THRUDVANGAR: Tiwaz

Thrudvangar belongs to the more raucous representatives from the German Viking metal scène. Without any ornaments (read: folk instruments), they bring their heathen message to the crowds since 2001 and they do that in a meritorious way. ‘Tiwaz’ happens to be their fifth studio album and the successor of the conceptual ‘Durch Blut Und Eis’ released in 2010. Since that time the keyboardist left the band (in 2012) and this year they added a new second guitarist. In that respect there is more focus on guitar skills. That results in, in addition to some necessary heaviness, loads of beautiful acoustic passages. This is the only element one might call a bit folk-like.
Furthermore this is surely Viking metal, but with melodic death metal overtones and only from time to time a shadow of blackened fury. Thus more Amon Amarth than Thyrfing, to name only a few. The title track has that vague blackened touch, but at the same time it is also mid-paced and epic and graced with nice acoustic interludes. ‘Sonnenwende’ is much faster, with low-pitched thundering vocals of singer Matthias Träbert. Many excellent guitar solos come our way in most of the tracks. ‘Der Letzte Weg’ starts calm with solemn spoken part, followed by riffs with momentum for a proper dynamic feel, finally ending acoustically again.
The use of German language adds a gruff and grim zest to the whole thing, although the songs have catchiness and turn out inciting as well. The beginning of ‘Brüder’ might even fit within a doom band, while the clean, melancholic vocals in ‘Heimat’ appear to be another extra. After the merciless heavy ‘Schicksal’ we can hear any melancholy in ‘Abschied’ (in accordance with its title) and they shift from fast to slower parts in a proper manner. This is an album that will appeal to a broad range of Viking brothers (and sisters). And it is a well-deserved step from Einheit to the bigger Massacre label.

Thrudvangar behoort tot de ruwere telgen van het Duitse Viking metal genre. Zonder toeters of bellen (lees: folk instrumenten) brengen zij hun heidense pagan boodschap aan de man sinds 2001 en ze doen dat zeer verdienstelijk. ‘Tiwaz’ is het vijfde studioalbum en de opvolger van het conceptuele ‘Durch Blut Und Eis’ uit 2010. Sinds die tijd is de toetsenist verdwenen uit de band (in 2012) en voegde men dit jaar een tweede gitarist toe. In die optiek komt er meer nadruk op het gitaarwerk te liggen. Dat vertaalt zich, naast de spreekwoordelijke heftigheid, in veel mooie akoestische passages. Deze vormen dan ook het enige element dat men folk gericht zou kunnen noemen.
Verder is dit ontegensprekelijk Viking metal, maar wel met een melodieus death metal sausje en slechts hier en daar een zweempje black. Meer Amon Amarth dan Thyrfing dus, om maar iets te noemen. Het titelnummer heeft die vage zwartgeblakerde glans, maar is ook mid-tempo en episch, zeker na de fraaie akoestische passages. ‘Sonnenwende’ jaagt zich erdoor met een lage donderstem van zanger Matthias Träbert, maar ook uitstekende solo’s komen ons ’s weegs in de meeste tracks. ‘Der Letzte Weg’ vangt slepend aan met plechtig gesproken passage, waarna stuwende riffs veel dynamiek geven tot men weer akoestisch eindigt.
Het gebruik van de Duitse taal maakt het geheel voldoende bars en grimmig, hoewel de songs zeker toegankelijk en opzwepend zijn. Het begin van ‘Brüder’ kan men zelfs aan een doom band voorschotelen en de cleane, weemoedige zang vormt dan weer de surplus tijdens ‘Heimat’. Na het meedogenloos harde ‘Schicksal’ horen we in afsluiter ‘Abschied’ – in overeenkomst met de titel – enige weemoed, waarbij kalmere en snelle passages zich op een boeiende wijze afwisselen. Dit is een album dat een brede schare Viking broeders (en zusters) zal aanspreken. Een verdiende overstap ook van Einheit naar het grotere Massacre Records.
