Monster Magnet is an institute in psychedelic space rock. Or shall we call it powerful sleazy rock with ambiguous lyrics? Their classic items ‘Dopes To Infinity’ and ‘Powerslave’ are engraved in my memory as granite images and the gig I attended in the Netherlands (013) around that time was pure magic. We met guitarist Ed Mundell from time to time at stonerrock gigs in Belgium. Wasn’t Monster Magnet the inventor or this style anyway?
It touched me when I read that Dave Wyndorf suffered of an overdose of sleeping pills, being at the edge of eternity during an European tour. Dave realized he had to recover and he does not hide that his co-musicians were doing a great job when recording this new album. They supported him during this hard time, helping him making this new album. ‘4-Way Diablo’ is the result and I am happy to say that we can look forward to Magnet’s future with regained confidence.
Of course ‘4-Way Diablo’ bears the traces of this captivating incident in Wyndorf’s life. In songs like ‘I’m Calling You’ (dark ballad with piano), ‘Blow Your Mind’ (sung in a very sensitive way, favourite song of mine!) and ‘Little Bag Of Gloom’ (a reflection on this hard time) we get some kind of view on Wyndorf’s diary where he gets rid of his demons.
Fans of the ‘Dopes To Infinity’ era may find their liking in slightly psychedelic stuff as ‘Solid Gold’, the instrumental ‘Freeze And Pixelate’ or my favourite one of that style ‘A Thousand Stars’, adopting strength from the functional use of percussion. Let us not forget the cover of ‘2000 Lightyears From Home’ (Rolling Stones) in this respect: it could have been written for Monster Magnet itself. Finally we are graced with a couple of straight forward rock songs that have an instant impact. In brief: Monster Magnet is back and I am glad about it! The band will tour not that much anymore, but will focus on producing more music (a solo album of Wyndorf is in the making) but if this is a matter of life or dead I can only applaud this.

Monster Manet is een instituut in de psychedelische space rock. Of zullen we het lekkere vuige rock met dubbelzinnige teksten noemen? Hun klassiekers ‘Dopes To Infinity’ en ‘Powerslave’ staan als granieten beelden in mijn geheugen gegraveerd en het concert dat ik in Nederland (013) bijwoonde omstreeks die tijd was pure magie. Gitarist Ed Mundell kwam men wel eens tegen in Belgenland tijdens concerten in het stonerrock genre. Waren de mannen van Monster Magnet immers niet de peetvaders van dit genre?
Het trof me dan ook toen ik op een bepaald moment las dat Dave Wyndorf op het randje van de eeuwigheid zweefde na een overdosis slaappillen, in het midden van een Europese tournee. Dave besefte dat hij zich moest herpakken en steekt bij deze nieuwe release niet onder stoelen of banken dat zijn muzikanten alle eer toekomt. Zij stonden hem bij om de uiterst moeilijke periode door te komen en een nieuw album in te blikken. ‘4-Way Diablo’ is het resultaat en we kunnen de Magnet toekomst gelukkig terug weer met een beetje vreugde tegemoet zien.
Natuurlijk draagt ‘4-Way Diablo’ de sporen van dit ingrijpende incident in Wyndorf’s leven. In nummers als ‘I’m Calling You’ (donkere ballade met piano), ‘Blow Your Mind’ (erg sensueel gezongen, een favoriet nummer!) en ‘Little Bag Of Gloom’ (een reflectie op de moeilijke periode) krijgen we inzage in het Wyndorf dagboek waar hij alles van zich afschrijft.
Liefhebbers van de ‘Dopes To Infinity’ periode kunnen dan weer hun gading vinden in licht psychedelische werkjes als ‘Solid Gold’, het instrumentale ‘Freeze And Pixelate’ of mijn favoriet ‘A Thousand Stars’ dat veel sterkte ontleent aan zijn functionele gebruik van percussie. Laten we hierbij de cover van ‘2000 Lightyears From Home’ niet over het hoofd zien: deze Rolling Stones compositie is Monster Magnet op het lijf geschreven. Tenslotte zijn er ook nog een aantal reguliere rechttoe rechtaan rocksongs die recht naar het kruis tasten. Kortom: Monster Magnet is terug en daar ben ik blij om! De band zal minder toeren en zich meer concentreren op muziek produceren (een soloalbum van Wyndorf is in de maak) maar als dit een kwestie van leven of dood is heb ik daar alle respect voor.
