POWERWOLF: Preachers Of The Night

We are glad to notice that Powerwolf’s victorious march and advance cannot be stopped! We still remember our first encounter with the band at Summer Breeze 2005 at noon in the blazing sun. Yet these five musicians instantly drew our attention, not only due to their fetching power metal, but also because of their Romanian vocalist/ceremony master Attila Dorn and their unbridled enthusiasm. Their entrance in the scène spread like a wildfire and the next years we witnessed a packed to the gunnels tent at night at the same festival and crowds going crazy. Last year Powerwolf left attendees of PPM fest and Graspop in Belgium in awe, a situation that reminded us of the triumphs of Sabaton. Powerwolf can be pigeonholed in more or less the same musical spectrum, but they present a very strong identity of their own.
This success story will be prolonged with the release of ‘Preachers Of The Night’, there is no doubt about it. Their fifth studio album is the debut for new label Napalm Records. From the stunner ‘Amen & Attack’ on as tempestuous “Ohrwurm†there is a feeling of familiar sounds, but their approach is fresh without copying themselves. Their fast and furious neoclassical power metal still shows little influences of their main inspiration Iron Maiden in ‘Secrets Of The Sacristy’, but when catchy hymns like ‘Coleus Sanctus’ or the inciting ‘Sacred & Wild’ blow our speakers, it is mainly their heavier approach that leaps to the eye, with pulverizing double bass drum attacks from Roel van Helden. Sturdy choirs increase the bombast, while Matthew Greywolf dashes off an opulence of melodic guitar solos. Another feature from the band, the solemn church organ, comes in the front during the rough stamping ‘Kreuzfeuer’.
Still their hilarious lyrics are brought with a sense of humour, but as concept we have a critical note about the tragedies, caused by the crusades in the Dark Ages. That is very obvious in ‘In The Name Of God (Deus Vult)’, while the consecrating chants of master of ceremony Attila Dorn in ‘Nochoi Dozor’ soon pass into massive choirs. The compact songs invite you to sing along and I am sure this will happen during the upcoming Wolfsnächte tour that will cover the entire European continent in the fall. The occluding track ‘Last Of The Living Dead’ is the only one with a more epic feel; with howling wolves, a church bell and the majestic sound of organ. Attila illustrates his past as opera singer with very pompous chants and the duel between guitars and keyboards is overwhelming. Powerwolf never sounded that heavy and fast before! This album is made for playing live, regaled with their diverting, impressive show! That will expand their fan base again. The special edition – as usual the artwork is created by Matthew Greywolf and nothing but magnificent – includes some covers of Black Sabbath and Judas Priest and orchestral versions of four own compositions.

We zijn verheugd te merken dat de opmars van Powerwolf niet te stuiten is! We herinneren ons nog de eerste kennismaking met de band op Summer Breeze 2005 onder een blakende middagzon. Toch trokken de vijf muzikanten al meteen de aandacht: niet alleen door hun aanstekelijke power metal, maar ook door hun Roemeense zanger/ceremoniemeester Attila Dorn en een tomeloze inzet. Hun komst in de scène verspreidde zich als een lopend vuurtje en de volgende jaren noteerden we een tot de nok gevulde tent ’s avonds op datzelfde festival en wilde taferelen. Vorig jaar bezorgde Powerwolf festivalgangers op PPM fest en Graspop in België een aha-erlebnis die we enkel konden vergelijken met de triomfen van Sabaton. Powerwolf bevindt zich trouwens ongeveer in hetzelfde muzikale spectrum, maar presenteert zich met een sterke eigen identiteit.
Dit succesverhaal zal moeiteloos geprolongeerd worden met het uitbrengen van ‘Preachers Of The Night’, hun vijfde studioalbum dat het debuut is voor broodheer Napalm Records. Vanaf de knaller ‘Amen & Attack’ als binnenstormende oorworm is er een gevoel van herkenning, maar ook blijft een frisse aanpak zonder zichzelf te kopiëren. De snelle neoklassieke power metal toont in ‘Secrets Of The Sacristy’ nog wat invloeden van grote voorbeeld Iron Maiden, maar wanneer aanstekelijke hymnen als ‘Coleus Sanctus’ of het ophitsende ‘Sacred & Wild’ de kamer in denderen, valt vooral de hardere koers op die de band vaart, met felle dubbelbasdrums van Roel van Helden. Kloeke koorzang scherpt de bombast aan, terwijl Matthew Greywolf de ene na de andere melodieuze gitaarsolo uit zijn mouw schudt. Een ander kenmerk van de band, het plechtstatige kerkorgel komt op de voorgrond in het ruw stampende ‘Kreuzfeuer’.
Nog steeds worden de hilarische teksten met gevoel voor humor gebracht, maar als concept is er wel een kritische noot over de tragedies die de middeleeuwse kruistochten veroorzaakt hebben. Dat komt vooral tot uiting in ‘In The Name Of God (Deus Vult)’, terwijl de zegenende zang van ceremoniemeester Attila Dorn in ‘Nochoi Dozor’ al vlug de mond gesnoerd wordt door sterke koorzang. De compacte songs nodigen uit tot meezingen en dat zal dan ook massaal gebeuren tijdens de nieuwe Wolfsnachten tour die Powerwolf in de herfst doorheen heel Europa brengt. De afsluiter ‘Last Of The Living Dead’ is als enige wat meer episch met zijn sfeerschepping met huilende wolven, een kerkklok en het magistrale geluid van kerkorgel. Attila laat zijn verleden als operazanger gelden door extra gewichtig te zingen en het duel tussen gitaren en keyboards is heftig. Nooit klonk Powerwolf zo snel en hard! Dit album is gemaakt om live te brengen, aangedikt door hun vermakelijke, imposante show! Dat zal hen vast nog veel meer fans opleveren. De speciale editie – zoals steeds is het artwork door gitarist Matthew Greywolf gemaakt en indrukwekkend – bevat nog enkele covers (van Black Sabbath en Judas Priest) en orkestrale versies van vier eigen songs.
