Two things instantly leap to the eye, invoking a more than average interest when meeting with the new name Vyre: this band was founded by ex-members of Eïs (formerly Geïst) and we read about comparisons with the music of Arcturus, Ulver, Manes… Thus an avant-garde flavour with roots in black metal. Well, we can simply say that the debut ‘The Initial Frontier pt. 1’ turned into a perfect example of where black metal can lead to in its best and most developed way, with focus on momentum, yet open for and enriched with different elements to end up with top notch class.
The initiative to form Vyre was taken in 2011 by KG Cypher (vocals) and guitarists Hedrykk and Zyan, all known from their past in (G)Eïs(t), but active in several other bands too. Initially they were joined by drummer Marlek from the same constellation, but he is replaced by Android now. T Max completes the band on bass, but there are also contributions on cello (Nostarion), while Enid member Martin Wiese added some orchestration. These additions increase the epic atmosphere, without speaking of bombastic classification overload.
The writing process for a debut album resulted in a bulky work that includes more music than one disc. Consequently it was split in two parts and that’s why we start with part one of ‘The Initial Frontier’ now. Another feature that makes it more enigmatic to listen to this album appears to be the spatial feel, since the lyrical content deals with the solitude and tristesse when travelling between the stars. The universe is fascinating, yet it can be fatal for you and except our planet, it is not human friendly.
This album offers aficionados of progressive black metal – after a short spacy intro – five mammoth compositions with musical skilfulness of considerable length (from eight to eleven minutes per track). The title song wallows in blackened heaviness, but is regaled with graceful leads and a rough yet intelligible voice one might consider a bit akin to the one of Sture Dingsøyr of Vreid: thus affinity with black metal but no screams that marrows you to the bone. There are slower parts included, but they managed to insert enough inciting brutality. In ‘Fragile Equilibrium’ we like to emphasis the tight as hell guitar accents that often return; they instantly grab you. We also have a fragment with piano and bluesy sensitive guitar licks, unexpected and refreshing! The slow transitions to different chords and moods in a fluent manner are brilliant! ‘Coil Of Pipes’ takes us on an eleven minutes long journey through intelligent structured momentum, with now and then a quiescent moment with acoustic guitars. Certain core sentences instantly draw the attention and cause any catchiness, like the phrase ‘When all seems digital’ in ‘Digital Dreams’. It haunts you and will never leave you! ‘Miasma’ includes such captivating passages as well with parts in German language, a spoken fragment and above all loads of musical glory. This is a standout debut on which the length of the songs happens to be an enrichment and necessity, instead of leading to monotony. In this respect we are already on the tiptoe of expectations for the second part (out in 2014), but well, first of all let us cherish this first part.

Twee dingen trekken meteen de aandacht om bovengemiddelde interesse op te wekken bij de nieuwe naam Vyre: deze band werd opgericht door ex-leden van Eïs (eerder Geïst) en er worden vergelijkingen gemaakt met de muziek van Arcturus, Ulver, Manes… Een snuifje avant-garde met de roots in black metal dus. Wel, we kunnen rustig stellen dat het debuut ‘The Initial Frontier pt. 1’ een perfect voorbeeld is van waar black metal toe kan leiden in zijn beste en meest ontwikkelde vorm, met oog voor stuwende kracht, maar anderzijds open voor andere invloeden om het geheel beter te maken.
Het initiatief om Vyre op te richten werd in 2011 genomen door KG Cypher (zang) en de gitaristen Hedrykk en Zyan, die allen een verleden in (G)Eïs(t) hebben, maar ook in tal van andere bands. Oorspronkelijk vervoegde ook drummer Marlek hen uit die constellatie, maar hij is nu vervangen door Android. T Max vervolledigt de band op bas, maar er zijn ook bijdragen op cello (Nostarion) terwijl Enid lid Martin Wiese orkestratie aanbracht. Deze toevoegingen maken de sfeer erg episch, zonder dat er sprake is van bombastische classificatie.
Het schrijfproces voor een debuut mondde uit in een lijvig werk dat meer muziek dan een enkele schijf kan bevatten. Daarom werd de boel in twee gesplitst en beginnen we nu met deel 1 van ‘The Initial Frontier’. Een bijkomend feit dat de luisterervaring meer enigmatisch maakt is het ruimtelijke gevoel, want dit album verhaalt o.a. over de eenzaamheid wanneer je tussen de sterren reist. Het universum is fascinerend, maar kan je ook fataal worden en is allerminst mensvriendelijk buiten onze planeet.
Dit album schaft de liefhebber van progressieve black metal na een kort spacy intro vijf lappen muzikale kunde van aanzienlijke lengte (van acht tot elf minuten per song). Het titelnummer wentelt zich in zwartgeblakerde heftigheid, maar met sierlijke leads en een ruwe verstaanbare stem die we kunnen vergelijken met Sture Dingsøyr van Vreid: verwant aan black metal maar geen door merg en been gaand gekrijs aldus. Er zijn tragere passages in verwerkt, maar er is gelet op voldoende ophitsende momenten. In ‘Fragile Equilibrium’ zijn het de strakke gitaaraccenten die meermaals terugkomen die meteen beklijven. Er is ook een passage met piano en bluesy gevoelig solowerk, onverwacht en verfrissend! De trage overgangen tussen verschillende akkoorden op een zwevende manier is prachtig! ‘Coil Of Pipes’ neemt ons elf minuten lang doorheen intelligent opgebouwde stuwkracht met nu en dan een verstild moment met akoestische gitaren. Bepaalde kernzinnen vallen meteen op in de songs en zorgen voor herkenning, zoals de frase ‘When all seems digital’ in ‘Digital Dreams’. Het bijt je vast in je geheugen en laat je niet meer los. Ook ‘Miasma’ kent zo’n beklijvende passages met flarden in de Duitse taal, gesproken stukken en vooral veel muzikale onderlegdheid. Dit is een schitterend debuut waarbij de lengte van de songs een verrijking en noodzaak is, in plaats van te leiden tot eentonigheid. We zijn dan ook nu al benieuwd naar het tweede deel, maar koesteren natuurlijk eerst dit.
