CORONATUS: Recreatio Carminis

Promptly every two year one can look forward to new work of Coronatus, the Stuttgart based symphonic gothic metal band with two female singers, under guidance of drummer Mats Kurth. Now they even have three female vocalists, since they announce the return of original soprano Carmen R. Lorch. In 2009, after the release of ’Fabula Magna’, she left the band for a while to dedicate herself to her family. ‘Recreatio Carminis’ as new and fifth studio album happens to be a logical successor of ’Terra Incognita’.
We hear catchy, fetching gothic metal with a powerful rhythm section, now and then graced with extra guitar leads and violins and of course an opulence of idiosyncratic fairy-like female vocals: Ada Flechtner as soprano and Mareike Makosch as rock chick, sometimes storytelling with a touch of folk. On top of that, every song is enriched with symphonic arrangements, giving the entire album a kind of bombastic flavour. The band remains loyal to certain methods and techniques. Again this album was recorded at Studio E, while Markus Stock (The Vision Bleak, Empyrium) did the mix and mastering. Thus sound-wise everything is excellent. Lukasz Jaszak was once again responsible for the artwork. After the completely classical, symphonic intro ‘Ouvertüre’ the band kicks off with heavy rock in ‘Towards Horizon’. The female singers are even strengthened with impressive choirs and as extra we can enjoy a fervent guitar solo. Violins also regularly come in the picture for a solo moment; just listen to ‘In Meinem Reich’ and ‘The Monk’. Coronatus shifts from English to German lyrics in the songs and they reach their maximum velocity during the lively ‘The Monk’, the catchy ‘So Tanzt!’ (inviting you to dance) and the rocking ‘Winterrosen’. On the other hand, solemn soprano chants are nicely featured in the bit longer ‘Der Gesandte’. When you have a soft spot for catchy gothic rock with symphonic layers and sure-fire female vocals, you will have a proper satisfying album with ‘Recreatio Carminis’. On the limited edition digipak one can find two bonus tracks: songs from the previous album, but now sung by Carmen. The single ‘Fernes Land’ remains fine, but ‘Sie Stehen Am Weg’ remains a mediocre track.

Prompt elke twee jaar kunnen we uitkijken naar nieuw werk van Coronatus, de symfonische gothic metal band uit Stuttgart met twee zangeressen, onder leiding van drummer Mats Kurth. Men heeft nu zelfs drie zangeressen, want men kondigt ook de terugkeer van de oorspronkelijke sopraan Carmen R. Lorch aan die in 2009 na de release van ’Fabula Magna’ een poosje van het toneel verdween om zich aan haar gezin te wijden. ‘Recreatio Carminis’ als nieuwe en vijfde studioalbum is een logische opvolger van ’Terra Incognita’.
We horen vlotte gothic metal met een krachtige ritmesectie, hier en daar wat extra gitaar- en vioolwerk en natuurlijk de typische feeërieke vrouwenzang: Ada Flechtner als sopraan en Mareike Makosch als verhalende rockzangeres. Bovendien is elke song verrijkt met symfonische arrangementen, wat het geheel een bombastisch tintje geeft. De band houdt vast aan bepaalde vertrouwde technieken. Ook nu werd het album opgenomen in Studio E, terwijl Markus Stock (The Vision Bleak, Empyrium) eveneens instond voor de mix en mastering. Geluidstechnisch is alles dus pico bello. Voor het artwork tekende wederom Lukasz Jaszak. Na de volledig klassieke ‘Ouvertüre’ barst men los in stevige rock tijdens ‘Towards Horizon’. De zangeressen krijgen nog versterking van imposante koren en een vurige gitaarsolo krijgen we als toetje. Violen treden geregeld even op het voorplan, zo ook in ‘In Meinem Reich’ en ‘The Monk’. Coronatus wisselt de Engelse en de Duitse taal af in de songs en komt vooral op topsnelheid tijdens het jachtige ‘The Monk’, het tot dansen aanzettende ‘So Tanzt!’ en het rockende ‘Winterrosen’. De plechtige sopraanzang komt goed tot uiting in het ietwat langere ‘Der Gesandte’. Wanneer je houd van vlotte gothic rock met symfonisch laagje en prima vrouwelijke zang, dan is ‘Recreatio Carminis’ weer zondermeer een degelijk album. Op het gelimiteerde digipak vind je twee bonustracks, nummers uit het vorige album, maar nu gezongen door Carmen. De single ‘Fernes Land’ blijft prima, maar ‘Sie Stehen Am Weg’ blijven we een middelmatig nummer vinden.
