MICHELLE DARKNESS: Brand New Drug

End Of Green is a band who fascinated me since the very beginning: their debut ‘Infinity’. Their dark, melancholic music with euphonious guitar layers and catchy choruses is enjoyable at every time of the day. The two live gigs I saw of them at Summer Breeze remain moments to remember. Maybe you remember their single ‘Dead End Hero’ of 2005? But okay, the vocalist of this German band, Michelle Darkness has made a solo album now, and it will be launched at the world as ‘Brand New Drug’.
While the rest of the band spent time on finishing a new End Of Green album, Michelle isolated himself to concentrate on songs he wanted to release solo. He plays all the instruments and initially recorded everything at his own homestudio. It is a direct hit from the very outset: male gothic rock I just love to hear. ‘My Sweet’ settles me in the domain of Lacrimas Profundere and Finnish gothic bands like Entwine, HIM, The 69 Eyes and even Sentenced. Michelle has a soft spot for the land of a thousand lakes – just like me – and he was glad to record ‘Brand New Drug’ at the Sonic Pump Studios (Helsinki) with Nino Laurenne as producer, while mastering took place at Finnvox.
One may find catchy, fetching songs such as ‘Brand New Drug’ and ‘Darklandcity’, but ‘Dopecrawler’ and ‘Raging Fire’ have heavier guitars to counter. Michelle sings extremely low on this album! He sounds like Peter Steele! Of course Sisters Of Mercy is another point of reference. Only the heavy ‘Shine On’ has a kind of resemblance with his main band vocal-wise. Beside a number of charming self-written songs, Darkness recorded three coversongs. ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ (of Joy Division) is a duet with Hanna Pakarinen. If you do not know this woman, she is the winner of the Finnish ‘Idols’ TV show. ‘Pet Semetary’ is a Ramones classic, but ‘The Sound Of Silence’ (of Simon & Garfunkel) is the most remarkable cover. Funny to hear it sung that low and dark. He added a magnificent guitar solo. In the last track ‘Forgotten Sun’ (once again a stunner!) Darkness was assisted by Christian Hector, of Midnattsol and AHAB fame. When you buy the limited version, you will hear Mika Tauriainen of Entwine in ‘Hatethings’. ‘Brand New Drug’ is a successful weekend trip to Finland of Michelle and I am sure he got to know many friends there!

End Of Green is een band die ik volg sinds het prille begin: hun debuutalbum ‘Infinity’. Hun donkere, melancholieke muziek met fraai gitaarwerk en catchy refreinen kan ik op elk moment van de dag horen. De twee concerten die ik van hen zag op Summer Breeze waren memorabele momenten. Misschien herinnert u zich nog de single ‘Dead End Hero’ uit 2005? Maar goed, de zanger van deze Duitse band Michelle Darkness heeft nu een soloplaat gemaakt en laat deze op u los als ‘Brand New Drug’.
Terwijl de rest van de band tijd besteedden aan de afwerking van een volgend End Of Green album, zonderde Michelle zich af om zich te concentreren op nummers die hij alleen ging uitwerken. Hij bespeelt hier dan ook alle instrumenten en nam om te beginnen alles op in zijn thuisstudio. Het is meteen genieten geblazen: mannelijke gothic rock zoals ik het graag hoor. ‘My Sweet’ doet me neerstrijken in het rijk van Lacrimas Profundere en Finse gothic bands als Entwine, HIM, The 69 Eyes en zelfs Sentenced. Michelle heeft dan ook – net als ik – een zwak voor het land van de duizend meren en was maar wat blij toen hij ‘Brand New Drug’ kon laten produceren door Nino Laurenne in de Sonic Pump Studios (Helsinki) en masteren in Finnvox.
Toegankelijke vlotte nummers vinden we in ‘Brand New Drug’ en ‘Darklandcity’, maar ‘Dopecrawler’ en ‘Raging Fire’ hebben wat zwaardere gitaren als tegenwicht. Maar wat zingt Michelle laag op dit album! Hij lijkt wel Peter Steele! Natuurlijk kunnen we ook weer Sisters Of Mercy als referentiepunt aangeven. Enkel het heavy ‘Shine On’ gaat een beetje in de richting van zijn hoofdband qua zang. Naast een aantal pakkende eigen songs nam Darkness ook nog drie covers op. ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ (van Joy Division) is een duet met Hanna Pakarinen. Mocht u de dame niet kennen, zij is de winnares van de Finse ‘Idols’ TV show. ‘Pet Semetary’ is een Ramones klassieker, maar ‘The Sound Of Silence’ (van Simon & Garfunkel) is de meest opmerkelijke cover. Grappig om dit zo laag en donker gezongen te horen. Er is wel een prachtige gitaarsolo aan toegevoegd. In het laatste nummer ‘Forgotten Sun’ (prachtig!) krijgt Darkness assistentie van Christian Hector, die we kennen van Midnattsol en AHAB. En koop je de gelimiteerde versie, dan hoor je in ‘Hatethings’ ook nog Mika Tauriainen van Entwine. ‘Brand New Drug’ zie ik als een geslaagde weekendtrip naar Finland van Michelle waar hij vast veel vrienden gemaakt heeft!
