MANEGARM: Legions Of The North

Four musicians look us in the eyes at the promo picture… quite some things have changed in Swedish pagan outfit Månegarm since we reviewed their previous album ’Nattväsen’ in 2009. Since then we have seen the band a couple of times live, but now they appear to be part of the ever growing Napalm Records family. And that is not all. It is more far-reaching for their sound that violinist Janne Liljeqvist – older than the rest of the band, but the most active band mop of hair on stage – has left the band right before the recordings of this seventh studio album ‘Legions Of The North’. Now they have worked with a session musician, thus we can hear violins, but not that much. Another groundbreaking change: bassist Pierre, responsible for all the (Swedish) lyrics, has been abandoned from the band.
Enough facts and figures, we are on the tiptoe of expectations to find out about these new developments in MÃ¥negarm, lastly a band that has been around since 1995 and can measure its strength against echelons such as Thyrfing and Einherjer. Vocalist Erik has written the lyrics now and he prefers to express himself in English language. Naturally that makes it more accessible for most of the Europeans. In addition the songs are also more catchy and fetching, with choruses that invite you to sing along and create a glorious Viking atmosphere. This is a stunner, one we would like to compare with bands like Amon Amarth and Ensiferum, rather than being linked to underground bands.
‘Arise’ can be taken literally as intro with compelling cadenza. However, with ‘Legions Of The North’ they take us by storm as proper ferocious Vikings. What a blast! Månegarm really bulldozers us with fast and furious black metal, regaled with raucous screams, but on the other hand sturdy clean Viking chants as well. The melodious folk melodies of the guitars truly wade through this heaviness, during the overwhelming ‘Eternity Awaits’ with any violins in the back too. That violin only gets seventeen seconds of sole glory during ‘Helvegr’, followed by the galloping rhythms of the raging, with dark storytelling voice sung ‘Hordes Of Hel’. One can hear a lot of clean stalwart vocals here, without destroying the general bellicose approach. Fervent black metal and a well-placed scream herald ‘Tor Hjälpe’, later regaled with a beautiful, calm intermezzo that accentuates the surrounding savageness. It is rather seldom that ‘oh oh oh’ chants do not sound banal at all. Here they don’t! For a moment they take an acoustic guitar in ‘Vigverk’, continuing with the ultimately infectious ‘Sons Of War’ and ‘Echoes From The Past’ (with catchy riffs). The latter one is graced with incidentally female vocals, but furthermore this can be considered as a proper Amon Amarth song. Fire-like and stamping ‘Fallen’ falls on our empty stomach, to ogle openly to a support spot of Amon Amarth during the stunner ‘Forged In Fire’. However, this is not done without inserting an atmospheric folk part and necessary input of their own. Damned, this band has suddenly matured and grown! As fine epilogue we have the melancholic ‘Raadh’ with beautiful female vocals contra clean male chants. This is, without any doubt, the best album ever of Månegarm. We truly hope that they will finally break through with it to a larger audience, even if they are nearly twenty years in the running. Kris Verwimp has created (again) the artwork, depicting the end battle of Ragnarök. Grandioso!

Vier muzikanten kijken ons aan van op de promofoto… er is heel wat veranderd bij het Zweedse pagan gezelschap Månegarm sinds we het vorige album ’Nattväsen’ bespraken in 2009. Weliswaar zagen we de band sindsdien nog enkele keren live, maar zij blijken nu ook deel uit te maken van de grote Napalm Records familie die alsmaar uitbreidt. Dat is niet alles. Ingrijpender is dat violist Janne Liljeqvist – toch altijd wat ouder dan de anderen, maar op het podium de meest actieve ragebol – de band verlaten heeft vlak voor de opnamen van dit zevende studioalbum ‘Legions Of The North’. Men heeft nu met een sessiemuzikant gewerkt, dus is er nog viool te horen, maar niet veel. Een andere grondverschuiving: bassist Pierre, verantwoordelijk voor alle (Zweedse) teksten, is de band uitgezet.
Genoeg feiten om razend benieuwd te zijn naar de nieuwe ontwikkelingen binnen MÃ¥negarm, een band die toch al sinds 1995 meegaat en zich kan meten met echelons als Thyrfing en Einherjer. Zanger Erik heeft nu de teksten geschreven en hij wenst zich uit te drukken in de Engelse taal. Dat maakt het voor Europeanen natuurlijk toegankelijker. Dat niet alleen: de songs zijn ook heel wat meer aanstekelijk geworden, met refreinen die aanzetten tot meebrullen en een glorieuze Vikingsfeer etaleren. Dit is een knaller, waarbij we eerder vergelijkingen met Amon Amarth en Ensiferum zouden willen trekken dan met bands uit de underground.
‘Arise’ mag als intro met een meeslepende cadans letterlijk genomen worden. Maar met ‘Legions Of The North’ valt men denderend de kamer binnen als woeste Vikingen. Nou, die zit. Månegarm stormt met snelle black metal over ons heen, zich daarbij bedienend van ruwe screams, maar ook heldere Vikingkoren. De melodieuze folk melodieën van de gitaren waden er als het ware doorheen, ook in het overdonderende ‘Eternity Awaits’ waarin we viool horen. Die krijgt och arme zeventien seconden het rijk voor zich in ‘Helvegr’ om dan in galop te vervolgen met het raggende en met duistere, verhalende stem gezongen ‘Hordes Of Hel’. Hier komt ook veel cleane stoere zang in, zonder dat ie afbreuk doet aan de heftigheid. Felle black metal en een goedgeplaatste kreet kondigen ‘Tor Hjälpe’ aan, waarin een mooi, kalm intermezzo de omringende woestheid accentueert. Zelden klonken ‘oh oh oh’ gezangen zo weinig banaal. Even wordt in ‘Vigverk’ de akoestische gitaar boven gehaald om dan uit te pakken met het bijzonder aanstekelijke ‘Sons Of War’ en het van pakkende riffs voorziene ‘Echoes From The Past’, waarin we heel even vrouwelijke zang horen, maar voor de rest kan dit een song van Amon Amarth zijn. Vlammend en stotend valt ‘Fallen’ op onze nuchtere maag, om met ‘Forged In Fire’ weer helemaal naar het voorprogramma van Amon Amarth te lonken. Dit echter niet zonder een sfeervolle folk passage en de nodige eigenheid. Verdorie, wat is deze band ineens gegroeid! Als orgelpunt is er nog het weemoedige ‘Raadh’ met mooie vrouwenzang en heldere cleane mannenzang. Dit is zonder twijfel het beste album dat Månegarm ooit maakte en we hopen dat zij hier alsnog hun grote doorbraak mee kennen, ook al zijn ze bijna twintig jaar bezig. Kris Verwimp tekende (wederom) voor het artwork, dat de eindstrijd Ragnarök voorstelt. Grandioso!
