MAEL MORDHA: Damned When Dead

It has been three years since predecessor ’Manannán’ came out, but it does not mean that the savage warriors of Irish Mael Mordha rested on their laurels. The authentic Irish band executed its flamboyant show in Europe and the US on several festival stages. And in the meantime they worked on a new album. ‘Damned When Dead’ – the fourth studio album – was recorded as four-piece after the departure of guitarist Anthony Lindsay, but the skilful production of Chris Fielding (Winterfylleth, Primordial) at the Foel Studios in Wales brings out the best of the band. We enter the barricades for eight new songs full of bravura; Gaelic doom metal is the name!
A fine example of ethnic extravaganza comes out of the speakers at the beginning of ‘Laudabiliter’, since captivating chants fly above riffs with momentum. But naturally the Mael Mordha sound is again featured by the elocutionary chants of front man Roibeard O Bogail, with epic pompousness, solemn spoken fragment and a cheerful flute (ah… that famous tin whistle) that adds sweet sounds to the melodic riffs. Acoustic folksy guitars and flute open ‘King Of The English’ as well, before our front man crawls upon the barricades and shares his proud verdict with the listener. Mark the pragmatic spoken fragment with bass guitar, although the band mostly plays very powerful during these Celtic pagan songs. This exuberance is always sublimated by moments where they slacken down pace to ask maximum attention from the listener for the next plea. The floating My Dying Bride alike guitar sounds in ‘Dawning Of The Grey’ are very beautiful, while the following marshy outburst will leave no headbanger unmoved. This is stalwart, glorious metal, like we get our merciless share of during ‘All Eire Will Quake’ as well. “Attack, attackâ€, they shout in the overwhelming ‘The Sacking Of The Vedrafjord’, with tin whistle and guitars at the ready. But Mael Mordha has even more greatness to offer. The sneaky built up instrumental ‘A Dirge’ leads us to the superior title track. During eight minutes they take the time to build up tension with meandering solos, a semblance of immortality and finally going into crescendo towards a wonderful climax (full of rage). The earth is drenched with blood to save the fatherland. That might be the core sentence and feel of this battle hymn. Even few raucous grunts accentuate the rigorous timbre of the song, to occlude in a solemn way with a compelling speech. Not everything is instantly accessible or catchy, but we can trust in Mael Mordha that they always support us with a heavy bunch of doom-laden heaviness with an authentic Irish character. Once again that is illustrated on ‘Damned When Dead’.

Zo’n drie jaar is het geleden dat voorganger ’Manannán’ uitkwam, maar dat betekent niet dat de ruwe krijgers van het Ierse Mael Mordha op hun lauweren gerust hebben. De authentiek Ierse band kon zijn flamboyante show opvoeren in Europa en de Verenigde Staten op tal van festival podia. Er is ook nog gewerkt: ‘Damned When Dead’ – het vierde studioalbum – werd opgenomen als viertal na het vertrek van gitarist Anthony Lindsay, maar de bekwame productie van Chris Fielding (Winterfylleth, Primordial) in de Foel studio in Wales haalt het beste van de band naar boven. We kruipen op de barricades voor acht nieuwe songs vol bravoure, Gaelic doom metal is de naam!
Een mooi staaltje van etnische extravagantie knalt reeds uit de boxen bij het begin van ‘Laudabiliter’, want begeesterde gezangen zweven boven de stuwende riffs. Natuurlijk wordt het Mael Mordha geluid weer gedragen door de voordrachtzang van voorman Roibeard O Bogail, met epische geladenheid, een plechtig gesproken fragment en een speels fluitje (ah… die ‘tin whistle’) dat zoete klanken produceert tussen de melodieuze riffs. Akoestische folk gitaren en fluit openen ook ‘King Of The English’ vooraleer de frontman op de barricades kruipt en zijn trots verdict met de luisteraar deelt. Let op het pragmatisch gesproken stuk met basgitaar, al musiceert de band meestal erg krachtig tijdens deze Keltische pagan songs. Deze uitbundigheid wordt altijd gesublimeerd door momenten waar men de pas inhoudt en de luisteraar zo even betrekt bij een voornaam pleidooi. Zo zijn de zwevende My Dying Bride achtige gitaarklanken in ‘Dawning Of The Grey’ erg mooi, waarna de drassige uitval geen headbanger onverschillig zal laten. Dit is stoere, glorieuze metal, zoals we in ‘All Eire Will Quake’ weer genadeloos voor de kiezen krijgen. Aanvallen geblazen ook, tijdens het overrompelende ‘The Sacking Of The Vedrafjord’, met tin whistle en gitaar in de aanslag. Mael Mordha heeft nog meer fraai voor ons in petto. Het sluw opbouwende instrumentale ‘A Dirge’ leidt ons namelijk naar de superieure titelsong. Gedurende acht minuten neemt men de tijd om dit spannend op te bouwen met meanderende solo’s, een zweem van onsterfelijkheid en het heerlijk opwerken naar een (toornige) climax. De aarde is besmeurd met bloed om het vaderland te redden. Dat is zowat de kernzin van deze strijdhymne. Zelfs enige grunts accentueren het rigoureuze timbre van de song, om dan plechtig te besluiten met een beklijvende toespraak. Niet alles is even toegankelijk, maar dat we bij Mael Mordha steeds terecht kunnen voor een portie stevige zwartgalligheid met een authentiek Iers karakter wordt ook op ‘Damned When Dead’ volop geïllustreerd.
