DEPRESSED MODE: Ghosts Of Devotion

In Finland nature reigns over human beings and not the other way around. Maybe that is why this country includes so many people involved in art, just like Ireland. One of them is Ossy Salonen who started to compose music with classical music and Burzum as main sources of inspiration. We do not meet with significant metal heroes who determinate Ossy’s youth right here. The first compositions he ever wrote were without guitar. He got lots of reactions on this. Eventually a good friend of him, Tomppa Turpeinen would join this musical adventure and ‘Ghosts Of Devotion’ brims with classical piano parts, accompanied by heavy riffs and low, desperate grunts.
Those early works of Depressed Mode did not stay unnoticed. Natalie Koskinen of Shape Of Despair contacted Ossy and adds a special dimension to the music verging to funeral doom from time to time. In ‘Fallen Angel’ she is featured mostly. In the long run Ossy found more and more musicians to support him. It resulted in a jetty experience with lots of depth when listening to ‘Ghosts Of Devotion’.
‘Words Of Silence’ is the first song that was written and one of the tracks with an instant impact. It unites the depth of heavy (funeral) doom with any catchiness. Title track ‘Ghosts Of Devotion’ captivates by its apocalyptic atmosphere, it might almost be called religious, and it is a composition full of grandeur with heavy percussion and strings. ‘The Sun Is Dead’ impresses with its eerie spoken lyrics, charming piano and a dramatic climax in higher gear. There is also a Burzum cover on the album. It is as dark as Joy Division and The Swans together and the only track with clean, mournful male vocals. ‘Cold’ sends shivers down my spine and this doom metal heaviness strides further towards the deepest abyss. Jori Haukio (ex-guitarist Mors Principium Est) has done a great job on the mix and mastering of this album and he deserves an extra compliment for the result. He plays cello on this album too. A marvellous debut that takes some time to get into, but it will be remembered as quite imposing.
Meanwhile Ossy has gathered a real band around him to bring this music in a live situation. With a new bass player (Henri Hakala) and Jori Haukio as permanent help I expect many good things in the near future of Depressed Mode. They are working on new songs for a second album.

In Finland heerst de natuur nog over de mens en niet omgekeerd. Misschien dat het land daardoor zoveel kunstzinnige geesten kent, net zoals Ierland. Eén van hen is Ossy Salonen die muziek begon te componeren met als belangrijke invloeden klassieke muziek en Burzum. We krijgen ditmaal geen opsomming van metal invloeden die de jeugd van Ossy bepaalden. Op de eerste composities die hij schreef is dan ook geen gitaar te bekennen. Daar kreeg hij veel reacties op. Uiteindelijk werd zijn goede vriend Tomppa Turpeinen wel bereid gevonden om het muzikale avontuur te vervoegen en staat ‘Ghosts Of Devotion’ vol klassieke pianostukken, vergezeld van zware riffs en lage, wanhopige grunts.
De vroege werken van Depressed Mode gingen niet ongemerkt voorbij. Natalie Koskinen van Shape Of Despair contacteerde Ossy en voegt een speciale dimensie toe aan de muziek die soms neigt naar funeral doom. In ‘Fallen Angel’ komt zij het meest aan bod. Gaandeweg vond Ossy meer en meer muzikanten bereid om hem bij te staan. Het is dan ook een gitzwarte ervaring met heel veel diepgang wat we op ‘Ghosts Of Devotion’ aantreffen.

Titelnummer ‘Ghosts Of Devotion’ beklijft door zijn apocalyptische sfeer, is bijna religieus te noemen en is een compositie vol grandeur met zware percussie en strijkers. ‘The Sun Is Dead’ imponeert door zijn gesproken akelige klanken, charmante piano en een dramatische climax in hogere versnelling. We vinden ook een Burzum cover op dit album. Het is zo donker als Joy Division en The Swans samen en het enige nummer met cleane, klaaglijke (mannelijke) zang. In ‘Cold’ lopen de rillingen over je rug en schrijdt deze doom verder naar de diepste afgrond. Jori Haukio (ex-gitarist Mors Principium Est) heeft heel wat werk gemaakt van de mix en de mastering en verdient een extra pluim voor het resultaat. Hij speelt ook cello op dit album. Een prachtig debuut dat even moet rijpen, maar toch als behoorlijk imposant de annalen ingaat.
Inmiddels heeft Ossy een echte band rond zich gevormd en kunnen zij de muziek live brengen. Met een nieuwe bassist (Henri Hakala) en Jori Haukio als permanente hulp verwacht ik nog veel goeds van Depressed Mode in de toekomst, want men is al volop bezig met nieuwe nummers voor een tweede album.
