END OF GREEN: The Painstream

Finally justice for our German friends, being around since 1992, but they hardly tour outside Germany. Fortunately I saw them live at Summer Breeze a couple of times, since they are regular guests over there. At last End Of Green happens to be signed by a bigger label (Napalm) and this is their eighth studio album ‘The Painstream’ that will be released on the twenty third of August in the Benelux. They play infectious gothic rock with an alternative tinge. Bands like Paradise Lost, Bush and Lacrimas Profundere might be a hint for their sound. All this is regaled with very depressive lyrics and that is a huge contrast with the music where we always get well-tempered from.
In that respect, nothing has changed on ‘The Painstream’ and we do not need any changes, since the five-piece with vocalist Michelle Darkness (yes, it is a man) and guitarist Sad Sir (red beard and long dreadlocks) as main eye-catchers has written eleven accessible rocking tracks again in 2013. The entire album was recorded by producer Corni Bartels at the Weltraum Studios once more and Darkness’ voice still sounds as deep as Peter Steele from time to time. With dynamic guitars and characteristic drums patterns, opener ‘Hangman’s Joke’ appears to be catchy rock with slightly distorted, juicy vocals. Well, we have a couple of those up-tempo rockers with excellent guitar work and low-pitched vocals. The dynamic ‘Stand Alone’, the catchy sing along tune ‘De(ad)generation’ that we can describe as contemporary new wave or the haunting ‘Chasing Ghosts’ all belong in this category.
But there are also lots of moments when they slacken down pace and sensitive vocals sound a bit decadent and sensual. Therefore you can listen to ‘Final Resistance’ which slowly sneaks under your skin or ‘Home On Fire’ (with fine repetitive guitar notes). The band comes up with the term goth ‘n blues for the beautiful ‘Death Of The Weakender’. It is sung with a broken voice and it has the sadness of blues within. Grief, sadness and despair all over in the lyrics, since End Of Green’s trademarks have been jet black, depressive reveries for ages. This leads to captivating beauty again in ‘Miss Misery’. If we can speak of a small sidestep from their idiosyncratic sound, music-wise, it should be the latest track ‘The Painstreet’. Call it postrock, call it alternative rock or call it whatever you want… it is an undeniable fact that End Of Green charms from the beginning till the end with its fetching music that makes you rock in summer and fall into contemplation during winter time.

Gerechtigheid voor onze Duitse vrienden die al sinds 1992 bezig zijn, maar buiten Duitsland amper toeren. Gelukkig heb ik ze wel een aantal keren live gezien op Summer Breeze, want daar is de band uit Stuttgart kind aan huis. End Of Green is eindelijk getekend door een groter label (Napalm) en dit voor hun achtste studioalbum ‘The Painstream’ dat uitkomt op 23 augustus in de Benelux. Ze spelen aanstekelijke gothic rock met een alternatief tintje, waarbij namen als Paradise Lost, Bush en Lacrimas Profundere een hint mogen wezen. Dit alles met erg depressieve teksten, al staat dit in schril contrast met de vinnige rock waar we altijd goedgemutst van worden.
In die optiek is er weinig veranderd op ‘The Painstream’ en dat hoeft ook niet, want het vijftal met zanger Michelle Darkness (jawel, een man hoor) en gitarist Sad Sir (rode baard en lange dreadlocks) als voornaamste blikvangers heeft ook anno 2013 elf toegankelijk rockende tracks geschreven. Het geheel werd wederom opgenomen door producer Corni Bartels in de Weltraum Studio en Darkness klinkt nog steeds soms even diep als Peter Steele. Met wervelende gitaren en kenmerkende drumaccenten is ‘Hangman’s Joke’ vlotte rock met ietwat vervormde, smeuïge zangpartijen. We hebben wel meer van dit uptempo rockers met excellent gitaarwerk en lage zang. Het dynamische ‘Stand Alone’, de catchy meezinger ‘De(ad)generation’ die men als hedendaagse new wave zou kunnen omschrijven of het jachtige ‘Chasing Ghosts’ vallen allemaal in deze categorie.
Er zijn echter ook tal van momenten wanneer men het tempo verlaagd en gevoelige zang decadent en sensueel klinkt. Luister daarvoor naar ‘Final Resistance’ dat zich sluipend onder je huid nestelt of het met fraaie lillende gitaren opgesmukte ‘Home On Fire’. De band heeft de term goth ’n blues bedacht voor het mooie ‘Death Of The Weakender’ dat met gebroken stem vertolkt wordt en de droefheid van blues in zich draagt. Smart, droefheid en wanhoop is er trouwens genoeg in de teksten, want End Of Green heeft al jaren een patent op gitzwarte, depressieve uitlatingen. Dat leidt in ‘Miss Misery’ eens te meer tot erg mooie momenten. Als er dan al sprake is van een klein zijstapje, muzikaal, dan is het in de laatste track ‘The Painstreet’. Noem het postrock, noem het alternatieve rock of noem het om het even wat… feit is dat End Of Green weer van begin tot einde weet te boeien met zijn aanstekelijke muziek die je in de zomer doet rocken en in de winter tot mijmeringen aanzet.
