A couple of months ago we already got an appetizer with ‘Second Coming’, a new live album by the reformed Stryper. The original line-up that made a big fuzz in the eighties is back. Hair metal with a Christian flavour. They sold more than 8 million albums and were the darlings of MTV in the high days of hair/glam/melodic rock. This new album sounds as if time has stopped. The sound is identical to what they did before and that may be a good thing for real diehard fans, but their sharp treble loaded sound has become a little bit tiring for these ears. The inspiration and drive is still there and the band still play as if their lives are depending on it. The cover of ‘Jesus Is Just Alright’ does get the complete Stryper treatment and sounds as energetic as everything on this album. One can’t deny the fact that these guys really deserve respect for this effort, they sound like a hungry band of eighteen year old punks, but their maturity as musicians makes this a top notch ‘in your face’ production and a couple of really good songs do the rest. And yes, the guitars are great! But as said before, a little bit tiring for the ears with a lot of treble and the drums mixed very much up front.

Enkele maanden geleden kregen we al een voorproef van de herenigde originele bezetting van Stryper. In de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw waren ze een hype en de lievelingen van MTV. Hun hairmetal met een flinke scheut glam en melodie deed het goed op de muziekzender en hun christelijke toets maakte hen sowieso speciaal in een scène waar plat hedonisme troef was. Deze nieuwe plaat klinkt alsof de tijd heeft stil gestaan. Hun sound is nog steeds dezelfde: veel midden en hoog, wat het luisteren vermoeiend maakt. Het moet gezegd dat hun inspiratie en gedrevenheid onaangetast is en deze gasten spelen alsof hun leven ervan af hangt. Ze hebben de energie van een jonge punkband, maar hun muzikale maturiteit en een aantal goede nummers, tillen Stryper toch boven het brute geweld. Een cover van ‘Jesus Is Just Alright’ krijgt een totale ‘makeover’ en klinkt als een originele Stryper song. Een bijzondere vermelding verdient ook het gitaarwerk van Sweet en Fox. Blijft het euvel dat dit een vermoeiende luisterbeurt blijft omwille van de mix, maar dat zal wellicht de diehard fans net plezieren.
