TWILIGHT OF THE GODS: Fire On The Mountain

We do not come up that easy with the predicate ‘super group’, but in the case of Twilight Of The Gods we cannot ignore that this constellation appears to be made up of international coryphaeus. Initially this cooperation came into being as cover band of Bathory songs. In this capacity they presented themselves to the audience during Paganfest 2010. They enjoyed the trek so much that they soon decided to write original songs together. These have found their way to the studio debut ‘Fire On The Mountain’ and they are a blueprint of stalwart old school heavy metal.
Thus… who are we dealing with? Of course you cannot neglect the expressive, passionate vocals of front man Alan Averill AKA Nemtheanga (Primordial). He carries those battle hymns, so to speak, and gives the band a signature sound. In addition he articulates in such a manner that some lyric fragments instantly haunt you. Guitarists Patrik Lindgren (Thyrfing) and Rune Eriksen (Aura Noir, ex-Ava Inferi and ex-Mayhem) are a guarantee for immortal riffing (sounding familiar from the very outset, but executed in such a refined way that you cannot remember where you have heard this before) and a wide range of fervent soloing. Bassist Frode Glesnes (Einherjer) and drummer Nick Barker (Lockup, ex-Cradle Of Filth, ex-Dimmu Borgir, ex-Testament) are the tight and steady rhythm section as solid foundation of these seven heroic tracks. All members have a soft spot for glorious pagan metal and heavy metal with guts from the eighties.
Consequently Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Manowar happen to be names we can mention to describe this self-written metal galore of Twilight Of The Gods. Maybe the album will not sound revolutionary after the first spin, but dig deeper, since all songs will become captivating statements in the end, irresistible to shout and roar along with your fist in the air. Anyway, that’s what happened to the undersigned, resulting in the following review. In between sturdy riffs in ‘Destiny Forged In Blood’ we hear slightly Primordial alike wandering bas runs. In between melodic leads they call up to fury: “Heathen metal call to armsâ€. The excitatory chants descend towards a minatory spoken fragment. Lindgren and Eriksen cut loose in fiery guitar solos. ‘Children Of Cain’ is dramatic, regaled with chunky riffs with punch and vocals that turn into high-pitched shrieks. The bass-like intro with war chants of ‘Fire On The Mountain’ recalls a Manowar arena feel. Well, it is all about a bloody battle in Vienna (1683) against Ottoman plundering, so that makes sense. After a climax and a spoken passage, the song continues with snoring rhythms that slightly reminds me of ‘Space Truckin’ of Deep Purple. Guitar-wise ‘Preacher Man’ happens to be a celebration of familiar sounds from the past, but lyrics are very captivating and, as usual with Alan, proclaimed in an exuberant manner. Now songs are getting longer and more epic. The menacing ‘Sword Of Damocles’ will surely turn into a live stunner with its statement: “We are the sons of the hammerâ€. ‘The End Of History’ leaps to the eye with its doom-like atmosphere and harmony vocals in the chorus. The lengthy repetitive instrumental part passes into a solemn spoken, fateful conclusion. Magnificent, and on top of that we are overwhelmed by vigorous solos. In the mid-paced, lingering ‘At Dawn We Ride’ the tragedy of warriors going to battle is within reach. “The wind shall carry my battle cryâ€, announces Alan and slowly they rode towards the horizon…

We nemen het predicaat ‘supergroep’ niet licht in de mond, maar bij Twilight Of The Gods kunnen we niet negeren dat deze constellatie uit een stel internationale coryfeeën bestaat. Aanvankelijk zag deze samenwerking het licht als coverband van Bathory songs. In die hoedanigheid presenteerden ze zich ook aan het publiek tijdens Paganfest 2010. Daar beleefden ze zoveel plezier aan dat later de behoefte aan eigen nummers schrijven de kop op stak. Deze zijn beland op het studiodebuut ‘Fire On The Mountain’ en zijn een staaltje van stoere old school heavy metal.
Met wie hebben we dan wel de eer? Natuurlijk kan je niet om de expressieve, gepassioneerde zang van voorman Alan Averill AKA Nemtheanga (Primordial) heen. Hij draagt als het ware de strijdhymnen en geeft de band een eigen sound. Bovendien articuleert hij op een manier waarop bepaalde tekstfragmenten je meteen pakken. Gitaristen Patrik Lindgren (Thyrfing) en Rune Eriksen (Aura Noir, ex-Ava Inferi en ex-Mayhem) staan garant voor wereldriffs (die meteen bekend in de oren klinken, maar zo geraffineerd uitgevoerd worden dat je niet meteen kunt thuisbrengen waar je dit al eerder gehoord hebt) en een waaier aan spetterende solo’s. Bassist Frode Glesnes (Einherjer) en drummer Nick Barker (Lockup, ex-Cradle Of Filth, ex-Dimmu Borgir, ex-Testament) vormen de strakke ritmesectie als basis van de zeven heroïsche songs. Allen hebben een zwak voor glorieuze pagan metal en heavy metal uit de jaren tachtig met ballen.
Judas Priest, Iron Maiden en Manowar zijn dan ook namen waar we ons aan kunnen optrekken om de zelfgeschreven metal van Twilight Of The Gods te beschrijven. Klinkt het album na een eerste beluistering niet echt ophefmakend, graaf dan dieper, want alle songs zullen uitgroeien tot beklijvende statements, waarbij je vanzelf gaat meebrullen met de vuist in de lucht. Althans, zo verging het ondergetekende, zodat we nu tot het volgende verslag komen. Tussen de gedecideerde riffs in ‘Destiny Forged In Blood’ horen we Primordialachtige zwervende basloopjes. Tussen de melodieuze leads in roept men op tot furie: “Heathen metal call to armsâ€. De geëxciteerde zang daalt af tot een dreigend gesproken fragment. Lindgren en Eriksen laten zich gaan in vurig soleerwerk. ‘Children Of Cain’ is dramatisch, voorzien van vette riffs met punch en zang die de hoogte ingaat. De intro met bas en gejuich van ‘Fire On The Mountain’ roept een Manowar arenagevoel op. Dit gaat dan ook over een bloedige veldslag in Wenen (1683) tegen de Ottomaanse plunderaars. Na een climax en een gesproken flard vervolgt dit met ronkende ritmes die me aan ‘Space Truckin’ van Deep Purple doen denken. Heel wat herkenning roept ‘Preacher Man’ op in het gitaarwerk, maar de tekst is erg beklijvend en zoals we gewoon zijn van Alan uitbundig geproclameerd. De songs worden nu langer en meer episch. Zo zal het dreigende ‘Sword Of Damocles’ met zijn boutade “We are the sons of the hammer’ ongetwijfeld een knaller worden live. ‘The End Of History’ valt op door een doomachtige sfeer en samenzang in het refrein. Het lange, repetitieve instrumentale stuk leidt tot een plechtig gesproken, fataal besluit. Prachtig, daar krijgen we nog wat vurige solo’s bovenop. In het slepende, vrij trage ‘At Dawn We Ride’ ligt de tragiek van de vertrekkende held binnen handbereik. “The wind shall carry my battle cry†verkondigt Alan gillend en langzaam reden zij de einder tegemoet…
