Time flies! It has been eighteen years since Kai Hansen left Helloween and founded his own band Gamma Ray. I saw them live this summer at Earthshaker Fest and it was an exalted musical happening. For their ninth studio album, the cheerful lads wrote a sequel for their stunning 1995 album ‘Land Of The Free’. We might say that ‘Majestic’ represents the darker side of Gamma Ray and ‘No World Order’ had an eighties approach. Well, about ‘Land Of The Free Part II’ we can simply say that it is a gem where the metal fire reigns.
‘Into The Storm’ is a fast metal track with proper vocals and lots of inciting guitar skills. Typically Gamma Ray. ‘From The Ashes’ tends to the darker side, with retrospective vocal lines and later on building up a loyal feel with choirs to sing along. ‘To Mother Earth’ is speed metal (I like this one), but the chorus is kind of mellifluent. The beginning of ‘Rain’ verges to AC/DC rock ‘n’ roll. From ‘Empress’ on however the album showcases any epic proportions and that’s a plus. Songs are getting longer, have more depth and include more breaks. Above mentioned ‘Empress’ for instance starts in a slightly progressive way and is sung in a powerful manner. Suddenly there are classical male choirs, giving the entire thing a very dark edge. After an acoustic fragment they glide into some renting, vigorous guitar skills. Great song!
The hectic ‘When The World’ has such a magnificent break as well. Galloping rhythms are haunted by firm, sturdy choirs and these really blow your minds. After a hard day’s work, lyrics of ‘Opportunity’ are appropriate to the max. Longing for freedom and time to be yourself; it is the central theme of the record, but it is a general mundane theme. Some parts in this freedom song are very Iron Maiden alike. ‘Real World’ is a catchy song in the vein of the Helloween classics ‘I Want Out’ and ‘Future World’ written by Hansen. Absolute stunner of ‘Land Of The Free Part Two’ is the eleven minutes long ‘Insurrection’. This epic track begins calm and thoughtful and builds layer by layer up towards a climax. After several minutes of sublime guitar work of Richter and Hansen, follows a majestic calm part which is very Manowar alike. That glorious, solemn dignity, you know. In the wild continuation they swallow the bait.
The high quality of this album will result in everybody making a grab at his agenda. At the end of November Gamma Ray will embark on a tour with Helloween, the so-called Hellish Rock tour 2007/2008. Gamma Ray will play seventy minutes long and a jam session with Helloween later on is planned. It may be obvious, no troubled rivalry between both bands anymore. Now I am getting truly inquisitive!

Wat vliegt de tijd! Het is al achttien jaar geleden dat Kai Hansen Helloween verliet en zijn eigen band Gamma Ray oprichtte. Ik zag ze deze zomer nog aan het werk op het Earthshaker Fest en het was een uitzinnig muzikaal gebeuren. Voor het negende studioalbum hebben de vrolijke lieden een vervolg geschreven op hun knaller uit 1995 ‘Land Of The Free’. We kunnen stellen dat ‘Majestic’ de donkere zijde van Gamma Ray vertegenwoordigde, terwijl ‘No World Order’ erg naar de jaren tachtig teruggreep. Welnu, over ‘Land Of The Free Part II’ kunnen we gewoon zeggen dat het een knaller is waar het metalen vuur hoog oplaait.
‘Into The Storm’ is een snelle metaltrack met goede zang en veel ophitsend gitaargeweld. Typisch Gamma Ray. ‘From The Ashes’ is al wat donkerder, met retrospectieve zanglijnen en later een loyaal gevoel door meezingkoren. ‘To Mother Earth’ is speed metal (en dat gaat hen goed af), maar het refrein vind ik wat melig. Het begin van ‘Rain’ heeft wat weg van AC/DC rock ‘n’ roll. Vanaf ‘Empress’ echter begint dit album epische proporties aan te nemen en dat is toch altijd mooi meegenomen. De nummers worden langer, hebben meer diepgang en kennen meer breaks. Bovengenoemd ‘Empress’ bijvoorbeeld vangt licht simfonisch aan en is krachtig gezongen. Plots zijn daar klassieke mannenkoren die het geheel een erg donker randje geven. Na een akoestisch fragment verglijdt men in een scheurend gitaarwerk. Knap!
Het jachtige ‘When The World’ heeft ook zo een fraaie omslag. De galopperende ritmes die achterna gezeten worden door robuuste koren zijn een lust voor het oor. Na een harde werkdag is de tekst van ‘Opportunity’ ons op het lijf geschreven. Het verlangen naar vrijheid en tijd om jezelf te zijn, het is het centrale thema van deze plaat, maar het is ook een mondiaal thema. Sommige stukken in dit vrijheidslied zijn erg Iron Maiden achtig. ‘Real World’ is een vlot nummer in de trant van de door Hansen geschreven Helloween klassiekers ‘I Want Out’ en ‘Future World’. Klapstuk van ‘Land Of The Free Part II’ is het elf minuten durende ‘Insurrection’. Deze epische track vangt kalm en bedachtzaam aan en bouwt laagje per laagje op naar een climax. Na een aantal minuten opgaan in het sublieme gitaarwerk van Richter en Hansen volgt er een prachtig kalm stuk dat héél erg Manowar is. Die glorieuze, plechtige gewichtigheid. In het wilde vervolg geeft men er nog een flinke lap op.
De kwaliteit van dit nieuwe album zal iedereen naar zijn agenda doen grijpen. Eind november vertrekt Gamma Ray namelijk op tournee met Helloween, de zogenaamde Hellish Rock tour 2007/2008. Gamma Ray zal zeventig minuten spelen en er staat een jamsessie met Helloween op het programma. Van ongezonde rivaliteit is dus al lang geen sprake meer. Nou word ik toch wel heel erg benieuwd!
