MORTAL SIN: An Absence Of Faith

Thrash fanatics who eagerly collected LP’s in that genre during the eighties will probably remember the name Mortal Sin. In 1986 their debut album ‘Mayhemic Destruction’ harvested lots of success and the successor ‘Face Of Despair’ did pretty well too. Mortal Sin is one of the first Australian thrash bands ever and through the years they have played some gigs with eminent thrash icons like Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth and Testament. Quite impressive indeed.
However the history of Mortal Sin includes any hiatuses as well; periods of inactivity caused by bad luck, troubles in the line-up or just being tired of the whole rock ‘n’ roll circus. Since 2004 they are working on the third comeback. From the original members, only vocalist Mat Maurer and bass player Andy Eftichiou can be heard on ‘An Absence Of Faith’, so that we can rely on the familiar vocals of Mat and that’s a plus. But musically nothing changed at all either. Mortal Sin still plays old school thrash metal and why shouldn’t they? This is a record to headbang; it is as simple as that.
It is not so strange that Mortal Sin has been called the Australian Metallica in the old days, because the voice of Mat Maurer has the rough hoarseness of James Hetfield, though it could switch into some Overkill similarities in a live situation. But the band knows how to entertain and excite the roaring crowds. We can enjoy some straight forward chopping riffs in ‘My Nightmare’ or a simple yet effectual track as ‘Lost Within’, but on the other hand we are all ears for the inciting guitar solo in ‘Say Your Prayers’ or the magnificent instrumental intro of ‘Before The Bough Breaks’ (which has a very fetching chorus). For aficionados of some epic proportions, we have the long ‘Tears Of Redemption’. In brief, this is a very good thrash album.
As bonus there are two video recordings of Wacken Open Air 2006, a key moment in the history of the band, since it represented their comeback on European soil. Old classics like ‘Blood Death Hatred’ and ‘Mayhemic Destruction’ are filmed here. In March 2008 Mortal Sin does a European tour with Overkill and on the 15th of March they are in the Netherlands.

Bij thrash fanaten die in de jaren tachtig al driftig elpees in dat genre verzamelden, zal de naam Mortal Sin ongetwijfeld een belletje doen rinkelen. In 1986 oogstte het debuutalbum ‘Mayhemic Destruction’ veel succes en de opvolger ‘Face Of Despair’ deed het al even goed. Mortal Sin is dan ook één van de eerste Australische thrash bands en ze openden in de loop der jaren voor grootheden als Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth en Testament. Het is niet niks.
Het verhaal van Mortal Sin kent echter ook veel hiaten; periodes van inactiviteit die meestal het gevolg waren van tegenslag, gerommel in de bezetting of was het gewoon de metaalmoeheid? Sinds 2004 zijn we echter toe aan de derde comeback van deze Aussies. Van de oorspronkelijke leden zijn alleen zanger Mat Maurer en bassist Andy Eftichiou op ‘An Absence Of Faith’ te horen, zodat we de zang als herkenningspunt hebben en dat is leuk. Muzikaal is er trouwens ook helemaal niets veranderd. Mortal Sin speelt nog steeds old school thrash en dat is maar goed ook. Een plaat om simpelweg lekker te headbangen dus.
Het is niet zo vreemd dat Mortal Sin destijds de Australische Metallica genoemd werd want de stem van Mat Maurer heeft de rauwe heesheid van die van James Hetfield, al kan het live wel eens omslaan naar Overkill gelijkenissen. De band weet echter wel te boeien. We kunnen genieten van lekker doorhakwerk in ‘My Nightmare’ of een simpele track als ‘Lost Within’, maar merken ook de spetterende gitaarsolo op in ‘Say Your Prayers’ of het fantastische instrumentale intro van ‘Before The Bough Breaks (dat overigens een aanstekelijk refrein heeft). Voor de liefhebbers van enige epische proporties is er het lange ‘Tears Of Redemption’. Kortom, een erg goeie thrash plaat.
Als bonus zijn er twee video opnamen van Wacken Open Air 2006, een sleutelmoment in de historie van de band, want dit vertegenwoordigde hun comeback op Europese bodem. Daar worden de oude krakers ‘Blood Death Hatred’ en ‘Mayhemic Destruction’ gespeeld. In maart 2008 gaat Mortal Sin op Europese tournee met Overkill en doet op 15 maart ook Nederland aan.
