CORTEZ: Thunder In A Forgotten Town

Cortez is a band from Boston that is made up of musicians that had started off in other Stoner, Rock and Punk bands. They claim to have created a sound that’s bigger, heavier and harder than what they all had done in their previous bands.
They based the name of their band on Neil Young’s song “Cortez the Killer†and they do a mediocre imitation of the ZZ Top sound. Their intention is to play no-nonsense doomy, stoner-metal that sounds like ZZ Top. I think that the bar has been set a bit too high.
I must admit that I was charmed after having listened to their concept sound. Nut after a few more intensive listening sessions, I can only conclude that, as a whole, there’s just not enough power to withstand the test of time. It’s a good attempt, but there’s too much of the same and not enough of what’s actually necessary.

Cortez is afkomstig uit Boston en werd opgericht door een samenraapsel van muzikanten uit allerlei Stoner en Rock ‘n Punk bands. Uit de ervaring die de bandleden opdeden in hun vorige formaties beweren ze een sound te hebben gedestilleerd die groter, harder en zwaarder klinkt dan alles wat ze tot nog toe gedaan hadden.
Na hun naam te hebben ontleend aan het nummer ‘Cortez The Killer’ van Neil Young, hebben ze ook nog een flauw afkooksel geleend van de sound van ZZ Top. De bedoeling van de band is om recht voor je raap doomy stoner-metal te spelen, die dan ook in één adem met laatst genoemde band zou worden uitgesproken. Ik denk dat dit toch wat hoog gegrepen is.
Ik moet toegeven dat ik na een eerste beluistering van deze promo gecharmeerd was door hun conceptgeluid. Doch na enkele malen intenser geluisterd te hebben kan ik niet anders dan vaststellen dat het geheel toch iets te weinig om het lijf heeft om de tand des tijd te kunnen weerstaan. Goede poging maar teveel van hetzelfde en te weinig van dat wat nodig is!
