Machiavel is probably the longest serving band in Belgian rock history. They started in the seventies as a progressive/symphonic rockband until they lost their keyboard player and became more pop en mainstream rock orientated and scored a huge hit with ‘Fly’. The nucleus of singer Mario Guccio, bass player Roland De Greef and drummer Marc Ysaye has been stable since the second album ‘Jester’ (1977) and when the band reformed in 1998 they were joined by keyboard player Hervé Borbé. Guitarist Thierry Plas left the band a couple of years ago and was replaced by the fabulous Christophe Pons. Pons has definitely found his place in the band now and with ‘Colours’ Machiavel delivers a well balanced record. Progfans may think it’s a bit too poppy, rockfans may think it’s a bit too soft, but when listened to with an open mind, one cannot deny that ‘Colours’ is really a piece of art. With Hervé Borbé they have a very competent arranger and every song is very cleverly written and recorded with a superb sound. The opening track carries all the trademarks of a good Machiavel song and is instantly recognisable as such! Some songs have been arranged with a place for L’ Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie and this gives the songs an extra dimension: real classical instruments instead of electronic keyboards! Along the years Mario Guccio has become a very sensitive singer and the functionality of the rhythm section is perfect. This is a record to listen to and with every spin, it becomes richer and more revealing. That’s what makes good records great!

In een ander België zou deze groep ook in Vlaanderen de erkenning krijgen die ze verdient. Machiavel moet wel de langst bestaande actieve band in België zijn, maar moet het de laatste jaren stellen met enkel een (substantiële) aanhang in Brussel en Wallonië. Wat ooit in de jaren zeventig begon als onze trots op gebied van progressieve rock, evolueerde in de richting van artrock en geraffineerde pop. Op ‘Colours’ zet de groep in elf nieuwe stukken nog eens de puntjes op de ‘i’. Gitarist Christophe Pons is ondertussen goed ingeburgerd en laat geregeld zijn kwaliteiten horen. Klavierspeler Hervé Borbé is prominenter aanwezig dan op vorige platen en de oude kern van de groep met zanger Mario Guccio, bassist Roland De Greef en drummer Marc Ysaye blijft zowel op creatief als op uitvoerend vlak top. Niet voor metalheads, maar wel een stukje puur vakmanschap dat bij elke beurt rijker klinkt. Op een viertal nummers wordt de groep ondersteund door L’Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie en die zullen er ook bij zijn als op 21 december 2013 de groep dit nieuwe werkstuk voorstelt in het Koninklijk Circus te Brussel.
