LEAVES' EYES: Symphonies Of The Night

Leaves’ Eyes manages to give every album a strong and slightly different identity by, within the gothic symphonic metal style, following their own path in a self-willed yet accomplished way. After the folk tinged ’Meredead’ the band around vocalists (and much more) Liv Kristine and Alexander Krull goes for a heavier approach, while the symphonic arrangements are prominently present again as well. That is an evolution we also applauded on the most recent Atrocity album ’Okkult’. Indeed, Leaves’ Eyes is in addition to Kristine and her man Krull naturally completed with the full Atrocity line-up as musicians with ancient Thorsten Bauer (also bass) and the Dutch Sander Van Der Meer on (this time heavy) guitars and Felix Born behind the drums.
This fifth studio album of Leaves’ Eyes is a concept album, entitled ‘Symphonies Of The Night’. Eleven heroines from historical books and legends are each featured in a song. For instance, ‘Symphony Of The Night’ is inspired by a thriller of J. Sheridan Le Fanu, a book from 1871 about a lesbian vampire. We have said it before: every album is preceded by studies and reflections and Liv sings again in different languages, although this is initially not so emphasized this time. Naturally this album was created at the Mastersound Studio of Alexander Krull. We embark on this musical journey while the band is already doing a European tour.
‘Hell To The Heavens’ sounds very familiar. Strings with fairy-like vocals of Liv lead us to a heavier part when guitars nicely join in and Alex adds some juicy rolling growls. The sultry sung ‘Fading Earth’ is followed by the mid-paced and dark ‘Maid Of Lorraine’ which is ending with a prayer. ‘Galswintha’ showcases the most folk influences. Percussion, flutes and Uillean pipes bring us into the Highlands, but soon this song gets wilder. In nearly every song we have heavy passages where Alex does some raucous grunts. The semi title track is highfaluting and menacing, while ‘Saint Cecelia’ happens to be very serene with angelic vocals, choirs and calm instrumentation. One might call it religious, but that is no wonder with a title like that. We head for the East with ‘Hymn To The Lone Sands’, with plucking guitars and a wild continuation with a beautiful guitar solo. Strings are the intro of ‘Angel And The Ghost’. The storytelling vocals are echoed by Alex and a hectic spoken part leads towards the next guitar solo. The contrast between the solemn chants of Liv and the energy of whistling-buoy Alex is very strong during ‘Eleonore De Provence’, while they touch sensitive moods with ‘Nightshade’. In occluding track ‘Ophelia’ ponderous heavy guitars leap to the eye, lots of grunts, but of course the lovely voice of our front lady as well. In brief: no fan will be disappointed and this is again a top notch album within the genre.

Leaves’ Eyes weet elk album een sterke en lichtjes andere identiteit te geven door binnen het gotische symfonische metal genre stug maar talentvol een eigen pad te kiezen. Na het folk gerichte ’Meredead’ had de band rond zang- (en veel meer) talenten Liv Kristine en Alexander Krull zin in een hardere aanpak, waarbij ook de symfonische arrangementen terug prominent aanwezig zijn. Een evolutie die we op het meest recente Atrocity album ’Okkult’ ook al met plezier vaststelden. Want Leaves’ Eyes, dat is natuurlijk buiten Kristine en eega Krull de voltallige Atrocity band als muzikanten met oudgediende Thorsten Bauer (ook bas) en de Nederlander Sam Van Der Meer voor het – ditmaal spetterend – gitaarwerk en Felix Born achter de drums.
Dit vijfde studioalbum van Leaves’ Eyes’ is een conceptalbum met als titel ‘Symphonies Of The Night’. Elf heldinnen uit historische boeken of legenden worden bezongen in een lied. Zo gaat ‘Symphony Of The Night’ bijvoorbeeld over de thriller van J. Sheridan Le Fanu, een boek uit 1871 over een lesbische vampier. We schreven het al eerder: aan elk album gaan studies en reflecties vooraf en Liv zingt ook ditmaal weer in verschillende talen al is dat op het eerste gehoor niet zo duidelijk. Natuurlijk is dit album weer tot stand gekomen in de Mastersound studio van Alexander Krull. We ontschepen voor deze muzikale reis terwijl de band al op Europese tournee is.
‘Hell To The Heavens’ is heel herkenbaar. Strijkers met feeërieke zang van Liv leidt naar een harder stuk waar gitaren mooi invallen en Alex zijn smakelijke grunt laat rollen. Het zwoel gezongen ‘Fading Earth’ wordt gevolgd door het mediumtempo en donkere ‘Maid Of Lorraine’ dat besloten wordt met een gebed. ‘Galswintha’ vertoont het meeste folk invloeden. Percussie, fluitjes en doedelzak verplaatsen ons in de hooglanden, maar later wordt dit nummer wel wilder. In zo goed als elk nummer zijn er heavy passages waar Alex ruw uitvalt met grunts. Het semi-titelnummer is bombastisch en dreigend, terwijl ‘Saint Ceclia’ heel sereen is met engelenzang, koren en ingetogen instrumentatie. Je zou het religieus kunnen noemen, maar met zo’n titel is dat niet verwonderlijk. Naar het oosten trekken we voor ‘Hymn To The Lone Sands’, met tokkelende gitaren en een wild vervolg waarin een knappe gitaarsolo passeert. Strijkers vormen de intro van ‘Angel And The Ghost’. De verhalende zang krijgt een echo van Alex en een opgejaagd gesproken stuk leidt naar een volgende gitaarsolo. Het contrast tussen de plechtige zang van Liv en de energie van brulboei Alex is eveneens sterk tijdens ‘Eleonore De Provence’, terwijl de gevoelige snaar geraakt wordt in ‘Nightshade’. In sluitstuk ‘Ophelia’ vallen de zware gitaren op, veel grunts, maar natuurlijk ook de lieftallige stem van onze frontvrouw. Kortom: geen enkele fan zal teleurgesteld zijn en dit is weer een topalbum in het genre.
