilende leads. Een gejaagd gesproken intermezzo zwelt aan tot hakkende heftigheid met gierende klanken. En plots… ingetogen piano en bijna fluisterend. Alles is van wanhoop en weemoed doordrenkt. Erg mooi, net als ‘Cages Of Dust’ dat eveneens werkt met contrasten tussen strakke gitaren en een verstild pianofragment. Geregelde uitbarstingen doorklieven die kalmte. Zo weet Resonance Room een aantal sterke composities aan ons te presenteren.
Er is ook de gotische afdeling en daarin scoren ‘New Life’, het wispelturige ‘Naivety And Oblivion’ en ‘Outside The Maze’ als charmant drieluik. Het ballademoment wordt geïllustreerd door ‘A Picture’. Prachtig gezongen met amper instrumenten, al gaat men naar het einde toe in crescendo naar een gevoelige gitaarsolo. Nog even gaat het er wild aan toe in ‘Unending Loss’ en dan rondt men mooi af met het kalme ‘Prometheus’ en het met een gesproken sampler getooide ‘Faded’ dat tokkelende gitaren laat overgaan in een krachtige uitbarsting en tevens een gitaarsolo van gastmuzikant Antonio Condorelli bevat. De kern van vier muzikanten kreeg trouwens heel wat hulp van toetsenist Marco Garro. Men effent met dit heel verdienstelijke album de weg naar internationale erkenning. Althans dat hopen we van harte.
